[libreoffice-users] Recovery and Updates
Hi everyone, I've switched to digest mode and, so far, it is just what I need. I started a thread earlier about an anomaly in Libreoffice 3.5.1. I have not seen any response to it neither have I spotted the initial mail in any digest I have received so far. I'll repeat again: 1. Libreoffice is trying to recover files that do not exist. This happens at every start-up. The files in question are not corrupt. They were deleted and are no longer needed. I'd like to stop this behaviour. Any clues? I suspect Libreoffice maintains a list/record of recently failed loading attempts and continues to try entries on that list at each start-up ... if this is true, where does LibO maintain such? 2. I have just downloaded 3.5.2. I did notice something strange on a page linked from the download page (release notes under 'Handy Resources'). The release info has the following statement: This is the third release from the 3.5 branch of Libreoffice. It contains many exciting new features, and is the recommended version for private users and small enterprises. This is not informative! What changed between 3.5.1 and 3.5.2? The idea of release notes is to inform users of changes ... or perhaps that is reserved for main releases in the order 3.3, 3.4, 3.5 ...etc. If so, there should be a change-log or report somewhere. We cant keep downloading things without knowing what to expect. Re: [libreoffice-users] UNSUBSCRIBE
That's sad One experience decides it all? Not a fair basis for conclusions my friend. Mailing lists are like this. U probably needed to signup for a digest instead of regular deliveries. U get only few mails and you'll still be hearing from libreoffice users. You may also need to join forums and IRC chat channels if you're desperate but leaving a mailing list with that tone for reason of email traffic isn't fair. There! 3.5 is the way forward. I'm running it and I'm enjoying the experience :) I just wish there's a better icon theme or is there a way to throw the UI open to system's icon theme. I use faenza on GTK3 (fedora 16, Gnome3)? Hmm, the callout leaders for comments didn't get reviewed. Sometimes comments on a phrase overlap. It should be better to use highlights rather than arrowheads for the 'comment' callout(balloon). I use this feature a lot :( I'm happy to 'miss' the conspicuous margin borders ... Just neat. Java 1.7 support? Thought the idea was to liberate LibreOffice of the Java dependency in order to improve performance. Great, my custom-developed extension works as expected. [libreoffice-users] LibreOffice to the Rescue -- Change Character Encoding
This is interesting. I got an attachment from a friend who complained that her .docx file is no longer legible when opened with the native Word-processing Application (MS-Word). It opens al-right but its just gibberish. I assumed this is the work of a virus but I wanted to see it anyway (I run LibreOffice on Linux OS ... Security Maximus :) ). Its as she said but the characters look somewhat preserved in their new character mapping and the images are still there. So I'm suspecting the end result is a document with a different character encoding (e.g. UTF-8, but what I have here is definitely not UTF-8). She probably didn't realise her machine is using a character encoding that is not in general usage. So the Question is: How do I change a .docx file from one Character Encoding to Another? Is this possible with LibreOffice? I unistalled OOO 3.3, Java 22 that OOO had placed on its own, and Java 29 I had downloaded and installed separately. Cleanted everything out in directories left behind, restarted a few times, regeditd and cleaned all residuals, Ran chkdsk and let it clean any rwsiduals indices, etc. Defragmented several times. With no Java in XP SP3 IE8 fully updated machine with no Java in it now )to hopefully let LO 3.4.4 work without java dependecies now or later when new Java versions are installed and old version ones removed times), fresh clean installed LO 3.4.4. It went smoothly with my added 3 languages. Restarted several times doing some new writer document making, editing, copy-pasting, spell cheks, etc. First