Re: [libreoffice-users] disappearing impress.

2024-01-12 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
now i remember,

I tried minimizing all the windows, but still did not see it. It was that
tiny. just a single vertical line, but when I moused over it, I could
resize it, et voilà!

So you reminding me about this made me look even closer, and that was it.
How this happens, I am clueless.

[libreoffice-users] disappearing impress.

2024-01-12 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
LO 7.3.7.2
Linux 6.1 environment
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS
Release: 22.04
Codename: jammy

I am experiencing something I remember having before, but I forget how to
deal with it.

Somehow, when I try to open an impress file, it is nowhere to be found.
The Icon in the system tray shows an impress file is open, but it is
nowhere on the screen.

spreadsheet and writer files open normally, it only affects impress.

That is very interesting about the Ubuntu version.

This is a brandnew work station I bought from HP in july. It is a bit
disappointing if they shipped it with the previous LTS.

For the record this about my LO version

quote
Version: 6.4.7.2
Build ID: 1:6.4.7-0ubuntu0.20.04.8
CPU threads: 12; OS: Linux 5.15; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI-Language: en-US
Calc: threaded

So, is Ubuntu behind on the updates?

P.S. I once had a similar problem on Linux Mint, but that went away, the
current issue happened after my switch to Ubuntu.

Re: [libreoffice-users] problems on Ubuntu

2023-09-02 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
Thanks.

I have started to figure it out, though not completely.

When I click on the icon, it shows me an open file. for some reason they
have been minimized. The minimized file appears on the desktop, but it goes
in the upper left hand corner on my dual screen system, right where trash
is. and it is hard to tell, but I can then drag it and enlarge it, and
things are back to normal.
What is still unclear is what caused this to happen, for I have no
awareness of anything I did differently.

[libreoffice-users] problems on Ubuntu

2023-09-02 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
This year, I switched to Ubuntu, and I am having a problem with the opening
of spreadsheet and other Libre Office files, though not with Writer, which
is what I use the most.

When I open a spreadsheet, the icon appears in the margin, but I cannot
actually open the document and get it to display. It must be a setting I
have somehow changed, for I used to be able to open up a spreadsheet, but
not any more.

Clearly, the file is somewhere, but I am not getting it to open up and
display on the screen.

LO Spreadsheet does not allow me to adjust the screen partially. I can

columns, ">0"0 and "3DustNum"

I will have to become a spreadsheet jockey (again) about 40 yrs later...

It gets worse for I get parsing problems with some of the data as well...
so this will require more thought... but we're on the right track.

Funny complication.

One of the variable labels is PM2.5, but in this case that became two
columns, H, and I respectively, like this:

H I
PM2 5

[libreoffice-users] Spreadsheet question

2022-03-13 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
This is more of a generic question.

I am getting information uploaded from a microSD which is a text string of
about 10 variables.

I am at a loss how to convert this into spreadsheet data, with rows and
columns. I there a function to do this???

TXT file, and each string is:
Var1: value1 Var2: value2 Var3: value 3 ... Var10: value10.

[libreoffice-users] Writer display problem in LO 6.4.6.2 on Linux Mint 20/Cinnamon V4.6.7

2020-11-24 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
This problem happens in Writer, but not in Calc, so it is limited to the
module.

I must have done something, for this suddenly started happening.

I can display a page either full screen, or minimize it completely, so it
disappears off the page entirely. In other words, Minimize is now not a
partial screen, but it is in effect parking it off screen, where I can
maximize it again from the Writer icon on the task bar.

Ergo what is lost is the ability to reduce the window to a partial screen -
if I try, it becomes a postage stamp and my only option is to maximize it
to full screen again.

Re: [libreoffice-users] HP Officejet Pro 8630 overprinting lines in LO on Win 10

2016-05-24 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
Thanks for all the suggestions.

All of them are too much effort, if need be I can do the PDF work around.

For now what this means is I'll work with MSO, which I dislike intensely,
but it can't be helped. I foresee in future running my main machine under
Linux Mint entirely, and keeping a Win10 machine just for limited jobs
where I absolutely must have it. This is all too much.

If LO can't make a mainstream printer like this work, that is pretty
devastating.

[libreoffice-users] HP Officejet Pro 8630 overprinting lines in LO on Win 10

2016-05-17 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
Since switching to Windows 10, I've had to abandon LibreOffice, since my
printer inexplicably overprints lines in LO. This never happened in Win7.

Anybody have any suggestions?

At some point I am going to Linux Mint 17.3, but I will need to keep at
least one machine running Win10...

But I have to say, I'd pick LO over MSO any day of the week.

