Here's one way:

In B1 (or wherever), enter:
=OFFSET(A1;MOD(ROW();2)*2-1;0)
and fill it down the column.

Note that this works if your list starts in an odd-numbered row (as
it does in your picture - in row 1), so that you are exchanging the
contents of an odd-numbered row with those of the even-numbered row
following it. If your list started in an even-numbered row, so that
you were instead exchanging each odd-numbered row with the
even-numbered row preceding it, you would need to use the similar formula:

=OFFSET(A1;1-MOD(ROW();2)*2;0)
instead. Alternatively, you could use the original formula but
displaced by one row from the data.

I trust this helps.

[libreoffice-users] i of the most disturbing things about 5.0 libreoffice

2016-12-08 Thread fudmer rieley

Its messed up.. it does not function smoothly and if
something is posed one sheet and worked on it
for a couple of days and you want to copy part or
all of the stuff on sheet 1 to sheet 2 you discover
that it its not possible to copy the contents of one
sheet to another sheet in the same open Libre office
session the new copy in sheet 2 is a reference back
to sheet 1.. each cell in sheet 2 has appended to the
cell numbers a reference back to the copied from
sheet 1. ( instead of =(2+4) nows has (sheet1.a2)
+ sheet 1.a4 so how do you make the
data on each sheet (the copied from and the copied two
independent of each other?

In earlier versions when you copied data and
computations from sheet 1 to sheet 2 the data and
computations operated
independently of each the copied from sheet. In 5.0
each copy references the data and calculations to the
copied from sheet and when you make entries in sheet 2
its very very slow and but if you really want a surprise
delete the data from the copied from sheet and the data
in the copied to sheet disappears as well. What a mess..

Libre Calc keeps things in sheets..

so on sheet one you do a bunch of calculations
and decide to copy that part of your work to the next sheet sheet 2
then you look at the stuff in the cells on sheet two and they are
referenced back to the sheet 1. making working on sheet 2
slow, difficult and rendering calc nearly inoperative and virtually useless..

LO 3.5.7.2 does not do that.. and it should not be done that way
the sheets should be able to be copied and made independent of
each other. Is there some way to do that?

I have many years experience with libre office and I am beginning
to see it fall apart right in front of my eyeballs. Very disappointing

What a shame.

I like 3.5.7.2 but this 5 in 64 bits is for the birds.. unless someone can fix
it
I will go back to the earlier versions.

I recommend 5 be redesigned to fit the earlier very successful versions of
Calc..

Libre office has been the world´s open source flagship.. until now.

[libreoffice-users] Slow response time with Calc

2016-12-08 Thread Virgil Arrington
When using Calc, I like to navigate across the cells using the arrow
keys on the keyboard. I'm finding when I do this on my Linux system, the
longer I'm in the spreadsheet, the slower my navigation becomes. After a
while, there's a large delay when I press one of the arrow keys.
Eventually, the spreadsheet becomes all but unusable. My spreadsheets
are not large; as spreadsheets go, they are quite simple. And, the
behavior doesn't immediately happen. When I first load a spreadsheet
file, the navigation is immediate. It slows down as I use the file, even
if all I'm doing is navigating with arrow keys.

I dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu Mate 14.04LTS. On the Windows 10 side
of things, I'm using LO 5.2.x and on the Linux side, I'm using LO 5.1.6.2.

This behavior only happens on the Linux side of things.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Virgil

[libreoffice-users] Spelling Errors Marked in Print Preview

2016-12-08 Thread CVAlkan
Hi:

I'm using a recent version (Version: 5.2.3.2 Build ID:
1:5.2.3~rc2-0ubuntu1~xenial1) of Writer, and because of its formatting, I
needed to spend more time than usual with the Print Preview layout.

The red squiggles show up under all of the spelling "errors" (they're really
just words in foreign languages) in print preview mode. I don't recall
seeing this before, and I hope it doesn't mean the red squiggles are going
to show up on printouts as well, but ...

Is this something new? Is it intentional? And if so, what was the rationale?
Or is there some setting I can't locate (I still want errors marked in the
editor window, so I don't want to turn off spell checking)?

Thanks in advance for any assistance ...

Thanks for this link - it looks promising. But I do see some tech speak
that I'm not familiar with like ACPI and APIC. A quick look shows that
my Windows installation has AGP440.sys and intelppm.sys so that's
another couple of potential problems.

But I think I'll give it a try over the end of year holiday period after
I've cleared up some outstanding job items.

My primary reason for booting into Windows from time to time (maybe a
couple of times a month) is to use Sibelius music notation software. But
I'm gradually getting used to Musescore in linux so maybe the dependence
on Sibelius will reduce. I wouldn't like to have to reinstall Sibelius
in a virtual machine so it would be ideal if I could use the existing
installation which is in the same box but on another disk.

I regret, somewhat, upgrading 7 to 10. W7 used to boot-up rapidly like
linux but 10 takes from 3 to 5 minutes to be usable -probably because it
was an upgrade and not a clean install. What I find the saddest about
Windows, though, is the way MS updates so often want to install
themselves just when I want to shut down and then so often require a
reboot or even two reboots before shut down. If I am not there to watch
the install and catch the reboot manually, my desktop defaults to linux
when Windows triggers its reboot.

So the next time I want to boot into windows, I find that a previous
update has not yet completed and I'm forced to wait while it does.
Linux updates always go on seamlessly in the background and only
occasionally require a reboot - never in the middle of an installation.

You mean something like this:

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Migrate_Windows

?

Trying to just use an existing partition/install is possible with VB,
but you will encounter issues occasionally. The above is a much cleaner
way to go.

Also, if you have problems re-activating, it is usually very painless
and automated - you call a toll free number, walk through the prompts,
and get a new code to activate. I've done this many times and never not
gotten reactivated, but everyone has to decide on the moral question
regarding the licensing.

Re: [libreoffice-users] MS Anniversary upgrade warning - not LO issue

2016-12-08 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I believe that VirtualBox does also allow you to use an existing Operating
System that is already installed on a hard-drive too.

It's something i still haven't looked into but i have confidence in you
figuring it out. I still think it might help to test-drive a couple of
virtual machines on your system just to get an idea of what's going on.

There is a lot of fuss that makes virtual machines sound almost
mystical and complicated but in truth it's really just like any other
program. When you run it or switch it on then it uses resources such as
cpu-cycles and ram. When you switch it off or stop running it (or whatever
you want to call it) then hose resources are "freed up" for you main
machine again.

Unlike most programs you can set how much ram the virtual-machine uses and
the program itself uses a little bit for itself. So on my machine i can
run 1 virtual machine and give it just over 1 Gb Ram leaving my main
machine with just under 1Gb of Ram - or i can run 2 virtual machines and
give them each 512Mb of Ram, or other such combination. I can't run 2
virtual machines that each have 1 Gb Ram at the same time as each other! I
could have lots of virtual machines, even hundreds of them, that each use
1Gb of Ram as long as i don't run (or switch on) more than 1 at a time.

People like to make virtualisation sound a LOT more complicated than it
really is because it makes them seem smarter or because they don't
understand it well enough it make it sound as simple as it really is.

The tricky bit i trying to figure out how to use the program and VirtualBox
tends to keep things fairly simple imo.

Regards from
Tom :)

2016-12-08 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
VirtualBox is owned by Oracle and subject to their whims. At the moment it
is still free and supports open standards but all that could easily
change. Such changes would make it more consistent with other Oracle
projects although such change is unlikely in the case of
VirtualBox.