time it did not do spell check but displayed all correct. I oked. Then copy pasted additional rtped lines (from another WordPerfect 10 yes old version just for such situations here!) and did spell check. Now it worked ok! Interesting. Closed it restarted. Did the same additional lines copy pasting from a text document and spell check worked. Then I when all desktop windows were closed, I saw there was a folder LibreOffice 3.4 (4eb10e5c) Installation Files! Inside there was a cab file of 180MB+ and a Installer of name LibreOffice 3.4.msi of 4200 KB size, and a Setup.exe of 457 KB size, two more folders named readmes and redest, a setup.ini file of 3 KB size, and numerous languages after-suffixed trans_af.,st etc etc files. Ubsude the Readmes folder, there were similar numerous languages suffied txt files. The redst folder has two vcredest_x64.exe and vcredest_x86.exe files. I read the US ENgilish text file. Why and how these important files have been placed in the desktop location!?!?!? Was this folder misplaced? Do I have to move them manually to some other location in Explorer Directory somewhere, and If I did so, will it be working okay and properly recognized by the system ane LibreOffice? I've attached a typical screenshot to demonstrate the effect. It always helps if you: 1) tell others what version of LO you are having issues with (and also if it is from LO or some other source; linux distribution repository or PPA, etc), 2) what OS type and version (there are about thousands of versions of linux). My /guess/ is that you are running some form of Ubuntu, if correct please tell us which version you are running. Cannot comment on this poster, but, I have seen a very similar issue on both OOo and LO. I see this on Linux, not on Windows. I had the problem with Fedora 15 and also Fedora 16. Both are 64-bit versions. I use the KMod drivers for NVidia installed from the repositories. I see the issues with other applications as well, but the primary offenders are OOo and QT. Using Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 base and derivatives (Pinguy and Mint), both 64 bit, I have not seen this behavior. AFAIK the drivers were/are ATI Radeon from the repository. The actual drivers were auto-installed on installation and left unchanged. The desktops include both Gnome 2.? and Gnome 3.2. It appears that the problem is limited to the NVidia drivers. -- Andrew Pitonyak My Macro Document: http://www.pitonyak.org/AndrewMacro.odt Info: http://www.pitonyak.org/oo.php -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-users] Something is Missing in Calc
There is this cool cell background shading in Microsoft Excel that I can't find in LibreOffice Calc. That feature is an *ink-saver!* Calc's cell backgrounds are just colours and that's it. There are no hatches and if one wanted to indicate a blanked cell (by conditional formatting) he/she has to make due with colours rather than line-stroke hatches. A greyed cell uses more ink. I can mimick this feature with cross-out borders ... but that's borders and that's crude and nothing like hatches. Does anyone understand what I'm trying to describe here? Is this a known issue? Can someone point me to a solution ... if one exists? She wants it visible on screen with page numbers showing for both sheets -- one on left and the other on right side of the ONE mother page. She claims its possible in M$-Word and I believe her. Such setting is part of the printing dialog. So must not use the button for printing, but use menu File - Print. In the printing dialog is a tab 'Page Layout' where you can arrange the pages on the paper sheet. She might need to set the paper orientation to landscape in the printer properties in additon. In older versions of OpenOffice.org is was possible too. You had to switch to 'page preview'. There use the icon 'printer options' (that with hand and finger) to arrange the pages on the paper sheet, and then print using the print icon from that toolbar, no other printing way. Outside of LibreOffice the best way I found is to export to PDF and use the settings in the print dialog of the Acrobat Reader. [libreoffice-users] Which Conflicts?
