Nothing. F18 was EOL a long time ago. Updates via yum aren't available.

If you need something from the last time things were updated you need to find
them and download them manually from
http://archives.fedoraproject.org/pub/archive/fedora/linux/updates/18/x86_64/
and you'll need to resolve the dependencies yourself. (Insert the normal
advice about running old, outdated, and not security patched software here)

Yeah, he suggested that.

If you want this to just be temporary, you could (as root):
ifconfig 1.1.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0

There's a lot of talk on this list about THE nvidia driver.

There are many of them and they claim to support different chipsets.
Here's the 'legacy' list. I believe rpmfusion provides most of them.

That's all there is to it. Your system now knows that address 1.1.1.1
can be reached directly (no gateway) on that interface.

And how does that destination respond?

It's not as simple as you suggest. The Buffalo device probably has no
(reachable) gateway, so it will only be able to route outgoing packets
of its own if the destination is within the broadcast network
corresponding to its address and netmask.

The right way to do this was always to add 1.1.1.2 to Bob's interface.
Either, as was suggested, using the older (deprecated) ifconfig command:

ifconfig eth0:0 1.1.1.2 netmask 255.255.255.0
or using ip:
ip addr add 1.1.1.2/24 dev eth0

missing repo, no repomd, no metalink.xml

2015-10-06 Thread Shane

Hi,

I'm using Fedora18 x86_64. (Yes, it's old.) Within the last few
days I found that I cannot install or list anything from the fedora-18
repo via yum. I get the typical errors everybody complains about "no
repomd" and "metalink.xml does not exist". Common workarounds from
google searches haven't worked.

I opened the link spit out by yum
"http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/metalink?repo=fedora-18=x86_64;
in a browser. It downloaded a metalink file (no .xml suffix). The 3rd
(or so) line of the file has the following dubious message.

# repo = fedora-18 arch = x86_64 error: invalid repo or arch

Following this line is a HUGE listing of available repos and
architectures. There is nothing shown for fedora-18 arch i386 or
x86_64. In fact, even fedora-source-18 repo is missing. I don't think
this is a yum problem on my system.

Is there something else I can try (yum-wise)? If I need to report it
then where? I'm quite certain that this is the wrong list.

  Thanks.

  Shane

That's not generally how IPv4 works. In the simple, most common

defaults to 1.1.1.1, that's probably either /8 or /24. In that case,
the device will be able to respond to addresses prefixed with 1.anything

It's technically possible that the device could have a 0.0.0.0/0 direct
route on its network interface, but it's extremely unlikely. I've never
seen a device configured that way by default. (Such a device would try
to resolve all addresses via ARP.) If a device were configured that
way, users probably wouldn't be instructed to use 1.1.1.2 as their own
address, as Bob was. And that's really the point: Bob stated the
requirement that he use 1.1.1.2 as his address, and adding a direct
route doesn't accomplish that.

I don't know that Bob actually said he HAD to use 1.1.1.2. My guess
(without knowing what the mysterious "device" is) is that the device
used 1.1.1.1/24 and it suggested he use 1.1.1.2 as his address. If that
was the case, than any 1.1.1.0/24 address (other than 1.1.1.1) would
work.

I think the proper way to do handle this (if this reset thing is going
to be ongoing) would be to:

1. Create a udev rule that uses the MAC addr of the NIC to tie
the device to a standardized name (e.g. "eth0"). I absolutely
detest this damned renaming of devices based on when they got
scanned by the kernel. It is a spectacularly idiotic idea and
the fact you can rename it in udev hints that the kernel
developers tacitly agree.

2. Create create an alias to that new name (e.g. "eth0:0").

3. Stick a permanent 1.1.1.2/24 address on that alias.

That way he can always get to 1.1.1.1 (with or without a gateway) since
the aliased NIC and the reset device will be on the same network.

The best solution is to set up the device so it is on the same network
as his machine and figure out why he has to reset it to factory
defaults all the time. I could possibly live with resets to a saved
configuration although I'd be rather annoyed. Having to reset to
factory defaults constantly would indicate the thing should be junked
because of a really poor design. Heaven knows what other nefarious
things it's doing (I sure hope this is all behind a firewall and you
monitor all network connections with something like snort).

Fedora Server 21 - Screen not clearing on exit.

2015-10-06 Thread Aero Maxx

Hello,

I use the screen tool quite a lot for running processes that I need to
complete but aren't able to be connected to the box for the length of
time it takes for it to complete.

