I can't test this here, (one computer, one printer) but an educated

should be sent to the default printer as defined on that particular
machine.

It would be nice, but how can we achive this ?
The user interface does not allow to select a blank printer.
Should we unzip the odt file and remove the printer name by hand in the
XML file ?

We cannot change global parameters in Tools- Options- Load/Save-
General because for some templates we need the printer parameters, but
not for all.

You can do something with macro's. Not too complicated.

Nice idea. Never tried it, but should be simple to test.

Aren't there two printers listed? From what you say here, it seems
not. I thought that both the local and remote one would be listed.

Should we unzip the odt file and remove the printer name by hand in

You could try, but make sure you keep a backup, just in case everything
goes horribly wrong.

Another option comes to mind - With the template loaded, change the
printer to be used via the standard print dialog, then do a
File-Templates-Save, using a different name for the template. For
example; MyTemplate_LocalPrinter instead of MyTemplate_RemotePrinter.

You can set the clients to not use the printer settings of the
documents. You find this in Tools - Options - Load/Sava - General -
Section Load - second item.

Kind regards