I made a mistake yesterday and installed 32bit packages (RPM) downloaded from Libreoffice website onto a 64bit machine. I thought that wouldn't matter much but I was wrong. The icons wouldn't surface on the overview mode (Gnome-3). So I removed the packages via yum and got the 64bit packages. Problem is, they wouldn't install because yum reports series of conflicts on files installed by the previous packages. They have been removed! Which conflict again? All attempts to install the 64bit version now fail with this error. Someone has either forgotten to add code that instructs the rpm database of removal of locally installed packages OR ... My machine is b0rked somewhere else. So I reverted to 3.3.3 on my network and all went fine (is it because it sees that as a repo?). [libreoffice-users] LibO Extensions Adventure Continues
Sometime ago, I wrote to this list when I was developing an Extension for automating some tasks for fellow lecturers using spreadsheets to compute School Results. I was advocating migration from MS-Office to LibO for my colleagues because they knew little about spreadsheets and were using mostly pirated software. The adventure, so far, has been intriguing and fraught with challenges. The solution was not new. I was porting something I did in 2006 from VBA to Python for LibO -- an opportunity to test my skills in python for real. The new one is better implemented. On Thursday,September 8, 2011, I formally presented the update to the Department of Architecture in Enugu State University, Nigeria. It was totally welcomed. That means LibO is staying as far as the department is concerned. I have Hanya to thank for this progress. Please see: http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45t=43492 I aim to push LibO further than that. I'm being asked to document the Extension. To do that, I need to replace the generic icons I used in my demo/beta toolbar with something unique. The adventure is now on *phase two*. Questions: Why is LibO requiring magenta (0xFF00FF) to interpret transparency for toolbar icons? The wiki states that it (imageidentifier) is deprecated yet all attempts to use the 'images' configuration branch fail. With 'images' branch, transparencies in PNG are supported. Why can't I get this to work? Anybody interested in seeing a sample of my addon.xcu file??? Is there a way to ensure macro privacy/invisibility even for extensions installed by users (not administrators)?. This is one area VBA still beats LibO. In Excel the macros a wrapped up in the .XLS file and can be password protected (However, tools exist to extract the password ... hehehe). In libO, one only needs to know the installation paths to see everything. I am still activating a macro listener manually after loading the target document. Attempts to do this via events throw errors. The event is passing an argument I cannot decode yet. Yeah, I know ... someone needs to read the developers guide again. Any ideas are welcome though. Why does the toolbar icons show in Linux and disappear in LibO 3.4 (Windows). Is there something different in 3.4 specs? -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

I've been thinking a lot about this lately as many of my clients are coming to LibreOffice from Microsoft Office and I deal with both packages quite a bit. Many times, one of the first things I do once LibreOffice is set up is to show clients how to save in Microsoft format as opposed to .odf. It's actually one of the first questions they ask. Lately, I've been wondering about the wisdom of an open source package actively supporting a secret format like the Office ones. Would it not be preferable to support *only* saving in the open document format and then providing a plugin for Microsoft Office users who needed it? IMHO, allowing users to save in secret formats just continues the problem. They're still using proprietary software, just packaged a different way. Thoughts? [libreoffice-users] Adopting LibreOffice in Corporate Environments
I felt it only logical to make this discussion a new thread. It appears interesting. I suspect it wont be the first time it is discussed and I do hope the Devs take such comparative discussions seriously. That said, I'd like to start with a Quote from At0mic: Aye. It's just that working in the real world as opposed to ranting on a Linux forum showed me how far Linux and open-source has to go for even making a dent in the monopoly Microsoft has on the corporate desktop. It would be NICE of course if Libre/OpenOffice was used more, but it isn't, and there isn't as yet much imputus to change. Change, as constant as it is doesn't come easy for the majority. Habits are hard to break even when proven wrong. Microsoft is both a majority and a habit and it takes the daring and strong to be free. Linux and open-source is not a place for lazy people. Change starts when enough people question status-quo. When I released this, I decided it's better to stop being so fanatical about Linux and open-soruce and instead understand WHY people use things such as Outlook so much, and I discovered it's because Microsoft are damn good at finding out what their customers want. Implementation needs a little work sometimes, but they aren't stupid. That's a good one. Guess what people want? The want to get on with their lives and really done care how the catalysts get created. So, it follows that if they're already doing that with Option-A, they wont see reasons to try Option-B even when Option-B may be more suitable for them. I speak based on observations from my environs. People here use M$-Office not because they know about exchange or cool features like automation. They do so because they first knew M$-Office. 