[libreoffice-users] LO 4.4.4.3, losing template settings and other peccadillos

2015-07-29 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
1)
I have s style that uses indentation in the first line, but everytime I
close the doc, that setting is lost and I have to manually restore it.

2)
The program seems to have selective memory about recent documents.

3)
the F11 side panel with the style sheet is lost every time you close a
document, OL used to retain that session, so once you set up how you wanted
to work on a document, those settings would be retained, now they are lost.

I just wanted to get a response from others before I report these items.

thanks. It got worse now... the new version of LO crashes on loading, looks
like I'm going to go clean everything up, and then maybe go back to a prior
version, so in the process, I should be creating new config files as well.

All I can think is to check that the number of copies is set to 1 when
printing. That may sound obvious, but there are two places it can be set,
which might catch you out. After going to File Print, click the General
tab and select the required printer. Then:
 1. Make sure Number of copies on the dialog itself is set to 1.
 2. Click Properties This brings up the printer-specific properties,
where there is also usually an option to set a number of copies (check all
the tabs - it varies by printer).
Set any other options as needed, and click OK to print as usual.

These two settings operate separately... In the past, I've ended up with
9 copies instead of 3, when I set LibreOffice to print 3 copies and set the
printer properties to print 3 copies (thinking changing the option in
LibreOffice should have updated that option for the printer). It turns out
that makes LibreOffice send 3 copies to the printer, which then prints
 those 3 copies 3 times!

 Mark.

I wonder if you have a glitch in your config file[s] that define printing
with LibreOffice. I do not remember the document location, but if you
close LO and save the config file[s] location to a new name, then open LO
again, LO will build a new set of configuration data.

I had this issue a few years where LO was stuck on printing pages as if I
set it to print 4 pages per sheet and then defined it so only one quarter
of the page is printed and the rest of the sheet is left blank. I could
not get the settings to take hold so it would print properly. When I had
LO recreate a fresh configuration the problem was fixed.

To be honest, I have had this happen a few times, but not in the past year
or so. This method was the easiest way for me to fix the printer
issue/glitch that happened. Also, LO was not the only package that has
done this, but at least I did not have to remove and reinstall the whole
package to get the printer problems fixed.

[libreoffice-users] Libre Office version 4.3.5.2 - crashing

2014-12-31 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
Since I've installed the latest version it crashed upon opening.

The LO startup window will flash on the screen, and then the program
crashes.

In short, I had to switch back to MSOffice in the middle of a project, and
after 15 years with OO and LO, it ain't easy going back ;-)

Any suggestions, please?

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and I'm on a Windows 7 machine.

[libreoffice-users] LO 4.0 vs word editing

2013-09-14 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
There is a feature in Word that is not well supported in LO and is breaking
my back

when people make a comment in Word, the text is highlighted and that
highlighting disappears again when you delete the comment.

Try to do that in LO, and it's hopeless. The highlighting does not
disappear, and worse yet, the final letter of the highlighted section comes
out several fontsizes smaller, thus requiring two manual adjustments every
time you delete a comment. Try to do that in a doc with hundreds of
comments.

[libreoffice-users] MS file compatibility in 4.0+ - comments in .doc

Ever since 4.0 I have had increasing problems with file compatibility with

Currently I am working on a project with MSO users and when I open a .doc

comment anchor is reduced in font size, and therefore when you delete the
comment, you now have to go into the text to fix the font size.

Anyone had the same? I think it's time for a bug report.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LOW: uncontrollable line spacing in PDF output???

2012-07-05 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
The solution and the probable cause...

In the end, this problem was fixable, by using 'clear direct formatting' in
the areas affected. (Could not do whole doc lest we wipe out italics and
such).

The amazing fact was that the problem did not manifest in a PDF at the
subdocument level, it just showed up in PDF output from the masterdoc. Very
likely it was some kind of imperfection with the process of switching fonts
somewhere in mid project. Unclear if it is substantial enough to rise to
the level of a reportable issue. It probably is, but I would not know how
to duplicate it.

Back in 2002 I produced a book, going straight to print off a Open Office

straight from OO, skipping DTP altogether.

Today, 10 years later I'm doing a tentative layout for a book in Libre
Office, though this time without the intention of going to print from the
PDF, but I'm finding out I could not do it if I wanted to for there are
some unpredictable anomalies happening in the PDF in LIbre Office. (I have
not tried OO yet. Today I would probably use Scribus or Adobe Indesign to
prepare a proper print layout.) What is happening is that there are
completely unpredictable irregularities in the LO PDF output for which I
 cannot find any evident cause.

