[libreoffice-users] Start Center

2017-02-17 Thread Michael Reich
Is there a way to shut off the Start Center? I know it’s a new “feature” but I
really don’t like it and would prefer to simply click file-open to access files.

Using LO 5.1.5.2 on Mac Sierra

I didn't catch all of the recent posts about trouble downloading the LO
installer (and the thread apparently got highjacked to another topic),
but I posted something similar a month or so ago. I had repeatedly
tried downloading the Windows installer and constantly got corrupted
installer files. I am on high speed broadband and never had issues
downloading other installers, including the OSX LO installer. I had
also tried downloading the windows installer at a local charity at which
I volunteer, which has very slow internet. That was spectacularly
unsuccessful also.

I finally was able to download at home using a torrent file. It seems
to me that there has to be something funky about the LO windows
installers that make downloading so difficult. I imagine casual users
of LO aren't going to try to download the darn file repeatedly in order
to get a good download.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LO Installer Download Problems

2013-10-05 Thread Michael Reich
Tom, thanks for your responses. When I originally posted about the
difficulty I was having downloading the installer, the user list gave me
the impression that there couldn't be anything wrong with the downloader
and I felt they pretty much blew off my inquiry. If I'd been directed
to make a bug report at that time, I would have done it. It's been
several weeks now and I'm not sure I recall the details at this point to
file a bug report. I will take a look at the bug report link you
provided and see what information is needed.

Thanks again for your interest.

[libreoffice-users] Writer Alpha Index Issue

2013-01-06 Thread Michael Reich
I'm finding phantom alphabetical index entries in some Writer
documents that I can't figure out how to get rid of. After creating a
new alpha index in a document, I'll find a word included in the index
that doesn't exist in the document. For example, I might see the word
elephant in the index, but if I search the document for elephant,
the word does not appear in the document. I've gone so far as to open
the document as a zip file and look in the content.xml file. There I
find entries with elephant. I don't know where they came form or how
to get rid of them. Any ideas?

BTW, my computer is a Macbook running Lion.

[libreoffice-users] Can Calc read/import data from Google Docs?

2012-09-27 Thread Michael Reich
I'm trying to figure out if I can have a Calc (OpenOffice or
LibreOffice) spreadsheet import data from a Google Docs spreadsheet.
The online assistance via google search is very confusing and seems
mostly oriented toward importing data to Google Docs. What I want is a
local sheet that can pull several cells of info (like names and
addresses) from a Google Docs spreadsheet, but I can't figure out what
function and syntax, if any, can do this in OO or LO. Is this possible
to do? If so, I apparently need the idiot's instructions.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Can Calc read/import data from Google Docs?

2012-09-27 Thread Michael Reich
Thanks, Tom, but the need is for dynamic. I know I can download the
Google Docs file, but that won't help. I had wanted to do everything
on Google Docs originally, but the function GD offers for reading
(importing) data from one sheet to another sheet has a limit of 50 uses
in the spreadsheet.

What I'm trying to do is this: we have a spreadsheet on GD that
maintains membership information (names, addresses, phone, etc) and
which is accessed by 2 people. I have started working on another
spreadsheet that will maintain dues information (amount assessed,
payments made, etc.) The second sheet would be accessed only by a third
person. So GD provides a function that would enable the second sheet to
import data on members from the first sheet, but has the 50 instance
limit. We could maybe work around that, but the bigger problem is that
GD doesn't have any normal mail merge function. It does allow
JavaScripts that could perhaps serve the purpose of a mail merge
operation, but JavaScript is beyond my abilities. So, I figured I could
build what I need for the second sheet using LO or OO and use their mail
merge function to generate invoices/bills. That brings me to the need
to have Calc read the membership data from GD.

This project has become way more complicated than I anticipated. I
started out looking for a free membership mgt. package, but we don't
have a server that could host what's available. The solutions that
provide hosting all cost at least $50/month which is far too expensive
for us. That brought me to GD

Hi :)
Ok, this is probably not what you are looking for but just to clear
the idea out of the way ... Can you just open the google-docs
spreadsheet and save it onto your computer? Then just double-clicking
on it should open it in Calc.