90% of these people cant understand serious formula syntaxes for Excel or Calc. They are happy with Summations only or a few more basic stuff. Guess what? I'm discussing business here not individuals. You and I know that Calc will conveniently replace their pirated bloat-ware (bloat-ware because they use less than half the features packed into it ... and worse, its a hacked product). These are the people who need Calc and open-source products the most. They cant afford bloat-ware but for some weird reason they just want the label -- Hey, I know/use M$-Office too -- Its crazy Like you said, Microsoft knows how to take advantage of their customer's inclinations (its about the money eventually). These people are lazy so 'ease' matters. Implementation may not be so good underneath but who cares ... they don't even see it. So they 'dope' the less enlightened majority with 'ease' while they tidy up on the hidden mess gradually. It works because changing the majority's collective choice later will be harder when the habit is formed. Here is another example: For instance, I have been porting a tool I developed for 'easing' the pain of fellow lecturers in creating grade/result sheets at our University. It was written for Excel 2003 in VBA. It was relatively 'easier' to develop compared to my route in LibreOffice (well that, because I chose a different language. BASIC would have been much the same ... probably). My discovery is that developing extensions for LibreOffice is W.O.R.K! What is the advantage? The developer is made more aware of the internal workings of LibO. What is the loss? Time! The curve is much more and someone who wants to get going is already gone. So the 'ease' concept sells again for macro developers in M$ world but that doesn't make for better/experienced 'black-belt' developers in the long run (... yeah, I can hear you almost say 'who cares!'). Getting LibO into offices around here means presenting it first before M$ products find their way into those machines. Then the users will never try M$ again even with all the vanilla coatings they come with --OR-- You induce the change by providing 'ease' in form of Extensions in LibO and install libO with those for those businesses then carefully silence M$ products. They wont even miss it. I do that here because those M$ products are pirated anyway. It just makes them more honest business men (lol!). I bet they wont consider M$ again when they're told to PAY FOR THE REAL THING!

In M$-Excel, cell backgrounds can be hatched. The printout is solid and that makes for nicer photocopied documents. LibO provides color backgrounds only. Is this by intention or are there plans to include that feature? For now - I gray-out cells that are usually hatched. Some photocoping machines here don't pick tones very well. That way, I can compare that with mine as see what I'm missing. Okay, okay ... found something. (http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/UNO_component_packaging) Hmm, I need some explanations. Can someone explain what the addImplementation method in the ImplementationHelper class is doing? I need to understand what parameters types are expected. Yeah, I have that in mine too but I just need to know why I'm using it. This is what is throwing the Extension Manager errors: doc = XSCRIPTCONTEXT.getDocument() Says 'XSCRIPTCONTEXT' is not defined**. I read somewhere that the python loader for python extensions cannot load libraries that are not in its path and that any referenced lib should be included in python libs folder. Is this it ... am I looking at that scenario? Any ideas on how to go about fixing this situation? (which python lib folder???) **Note: Same script works fine when placed in the folder: user/.libreoffice/3/user/Scripts/python regards Onyeibo Created a thread on this subject at OOo forum here http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=45t=43398 Its detailed so hopefully, I see more response. thanks -- For unsubscribe instructions e-mail to: users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-users] Extension Manager Runtime exception
I'm trying to package an extension for Calc. so far, the preamble seems okay. But Extension manager chokes on the embedded python macro Says 'XSCRIPTCONTEXT' is not defined. The scripts work when I put them in user/.libreoffice/3/user/Scripts/python so I must be missing something in the extension packaging. Re: [libreoffice-users] installing issues fedora 14
