Really will depend on the file formats you are trying to open. The old
binary filter code was still in LO up to version 3.6. Whether that set
of filters caters to your needs is another matter.

I would also look at StarOffice 5.2 if you can still find a copy around
and get it to run - there might be some extra filters in there
(especially on Windows) that are no longer around in present versions of
LO, contrary to Charles' suggestion.

I am using libreoffice 3.5.7.2
Basically I am looking for a report builder which can allow me to easily add
formulas in reports like total no. of records, sum etc.

I don't see any version for PPC  Macs on the download page. LibreOffice for Macs seems to be 
Intel only.