Google-docs uses the same native format as LO but both can save as
.xls or .xlsX (MS formats) and Google-docs might do that by default.
If Google-docs does that instead of saving in native .odS then you can
probably choose OpenDocument Format from Google-doc's Save As ...
menu. Double-clicking on the .ods almost definitely opens the file in
Calc.

Alternatively if it has saved as .xls or .xlsX then right-click the
file and choose Open With and then try to find Calc or LibreOffice
in that menu. This approach is slightly different in different OSes
but is roughly the same in all except Apples.

A similar alternative is to open Calc (or just LibreOffice) and then
dragdrop the file onto it. This approach will definitely work
whatever format it's in unless something really weird is going on in
which case tells us and we might be able to figure it out.

However i have a feeling that you don't want to download the file at
all and just want LO to dynamically read the Google-docs spreadsheet
while other people are editing the google-docs spreadsheet. If so
then i think there is a far better answer but it involves using Base
at your end and having a proper database on a server somewhere.

So, the question is do you want to do this with static data (as in my
first 4 paragraphs), or dynamically changing data?

Tom :)

A1=a

A3=c
A4=d

What I'm looking for is a formula that would tell me, in the above data,
that row 4 is the last one with data.

[libreoffice-users] Digest Format

2011-09-13 Thread Michael Reich
The format of the LibreOffice digest mail list is driving me crazy. It
doesn't seem to be threaded (grouping like messages together) at all and

Re: [libreoffice-users] Digest Format

2011-09-13 Thread Michael Reich
I subscribe to digest versions on lists which generate a fairly large
number of messages. It just cuts down on the total volume of messages
coming ot my inbox. A lot of the individual messages are not of
interest to me, and when the digest is 'threaded,' it makes it a lot
faster to skip to the topics I am interested in. As it is, messages on
a variety of topics get interspersed with each other making it very
tedious to wade through.

I don't think it's all controlled by the mail client; some of it must be
controlled by the mail list. I suspect part of the problem is the way
messages get posted. I've seen on other lists that if people reply to
a message, but change the substance, the messages get threaded wrong.
I know the OOO list is much more readable (for me). That could change
as it migrates to an Apache list.

Email list usually are not thread based, unless your client combines
emails with the same subject into thread-like groupings. I think
Nabble does some threading though, but I do not use Nabble often.

Yes, I have seen many lists/forums that are threaded, some good and
 some bad.

You are talking about digest lists. What are your reasons for
using the digest list? I personally do not use one, so I do not know
 what the issues you have.

I only have the one printer in Snow Leopard, but I think you problem
 lies
with System X rather than LibreO.
Way back I changed printers and I had to remove the old printer
 before the
new printer became the real Default.
That was in the days of Panther though.

 Tink.

I don't have a default printer set. I have OSX set to default to last
printer used. And this works as intended with both NeoOffice and
OpenOffice, so it would not seem to be an OSX issue. The printers are
an HP and Brother, no Epson.

Try System Preferences Print Fax, then remove any printers not in
 use.
Also, if you go into LO Preferences General and see if under Print
 Dialog,
Use Libre Office Dialogs is checked.
This gives you the option of using the LO Print menus, or Unchecked,
 the
 System X Print menus.

 I hope this helps.

 Tink.

Thanks Tink, but I don't want to eliminate any printers. From time to
time, I will select one or the other. As for the LO setting, I didn't
have LO Print menus selected, so I'm still stumped as to why LO won't
obey the OSX setting. It's very weird.

[libreoffice-users] Printing With OSX 10.6.7

2011-06-14 Thread Michael Reich
I have my MacBook set up with Default Printer set to be Last Printer
Used but LibreOffice (3.3.0) appears to be ignoring this setting.
When I print a document, LO seems to always default to a particular
printer and I'm wondering why this is. I don't see any settings in LO
itself to govern this and I'd like it to comply with my OSX settings.
Is this a bug? NeoOffice and OOO seem to obey the OSX settings, so I'm
thinking it's something in LO. Any ideas?