I've noticed the last few months, (cant remember how long exactly but
its been less than a year i'd say) that when I either create a screen or
resume an existing screen, when either of these are exitted the output
is still displayed within the window that I went to when I detacted from
the screen.

I cant recall anything that I may have done to stop the screen from
clearing when I detacted from them.

I was just wondering if anyone was able to shed any light on why it
might be doing this.

I'm using Fedora Server 21.

Thanks,
Daniel.

"NM_CONTROLLED=yes" indicates that, yes, that device is controlled via
Network Manager (and therefore modifiable via the GUI). If that's
missing or set to "no", then the device is controlled via the settings
in the ifcfg- file.

Are you starting screen, then issuing the command inside the screen

the command has started?

Thanks, Heinz, but that has not solved the problem. Kevin Fenzi wrote
in my bug report:

So, H.264 isnt a codec Fedora ships (It has patents associated with it).

parole moved from gstreamer 0.10, to gstreamer1 in that update.

Likely you have a package that provides a H.264 decoder for gstreamer
0.10, but not gstreamer 1 installed. Likely it's called
'gstreamer-plugins-ugly' or similar. If you install the
'gstreamer1-plugins-ugly' from the same place the new parole should
play those files.

The problem still persists, unfortunately.

My installed gstreamer packages are the following:

gstreamer.x86_64
gstreamer-ffmpeg.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-bad.x86_64
gstreamer-plugins-bad-free.x86_64

"add a routing table entry to direct packets for

After a bit of Googling I see the following which seems like it might
apply to my need to access the Buffalo ethernet bridge device I needed
to access after doing a default "reset" to 1.1.1.1.

"Directly Attached NetworkThe local network entry corresponds to the
directly attached network. IP packets destined for the directly attached
network are not forwarded to a router but sent directly to the
destination. Note that the Gateway and Interface columns match the IP
address of the node. This indicates that the packet is sent from the
network adapter corresponding to the node's IP address."

I don't know exactly how to do that, an example perhaps ...

PS generated file -> pdftotext -layout and images

2015-10-06 Thread Gary Stainburn
Hi folks,

Thanks to help from here I've managed to get pseudo printers working with CUPS
to allow Windows PC's to print a document which then gets converted to PDF,
has stationery applied to it, and the result emailed back to the requesting
user.

I'm now on phase 2 of the project which uses

pseudo printer -> ps2pdf -> pdftotext -layout

to generate a text file which then is used to import data into my systems.
This method is because the system that generates the report doesn't have an
export facility.

My only problem with this is that the generating system uses images of a tick
and a cross to indicate some boolean values.

Can anyone suggest how I can convert these ticks and crosses back to their
boolean value?

Peer to peer adhoc network setup using network manager. ARP, gateways and routes...

2015-10-06 Thread linux guy
I need to connect a wifi device to my Linux computer. There is no router in
between the two. Just my computer and the device. The device has a fixed
IP, 192.168.0.10. It has its own Wifi interface built in It isn't capable
of connecting to a router. It has a fixed IP address.

My home wifi network uses 192.168.1.x. It has a router. It works fine. My
computer connects to it via its built in wifi interface.

I have added a USB wifi interface (dongle) to my computer to connect to the
device. My computer displays the device properly in a network manager scan.
So the device is available for connections.

Next I edit the connection for the device in network manager. The SSID is
filled in from the scan. I select Ad-hoc mode. Band, Channel, etc. are all
automatic.

Next I edit wifi security. The device is open security wise, so I select
None.

Next I edit the IPV4 tab. Under connection method I select Manual.

The next fields are DNS server and Search Domains. In a point to point
connection, there will be no DNS server. I leave the boxes blank.

Next up is adding the static IP address, netmask and gateway.

I set the address of my interface to be 192.168.0.123, because it was
recommended by another user who connected with an Apple device. I set
netmask to 255.255.255.0.

The next thing to set is the gateway address. Here is where I get
confused. What is a gateway in the context of a peer to peer connection ?
I try to leave it blank, but it won't let me. So I put in 0.0.0.0. I
also tried the address of the interface (192.168.0.123) and the address of
the device (192.168.0.10)

Then there is a route field. I add a route for the ip address
192.168.0.10, using a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and again it asks for a
gateway. I tried 0.0.0.0, the device address and the interface address.

I don't touch any of the IPV6 settings because the device doesn't support
IPV6 addresses.

