[libreoffice-users] Mendeley desktop plugin causing extended time lags in LibO

2015-04-01 Thread Sun Shine

Hi list

This follows up on an email written earlier this year regarding a
time-lag in LibO when using Mendeley Desktop plugin [
http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg42838.html ]. At the
time of writing, I thought this was a LibO issue, but it seems more like
a Mendeley Desktop (MD) issue:

I wrote to MD support to ask about progress made in response to a cohort
of other LibO users who have posted to the MD website reporting similar
time lags in using the MD insert citations plugin. Josh, a support
person at MD, responded that no work had been undertaken on this because
it was deemed to be a LO problem in how they process fieldcodes.

I responded that since LibO is open source and that Mendeley developed
the plugin for LibO this is a Mendeley issue ... but this has resulted
in a deafening silence from MD!

What field codes is Josh referring to and is there anything I as a lowly
end-user can do to fix this, at least locally? Is this something that
LibO developers are able to address with MD to facilitate uptake among
universities of LibO, many of which would also use Mendeley?

For specs, I'm running LibO 4.3.5.2 on Mint 17, using the latest
Mendeley Desktop and plugin versions.

Thanks for any suggestions

It is seemed the first cell is used as a label, not data. If we add one
more cell L16, set L16=Test, and select those 7 cells ( L16 ~ L22 ) to
sort, then we will get the result B-P-Q-R-Y-Z.

Hope it helps and best regards.

Michael

The above test DOES treat the first cell in the range as a column
LABEL. If you do the sort using the menu (Data Sort), the box that
opens up contains two tabs (Sort Criteria, Options). Again, the
default is to treat the top cell as a LABEL. If you do NOT HAVE any
column labels, you have to go to the OPTIONS tab (every time) and
UN-SELECT the Range Contains Column Labels box.

Technically, this does not appear to be a bug. (It appears to be
intentional design.) But I believe it is a poor design. That Range
Contains Column Labels checkbox SHOULD be on the SORT CRITERIA tab, so
that the user sees it every time he performs the sort operation.
Likewise, using one of the SORT icons should also open up that same
box. The only difference should be that the default sort order changes
depending on which icon is hit.

So I made a construction in Calc and after three months working with it
I can say that is was worth the effort and I am very happy with it. I am
in full control now, instead of pushing buttons on a black box, I can
import raw csv files from the bank and after a good talk with and help
from my accountant the output is very compatible with his demands. For
people not very familiar with Calc I would strongly advice not to do it
this way.

One of the reasons to do this is that my invoice system is based on
tables in Calc. In fact it started with Star Office and is now over 13
years old. It is not a nice polished system, back then I had a database
in mind so it contains a lot of sheets for relations, a sheet for
customers, customer - project, project - invoice, invoice - sold items, ...

Flexibility is a main argument. For example, over the years I began
exporting, inside and outside EU, to private persons and companies, all
having different VAT laws. It is extended to serve well and I am even
not aware of a system that is able to do this task better and is Freedom
software.

Concluding, I am in full control, it took a lot of work but that is
paying back, it is not polished, using it is hard to explain to
colleagues, you always have to be careful not to mess things up, it is
very easy to export data, search data and sort data. It takes discipline
to work with it.

Perhaps most important... Over the years I've learned one thing, smart
entrepreneurs are experts in bookkeeping. If not, work on it. Last
resort: find a bookkeeper for a long term relation.

I'm not interested in a
full-fledged bookkeeping system. I've been through three in the past two
years and finally my accountant told me I was never to touch a
bookkeeping system or even do my own bookkeeping because it's gonna cost
me more for him to untangle my mistakes that it will be for him to do it
for me (yes, I'm that bad at it).

There is so much on the net, everybody can learn bookkeeping and working
with your own data gives you the best impression of how your
organization is doing.

Hello Tom

Nice to hear from you, and thanks for the suggestion.

Can you clarify: did you mean post a bug report to the LibO developers

For the LibO folk, is there a protocol one follows - e.g. is it via an
email list or a website or ... ?

Thanks again.

Re: [libreoffice-users] invoicing systems using Calc (or something else)

2015-04-01 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
That makes a lot of sense. Actually turned me around a bit.

Please take my previous advice with a big pinch of salt or even ignore
completely. The important thing is to get something set-up that does work
for you.