 - There is irregular line spacing happening in the PDF output for

reasons that are entirely unclear in the original.
 - In some cases opening smart quotes seem to display at a point size

about 5 times the size of the text in the PDF (not in the actual
 document
files), which at least provides a visual clue for the irregular line
 spacing.

Does anyone have similar experience, and has anyone perhaps found a
workaround, or is this an issue.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LOW: uncontrollable line spacing in PDF output???

2012-07-05 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
Hmm, disappointing though. I cannot see how these kinds of things can be
avoided if you are editing a manuscript, and I never had such problems in
the past with OO in 2002, with a book that certainly went through just as
many revisions.

I am clueless anymore how to fix it. If I fix one, another one pops up...

In the end, this problem was fixable, by using 'clear direct formatting'

The amazing fact was that the problem did not manifest in a PDF at the
subdocument level, it just showed up in PDF output from the masterdoc.
 Very
likely it was some kind of imperfection with the process of switching
 fonts
somewhere in mid project. Unclear if it is substantial enough to rise to
the level of a reportable issue. It probably is, but I would not know how
 to duplicate it.

2012-07-03 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
Well I've tried with doPDF and the same absurd irregularities appear... so
that is not an improvement over the native pdf conversion.

Meanwhile, no pics, no special fonts, unless you consider Times New Roman a
special font. No Cambria Math, just plain old text. And it is really odd
when you see the opening quote on a word appear 10 point sizes bigger in
the PDF than it was in the original text- without any difference in the
point size in the text. And this irregularity then leads to irregular line
spacing, however at times the irregular line spacing happens without any
visual clues as to a 'cause.'

It is difficult to guess the reasons, when the original document is not
available. But there are two things, you should check:
 1. Do you have frames, pictures o.a. alone in a line? Then add a space
before or after them. The line spacing is currently broken in those cases.
 2. Do you use a font with extended features like Cambria Math has?
Those fonts are not handled correctly.

For true diagnostics the file itself is needed.

 Kind regards
 Regina

Try printing the document to a PDF printer as a testing option.

I use doPDF [free] for Windows and CUPS-PDF for Ubuntu.

I tend to use them for my documents that have specialty fonts that needs
to be embedded into the PDF files that might not Export to PDF properly.

What I would do is try a PDF printer that created a PDF file instead of
printing to paper. See what it looks like, compared to the Export to PDF
option file and a print to paper printed document.

Those fonts that have extended features or special kerneling, or
special line spacing options, etc., can be really a pain to get either a
PDF or paper document to print out correctly.

There are a lot of these fonts out there that can have problems with your
printed document. I hate them, but they can be useful if they have a
 specific use.

Re: [libreoffice-users] LOW: uncontrollable line spacing in PDF output???

2012-07-03 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
Well, this is even more bizarre than I thought. This is all happening in
the context of a master document.

In unpredictable ways, there are either ellipses or opening quotes that
suddenly appear enlarged in the pdf of the master doc, causing also
irregular line spacing.
The same problem is not evident in the original doc, or even in the pdf of
the doc - it only manifests in the pdf of the masterdoc.

and... I can fix it by deleting the seemingly enlarged characters, and
replacing them with the same characters from a known good location.

In short the distortions are incidental to the merging into the masterdoc,
and have nothing to do with the PDF conversion, but are inherent to the
assembly process of subdocs into the masterdoc.

[libreoffice-users] Master Document numbering irregularities

2012-06-03 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
LO 3.5.4.2 on Win7

In a Master Document of some 300 pages -- a book of some 15 chapters -- I
am seeing repeated jumps in page numbering in the middle of some chapters,
and by the end it adds up to a discrepancy of 10 pages, for utterly and
completely unclear reasons. E.g. the page numbering will jump from page 234
to 236, skipping page 235 in the middle of a chapter, and in all this
happens 10 times.

I don't know what causes it, so I have not found any way of dealing with
it. Except that apparently, in the course of making revisions, and running
a lot of update cycles, the problem gradually disappeared.

[libreoffice-users] first line indents in .odt vs .doc in LO 3.5.2.2. on Win7

2012-04-16 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
This problem is an evolutionary perception of an earlier one.

I had a problem with hanging indents in a .doc format, but after a few
iterations it seemed to go away. However this is all part of a book
project, so subsequently I've tried the same thing on other files
(Chapters), and here is what seems to happen.

The provenance of these files is they were started as .odt, and then
converted to .doc for my collaboration partners who are still using
wordstar, sorry..., msword. While in the first file the problem was
mysteriously solved, in subsequent files it is happening again, and in fact
the only way for me to preserve the hanging indents is to work in .odt.
When I even try to define the first line indent in a .doc file, that
formatting is lost as soon as the file is saved.

