Ok, so I have this spreadsheet, and a Writer document with embedded
spreadsheets.
It's an invoice document with two pages each with it's own spreadsheet.
Because I
could never figure out how to link the subtotal from one page (i.e. one
internal embedded
spreadsheet to another) to the next, I linked in a subtotal from the time
tracking spreadsheet.
Apparently internal document links are illegal in LibreOffice.

Why? I don't know. He's on third.

Well it *USED* to automatically update, back in the day. Not sure when it
broke. Maybe I broke
something in the configuration. It's pretty freaking fragile. I breath the
wrong way and something breaks.
Anyway.

I noticed maybe last month it's not updating anymore. Again this month,
nothing. Opening up the links
dialog and it shows as manual and no option to make it automatic. Searched
help docs and it says it
needs to be a DDE link. Ok, fine. So I follow the instructions and make a
"DDE" link. Only hen it does that
it doesn't include the file path, so it can't find the link. Useless. Tried
to edit it. I doesn't like that.

This should be a simple no-brainer. Here I am 2 hours later. Wasting a
couple hundred dollars of my time
doing a task that can't be much simpler. I was doing this stuff in Word
Perfect two decades ago. No three.
God has it been that long.

Well, I used to use a table but that was ***way*** worse in Open Office
(pre-LibreOffice). Professional or unprofessional. It gets my invoices out.
Sure, I could write a program to do it. In fact, I have written programs
that do it. But this is what I use for this client, because they want a
Word document. The structure of ODF, is so bizarre, that I don't have the
time to devote to design a program to build an ODF compliant document. So,
this is what I use. Because the client is always right. That is the first
rule of being professional. I build it in Libreoffice and export it to Word.

LibreOffice, should be able to handle a linked field properly. I don't see
how the automatic linking can work at all. I can't link from within a
document and I can't link from another document. Looks like a bug. Maybe
it's a feature. The automatic linking that doesn't link.

Wow! Sensitive much? I didn't tell anyone what to do.

No I didn't upload an example document.
No I haven't filed a bug report, because I was asking for guidance. By
hopefully someone willing to be helpful and more experienced with
everything LibreOffice than me, rather than someone to berate me.
Yes, I included the Office Version, but since I don't get copies of my own
posts, I don't t see them.

But, here it is again.
I'm using Libreoffice version 4.4.3.2 in Mint 17 64 bit. The document was
created in a previous version. Possibly even in Open Office. I would have
to look at previous invoices to determine that. It's at least 2 years old.

It is not a spreadsheet, as I stated, it is a Writer document with a 2 page
invoice with two embedded spreadsheets that links to an external
spreadsheet time entry document. There is probably a better and more
efficient way of doing this. I did this out of frustration from using
tables where I would copy and paste from my timelog, but had to do a third
step in between because that's just the way it is in Writer, even though
there had been feature requests to change/fix that for years.

Doesn't work is a perfectly good problem description when something doesn't
work.

It draws from my time entry for this client. It's a manual process. I
manually create this every month for my client, because they want this.
I don't create invoices like this for personal pleasure. I have C, VB, and
COBOL programs to do these kinds of things. Programs I've written.

You state there are five ways to o this, but don't even enumerate them for
me. That's hardly a solution description.

As for what I did to accomplish this "doesn't work". It's easy.

1) Open Writer  and add some text.
2) Add a spreadsheet with 5 columns. Give it a name, Table1. Make the first
column a 2 decimal place number. Make the 4th column an hourly rate. Make
the 5th column the product of columns 1 and 4. Add a page subtotal to the
last visible 5th column cell. Add a credit line cell above that. Add a
detail subtotal line above that, and have it sum all the lines above. The
page subtotal cell is the detail line minus the credits.
3) Add a page break, copy the text to the new page.
4) Add a spreadsheet to this page in the same manner as the above
spreadsheet. With two differences, describe below.
5) Instead of a page subtotal, call the final line Invoice Total.
6) Add a link to the page subtotal cell in the previous spreadsheet to the
summation formula in the invoice total cell. Do it in this manner.
6.a.) Enter the summation formula to subtract the page credits from the
detail subtotal. Add a plus. Enter the previous page spreadsheet. Uh-oh
can't do that.
7) Copy and paste. No that doesn't work.
8) Paste Special. No that doesn't work.
8) Manually enter the link. I've never found the right syntax. This might
work, if only I knew the magic words. "Table1.$Sheet1.$G$36" doesn't work.