I save everything and connect to the device successfully.

I run "arp -a" and the device is found connected to the interface. Yippee !

Pinging the device fails. Destination Host Unreachable.

When I ping the device and watch in wireshark I see an ARP broadcast
message "Who has 192.168.0.10 ? Tell 192.168.0.123". 192.168.0.123 is the
static IP for the interface. And that is as far as the process gets.

When I watch the other interface and do a ping to a local device, I see the
same ARP broadcast message, but also a reply message to it. 192.168.1.142
is at And then the process continues successfully.

So what am I missing in the setup of my adhoc connection such that the OS
knows that a message sent to my device (192.168.0.10) gets routed through
the USB wifi interface, ie the ARP broadcast message gets a reply ?

Thanks.

the reasonable thing to do is to add an "eth0:0" with the right addressing as

Re: Peer to peer adhoc network setup using network manager. ARP, gateways and routes...

2015-10-06 Thread linux guy
I figured out the problem. The gateway addresses need to be empty. If you
delete the entry and create a new one you can use an empty gateway
address. If you have an address in the field, including 0.0.0.0, you
cannot save an empty gateway address.

Incidentally, where do you find nvidia drivers?
I can't find one for my chip, NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M

The standard nouveau driver I am using with F23beta is not perfect
(eg some web-pages are distorted) but just about passable.

Where is the "test mailing list"?
According to
the "test" list is "For testing and quality assurance of Fedora releases".

when you specify it yourself).

I experimented with this on Rawhide, which gets frequent kernel updates. It
appears that if you add the installonlypkgs line but don't include kernel,
it will upgrade that rather than install. Also, if you add kernel-devel, it
will unconditionally remove the oldest version of kernel-devel, even if
you're running the oldest kernel, so kernel and kernel-devel will get out of
sync. Yum-deprecated keeps kernel and kernel-devel in sync regardless of
which one you're running.

Applicable bugs:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1079906

In https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1226402#c1 Josh Boyer is
opposed to dnf treating kernel-devel the same as yum, but IMO the vast
majority of people with kernel-devel installed are using it for compiling
3rd-party modules, and that's what they want. There should at least be an
option for making dnf behave the same.

I was able to accomplish what I needed to do and the system was returned
to normal without much difficulty but I am interested in your suggestion
since this is something that comes up at times however I could use a
some clarification of:

"add a routing table entry to direct packets for
1.1.1.1 out the appropriate interface."

I don't know exactly how to do that, an example perhaps ...

ip route add to 1.1.1.1 dev enp0s25

That's all there is to it. Your system now knows that address 1.1.1.1
can be reached directly (no gateway) on that interface. At some point
you'll probably want to run "ip route delete 1.1.1.1", but there's no
rush unless you want to connect to a 1.1.1.1 address out there on the
internet.

Hmm, looks like the mailing list could do with a better description
then. I knew of the test list from reading it being mentioned, here,
many times over the years I've been on the list. I wouldn't have
guessed it from that "corporate jargon speak" description.

The "users" list description (Community support for Fedora users) is
only slightly better. Sounds like counselling for people in dire

Also, many developers on the Test list *do not read the Users list*
(i.e. this one). Reporting problems with unreleased versions of Fedora
on the Users list is very likely to be a waste of everyone's time.

Set either nsAccountLock: true or change accountUnlockTime: to be in the future.
You can get the current DS system time for the root DSE, and just add to it.

It's highly likely that it will simply use its only interface as
a default route, at least that's the way it worked for the two IP
cameras I set up that also had an initial IP address of 1.1.1.1.
Of course that's going to work only for a direct connection with
no router in the way, but that's also true for "ip addr add
1.1.1.2/24 dev eth0".

fedup leaves me stuck between 21 and 22

2015-10-06 Thread sean darcy

running updated 21.

fedup --network 22

Preparation seemed to go well:

[ 191.911] (II) fedup:() /usr/bin/fedup exiting cleanly at Tue
Oct 6 12:26:25 2015

Rebooted.

Died somewhere in upgrading. Is there any log of the upgrade ?

No new kernel installed. Reboots into 21 kernel. Lots of dupes. yum
upgrade just give 21 updates.

fedup no help:

fedup --network 22
usage: fedup [options]
fedup: error: argument --network: version must be higher than 22

Any help appreciated.

sean

Take a look at /boot/grub2/grub.cfg. If some kernels are missing, it's
likely they were incompletely installed.