Getting your own bookkeeper, perhaps for an hour or 2 a week or something,
might be better than getting the accountancy firm to do your bookkeeping
for you. It might be a lot cheaper and be better for more relaxed chats
about the whole thing.

They might need several more hours in the first few weeks so that they can
develop or configure a system for you. I guess that a lot of bookkeepers
might be really glad of a chance to set things up in a way that they
prefer, as we all have our own preferences on some things, rather than
trying to figure out someone else's system.

Tom :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] IT Assistant

2015-04-01 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
LibreOffice actively develops 2 branches alongside each other all the
time.

The Fresh branch is the default one and tends to be more developed in
terms of new functionality and better handling of documents created by the
newer versions of Microsoft Office. On the other hand sometimes some of
the new things do create unexpected problems.

The Still branch has focused on fixing problems and doesn't add new stuff
so it is sometimes better for several different types of environments. I
install Still on all my colleagues' and client's machines but try to use
Fresh on machines that i can reach quickly and easily to revert back to
Still if necessary.

It is even possible to install both versions on a single machine but i find
it easier to just uninstall and then reinstall the other. That way
whichever version is being used picks-up on the same settings = so i don't
have to reconfigure anything.

If you go to our download site you will find you can change the version to
download. It is a good plan to have both the latest versions, one from
each branch.

Good luck and many regards from
Tom :)

If you have already filed a bug-report with Mendeley then it'd be great to
include a clickable link to that in your report to the LibreOffice people.
If the Mendeley people are being nice then it'd be nice to copy the new
link from your bug-report here to them but they sound a bit unfriendly so i
would leave that for a couple of days - that gives the LibreOffice people
have more of a chance of getting up to speed.

  Hello Tom

Nice to hear from you, and thanks for the suggestion.

Can you clarify: did you mean post a bug report to the LibO developers or
to the Mendeley people (who seem to want to pass the buck onto LibO)?

For the LibO folk, is there a protocol one follows - e.g. is it via an
email list or a website or ... ?

 Thanks again.

   Hi :)
Maybe post a bug-report about it and maybe copypaste what you just wrote
 in that email into there?

Maybe say that you suspect that our Devs might be better at communicating
with their devs to get the issue resolved?

 Hi list

This follows up on an email written earlier this year regarding a
time-lag in LibO when using Mendeley Desktop plugin [
 http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/msg42838.html ]. At the
time of writing, I thought this was a LibO issue, but it seems more like a
 Mendeley Desktop (MD) issue:

I wrote to MD support to ask about progress made in response to a cohort
of other LibO users who have posted to the MD website reporting similar
time lags in using the MD insert citations plugin. Josh, a support person
at MD, responded that no work had been undertaken on this because it was
deemed to be a LO problem in how they process fieldcodes.

I responded that since LibO is open source and that Mendeley developed
the plugin for LibO this is a Mendeley issue ... but this has resulted in a
 deafening silence from MD!

What field codes is Josh referring to and is there anything I as a lowly
end-user can do to fix this, at least locally? Is this something that LibO
developers are able to address with MD to facilitate uptake among
universities of LibO, many of which would also use Mendeley?

For specs, I'm running LibO 4.3.5.2 on Mint 17, using the latest Mendeley
 Desktop and plugin versions.

 Thanks for any suggestions

[libreoffice-users] default writer template please?

2015-04-01 Thread Dave Stevens
I'm using LO 4.2.7.2 and have accidentally got a default document
display that's two pages side-by-side. If I open a file of a single
page I get the left page showing as blank then have to scroll right to
get to the page of text. Can anyone tell me either what I did wrong or
how to reset the page (the default template I suppose?) to the way it
displays out of the box?

It may be different on your system, but all the LOs I am familiar with
(4.3.6.2 here at the moment; /Curtains//7)/ show, on the bottom bar,
just to the left of the magnification slider, 3 mini icon-ettes in the
form of page outlines.

Click the left-most, singular one, and you should regain nirvana.

I don't think that this option qualifies as a template, but in any
case you don't have to go plowing through the template department to
restore singularity.

Feels like you are getting somewhere with this! The next bit might
have a
looong lead-time or lag but it'd be nice to start on that next step.
Does

anyone have time to post such a report?

Done. https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90393