10) Now open a new speadsheet document and relabel sheet1 as Invoice2.
11) Enter a dollar amount in the first cell.
12) Save it.
13) Go back to the Invoice document.
14) Enter the Invoice total cell, add a plus, create a link to the cell in
the spreadsheet document by going to that spreadsheet and double-clicking
on the proper cell. Go back to Invoice document and hit enter.
15) Voila a manual link.

16) Now let's make a DDE link.
17) Go back to the spreadsheet copy the cell.
18) Back to the Invoice sheet. On the cell below the invoice total paste
special and set the link checkbox. Hit enter.
19) It doesn't work. No path to the document.
20) Manually enter the path to the document. Voila you have something. It
doesn't work. But you have displayed text and not an error message. Or you
have a manual link like before.

I've attached the documents to reproduce it. I didn't include them before,
because I expected someone to tell me something like read you're doing it
wrong, FAQ #213456 for the solution, and thus pointing me to a solution
that actually works.

I'm not getting anything like that when I try. I'll try with a new user
account. Maybe there's something wrong with a configuration file. Then I'll
try a few other things. Now that I know what a good link looks like.

[libreoffice-users] Gallery will not open in Libreoffice 4.4, no error reported

I'm having trouble getting LibreOffice.

Libreoffice:
Version: 4.4.6.3

this is from the official ppa:

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/libreoffice/libreoffice-4-4/ubuntu trusty
main

I had a manually installed 4.4.6, because the default in Mint 17 is still
4.2. So I had removed 4.2, but both were installed briefly. I'm sure, I did
something to screw it up, but don't know where to look to fix it.

What I've last done is:
1) apt-get remove libreoffice4.4
2) added the ppa to the sources list.
3) apt-get update
4) apt-get install libreoffice, which installed the libreoffice4.4.6.3
above noted.

Still no Gallery. The option is there to view it, but nothing happens when
I try.

[libreoffice-users] Libre Office saving spreadsheets as images when saving as Word docx!?

I've just discovered that when I save a copy of an invoice it's saving the
spreadsheet part as an image. This is not the behavior I expected.

I'm running:
Linux mint 17 64 bit
KDE 4.13
LibreOffice 4.4.7.2

When I save a copy of this file as Word 2007/2010/2013 (*.docx)
if converts the spreadsheets as an image!

Is this some setting? I've tried Googling, but it keeps showing my link on
how to save things as an image. Completely not what I want to do.

The older Word 97 format is not readable anymore by one of my customers. If
I save an 2003 .xml version Libreoffice can't even open a readable document
again!?

Are there some configuration details I'm missing?

I can't just send it in ODF. Unless MS Office has suddenly decided to
support reading ODF files. Last time I tried it didn't.  I could send it in
PDF, and will if I have no other choice. If LO can't export a simple
spreadsheet embedded in a document to a current MS format, or read back
what it wrote, then they should not be included as options to export to.

I use this system for my business. It has to work, or I have to use
something else.

No, I use Libre Office, and used Open Office for years before that to make
my invoices. One of my clients started complaining after upgrading to
Office 2013 that my older exported from LO to a Word 97 format wouldn't
display, or display properly. Not sure exactly what his issue is. I have
seen a similar issue when importing from ODF into Google Docs. It does
funky things, but the spreadsheet remains a spreadsheet, however the
document the layout is completely messed up.

So since my client can't read the LO document "saved as" a Word 97
document, I started saving in the latest Office layout that LO allows. It
was then this saved layout, that I discovered a few days ago is converting
the speadsheet to an image. I discovered it when opening one in LO to make
copy some data from, after accidentally overwriting the previous ODF
version.

Rather, than pulling from a backup.

I will attempt your suggestion to save the spreadsheet as an xlsx, and try
importing into a docx file. It would mean switching to a .docx template,
rather than an ODF template.  But if it works so be it.

Ah, well that didn't work. I can save as xlsx, and it preserves the sheet.
I can then embed it into  a .docx file, but if I save it or "save a copy",
it converts it to an image. Not the behavior one would expect. This really
seems like a bug to me. Saving an embedded object should preserve the type
of embedded object.