Using Fedora 15 here and loving it. I find only OpenOffice in F14 repositories but LibreOffice from the website should work provided there are no conflicting packages. I'm using version 3.3.3 without problems so I'd suggest you migrate. Gnome3 isn't as bad as people say. After using it for nearly a year (started with the alpha version), I only miss the wobbly effects of compiz in Gnome2... Which is nothing really. I'll move to 3.4.x when it appears in the repos and I hope by then all complaints about it would have been addressed. I also made another observation. One of the reserved sheets have formulas spanning about 10columns by 1750rows (some of them having up to 4-6levels of nested 'IF's with conditional formats). When I remove that sheet, the macro executes instantly. What I don't understand is why Calc still computes that sheet while deleting other sheets. The macro makes no reference to it and it doesn't reference the deleted sheets. The 'culprit' sheet uses named cell refs but all within itself except one cell that references a cache sheet which never gets deleted. More baffling is that it happens with AutomaticCalculation set to False. I wonder if watching the huge range with a listener will produce better performance results. Perhaps you can also add doc.lockControllers() do something doc.unlockControllers() Thanks Andrew, I've tried that. No Joy :( I removed formulas from the 'Culprit' sheet between Row11 and Row 1760, ran the sheet-creation/deletion macro, and the speed was excellent. So it seems OOo/Libreoffice is iterating those cells at each sheet deletion. *That is not good*. Either the 'IF' formula statements attract some performance hits or the named-referencing is doing something weird. I still have one formula summing the 1750rows ... and the macro runs fine. Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Slow Calc Macros
Hi I'm thinking of the best way to explain. its a code that is attached to a software object that monitors that object for changes and runs another code as a result. For example you may want your alarm to ring by 7pm so you set up a code to watch (listen to) the system clock and tell that code to run the alarm when the clock strikes 7pm. That code is a kind of listener. In Calc you can script codes to monitor cell ranges for changes and run other codes based on the result of that change. [libreoffice-users] Slow Calc Macros
I did a python macro that adds sheets, renames them and fills in some formula in select cells. It also has a portion that deletes the sheets. I find that the sheet creation runs faster although there's more lines of code running. Whereas the sheet removal macro is just 2lines and runs 3-5times slower. Both routines use 'FOR' loops (the creating routine even has a nested loop). What could be responsible? Does calc recalculate for each removed sheet? I was saying that the construct of the book is technical and serious-minded. Maybe because I'm new to C/C++ programming style. Its more about the communication style -- started out serious and continued like that till the end. I actually enjoyed Norton's book on Assembly Language much more because you could see the funny personality in the author ... Yet it discussed a language that invokes headaches. I actually did some assembly code then ... But I wouldn't dare now. sent from mobile device -Original Message- From: Andreas Säger ville...@t-online.de Date: Mon, 01 Aug 2011 03:42:22 To: users@global.libreoffice.org Reply-To: users@global.libreoffice.org Subject: [libreoffice-users] Re: Code snippet Am 31.07.2011 20:31, Onyeibo Oku wrote: Oh! [libreoffice-users] Python Equivalents for some BASIC uno calls
BASIC macro devs are having it good with all the documentation on OOo. May I use this forum to say a big thanks to Andrew Pitonyak for his works on the subject. I was trying to clear cell contents in python but I've not been able to figure out the equivalents for the constants e.g. com.sun.star.sheet.CellFlags.FORMULA for clearing formulas. Which module provides the definitions? I found that the example above is same as 16, but I'm trying to avoid explicit use of those constants. I'm also wondering if two constants can be used simultaneously in one clearContents() call e.g. VALUE and STRING sent from mobile device -- Unsubscribe instructions: E-mail to users+h...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/users/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted
[libreoffice-users] LibreOffice Coders??
I think there should be a separate list for those who are into LibreOffice Macros and Extension Scripting ... a place to discuss APIs and UNO usage without delving deep into coding LibreOffice itself. The traffic in the User list is much yet I find no symbiotic benefit in archiving the influx. Re: [libreoffice-users] Has it all, except... Project Manager.
Thats another way of telling people to use KDE. Taskjugger pulls in KDE packages which colours other DEs. I think LO uses GTK ... what is wrong with Planner? But it seems to me that the best foundation comes from TaskJuggler. TaskJuggler itself is more of a engine than a WYSIWYG.