For now the workaround is to go back to .odt, and apply the desired
paragraph formatting where it is needed, and save the .odt. Then I can save
as .doc, and reopen it in MSW, and reapply the first line indent in the
paragraph definition in Word, and subsequently it is preserved properly, to
the point that it is then editable in LO, and I can reapply that paragraph
format and it continues to be saved properly.

As a variation, if I open the .odt in MSW it gives me an error, though it
will recover the document.

Thanks, clear enough.

We're really in that final stage or proofreading that the formatting is an
integral part, so it cannot be avoided, but yes, I'm in control of the
formatting. And yes, in the end we're going to PDF the final product.

Are your partners really collaborating in the *formatting* of your
document, or are you just all collaborating on the content? If the latter,
you could exchange the material as plain text, leaving the formatting until
the content was settled, and then apply necessary formatting later. Use
styles and this could be quick. And you may be able then to distribute
 what you need as PDF.

 I trust this helps.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: document conversion problems, losing formatting information.

2012-04-11 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
This gets more bizarre, in a subsequent version of the same document, Word
now opens the file just fine and displays the first line indents as
intended, even though that formatting function does not seem to exist in
word as part of paragraph formatting in the same way as it does in LO.
MY LO version was 3.5.2.2 and I'm on Windows 7.

The issue is the same if I do it manually or via the style sheet. It is
lost as soon as I try to save it in .doc.

I cannot seem to replicate the first line indentation in Word, because it
does not have the option, I have found no way to work around this.

If your version of Libreoffice is v.3.5.2, please check the section on the
3.5 Features page that is entitled: ODF 1.2 Conforming Documents, (you'll
find the section near the bottom of the page).

Re: [libreoffice-users] how about 'recent documents?'

2012-04-09 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
Well, I'm on Win7, I renamed the registrymodifications.xcu file to
something else, and then I restarted the computer, opened LO writer, and
started a document, made one change, saved the document, closed the
document, and looked in 'recent documents' - but it still shows 'no
documents'

It seems to me that there must be something else going on.

If you're running LibreOffice in windows 7, the profile path should be

You can access this place directly by typing in the Run dialog (opened by
pressing the windows key and the R key, Win+R):
 %APPDATA%\LibreOffice\3\user

once here, simply rename the registrymodifications.xcu file to something
else and check if the recent documents issue is still there.

On system other than windows, I'm not sure about where the profile is
located (most likely ~/.libreoffice under linux though)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Word incompatibilities with changes and comments

2012-02-19 Thread Rogier F. van Vlissingen
So quite apparently, the problem is in MSW2007, where it opens the files to
the last version prior to the changes, and you then have to deliberately
display the final version, and the only way to get a clean version in
MSW2007 is apparently to accept the changes there.

I've now tried it a few times, but MSW2007 stubbornly keeps opening up docs
in which all changes were accepted in LibreOffice (and I just went to 3.5),
to display showing markup, which you then have to either switch off, or
accept all the changes in order to display a clean version in MSW2007.

In a collaboration like I'm having it means that in practice I must accept
the changes twice, once in LO, and then once again in MSW2007, before I
hand it off to colleagues using MSW2007

What settings are you using for tracking changes? If you have Edit |
Changes | Record ticked in LibreOffice, you will be preserving the
original along with the changes. If you have Edit | Changes | Show
unticked, you will see just the edited version and not the hidden originals
(so your document will look clean).

When you open a document that includes tracked changes in Word, the
original items will be there along with the changes. What you see will
depend on your Review setting in Word. In particular, if you have this set
to Original, you will not see any of the changes.

o If you don't want to track changes, untick Edit | Changes | Record in
 LibreOffice.
o If you want to track changes but then want to see in Word what you have
done, change the Review setting in Word.

 I trust this helps.

Thanks, I got it working, but I'm still puzzled by something...

not sure what the problem is... and yes I was aware that language is
defined at the character level, but it should somehow be possible to
define the language for a whole doc at once.

Hello Rogier,

Did you define the language of the document, either in its style
(FormatStyles (Control-T)) or in direct formatting
(FormatCharacterFontLanguage) ?
When the dictionary is properly installed, it should have a v-sign
next to it in the list of languages in Font-Language (as well as in
the preferences page you mention language settingslanguagesstandard
language

The language is a characteristic of the Character (letter in Dutch)
and can be defined for a single word, a sentence, a paragraph or an
entire text.

Hope thie helps - or else try to explain more in detail what you
do/whathappens.