Even if I link to the external object it still flattens it to a graphic.
What!? It destroys the link! That is not standard behavior! That is a bug
for sure.
 Does that happen in the latest version of Libre Office? I'm not thrilled
at the idea of pinning to a newer version of Libre Office, but if it fixes
this bug I'd do it.

As long as I maintain the object in an ODF format, as a document or a
template, it works as it should. It's only once LO saves it into an Office
2013 format, that it converts to an image. The Office 97 format preserves
the embedded spreadsheet(s).

This is something special I do for a major client, to increase his customer
satisfaction.

Again, I don't.  It's a special thing I do for a special client who has
asked for this to make his work easier. It should have been a simple thing
to do, and has been or years. But suddenly when I use the newer format it
doesn't work the same way.

I can export it to PDF, and I have confirmed that I can copy and paste the
text, from the PDF, but it loses it's spreadsheet layout. I don't know if
that will work for him. So he will be able to use it, but at a reduced
level of productivity.

It's at least better than an image where he can't copy and paste the data
at all.

It's a far cry from the simple solution of it being a spreadsheet. I may
just have to send him the underlying spreadsheet instead of the nicer
format of the company invoice, or in addition to it. The spreadsheet might
even be better for him.

Well none of that worked. :/

However, I can save as .xlsx and manipulate it in Office 2010. I can
confirm my copy of LibreOffice is creating unusable files in Office 2010,
and probably 2013 as well.

So I  guess I'll send him a .xlsx invoice, going forward.

I suspect I have a bad configuration file or setting. I'll install a clean,
newer Mint release on a spare partition of two, and test a fresh
Libreoffice in a fresh and clean install and see if this problem goes away.
Probably some old configuration setting that I kept in an update, that I
should have rejected, removed, or changed.

Yes, most people can read a pdf. That's not the issue here.

The issue is a customer wants to copy and paste the contents of the invoice
for his own bookkeeping processes. Copy and pasting from a pdf is not the
same as copy and paste from a spreadsheet. I have a specific need to save a
copy as a Microsoft Office readable format. I have been saving as a copy
for years as a Microsoft Word document for this one client, and it has
worked until recently. Most likely I did an upgrade on Libre Office and
broke something. I have found a solution, that saving only the spreadsheet
portion and sending that as an Excel document will work for him. Until I
figure out what I broke.

delimited file for all that matters. I don't do a lot of fancy stuff in my

I'm not sure that would work. There is the system level configuration, and
also my individual level configuration. The error (probably my fault) in
the configuration could be in either one, since I am the administrator of
the system. I could try it on one of the other company computers, but the
system configuration would still be my doing, and the upgrades and upgraded
configurations also my doing, or worse that of my administrative assistant
(not exactly a computer geek).

I have repeatedly said why I need to export to docx. Because I have a
client who takes the data from my invoice and copies it into his accounting
system. As a spreadsheet, he can copy and paste what he wants without
having to type it all in. The older .doc format I used to use is now
broken, as a result of some update I applied to this (now) quite old
version of Libre Office, running on an old LTS Qiana Linux Mint desktop.

I can indeed open the original (and my company's official version) ODT
document in newer MS Office programs, but they don't like the embedded
spreadsheet part and strip it out. This defeats the purpose of opening in
Word 2010 or later as that's the important part. ;)

So, until I can install the latest stable Mint, and test it on my system,
and then upgrade the rest of the systems. I will just invoice him with an
actual spreadsheet as an invoice. Maybe I'll even move entirely to that
layout.

In trying to resolve this, I've deleted the embedded sheet and added a new
one. So I doubt that is the issue. I may have deleted the original embedded
spreadsheet years ago, for a similar reason. But this template here would
have the embedded sheet, I've been using for at least 3 years.

I've added sample data in it, so you can see the kind of data and minimal
calcs I do. There is normally an external link on the second page of the
invoice, when there is a second page, because I've never found a way to
link internally to the first embedded spreadsheet, and using a single
spreadsheet, has never given me the look I wanted to present. (I know,
stupid reason for not using a single spreadsheet with recurring headers.)
The link is removed here. I had tried removing the link from the two page
invoices, in case that was the cause, a while ago. But this also is a
problem with one page invoices. So it's not that. I haven't actually used a
template in ages. Just clear the previous month's invoice and save to a new
file. I know, my system could be streamlined in so many ways, but I seem to
never give myself enough time to do my internal change requests. ;)
