I think fedup is not more available.


It still is available, but has been re-written as a wrapper around 
dnf-plugin-system-upgrade:


# rpm -qf /usr/bin/fedup
dnf-plugin-system-upgrade-0.4.1-1.fc23.noarch

I think fedup is not more available. The new upgrading tool is a dnf-plugin:
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/package/dnf-plugin-system-upgrade/

Basically you need to run:
sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=23
sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot

or:
sudo dnf distro-sync --releasever=23

About which desktop you will get, I'm not sure, but I think that every
singel package will be upgrade to the most recent version available on
the new fedora releasea, so both DE should be available for you after
the upgrading.

Because certain desktop programmers didn't consider it worth their while

PCs I switched to Mate, and it does have a basic slideshow screensaver.


I'm still using KDE.

I've found the settings page for xscreensaver and it includes the ability to 
set a top directory for images but there seems to be no way of selecting that 
as the default saver.

screen with just the mouse cursor visible. Not even a task bar.
The only way that I have found to get my work spaces back is to logout and
login again.

5. Some fonts (particularly within Wine apps??) have changed and are much less
readable than before.
MyHeritage Family Tree Builder is one example. I have no idea which fonts were
used in F21 nor in F22.

I'd be grateful for any help in resolving these.

Regarding point 2.
I have confirmed that libidn is installed (11.6.5) and idna.h is in 
/usr/include/unicode but Net::LibIDN still will not install.

I suspect a version issue.
Does anybody know what version of libidn is required by Net::LibIDN?

This issue did not exist in F21 and the version of Net::LibIDN has not changed 
in ages so I suspect a Fedora issue rather than PERL.

I would say check that your repro you want are enable and do update with
dnf:

# dnf update

On my F22 system under Libreoffice I see...

Courier New
Courier 10 Pitch

I know that I got the "Courier New" fonts by installing the
msttcorefonts package that needs to be built and installed manually.

And I think xorg-x11-fonts-Type1 gave me "Courier 10 Pitch".

I think you're saying you have a "Courier New 10" listed previously?

you know what package gave that to you?

Thank you very much, I did a dnf install on 'xorg-x11-fonts-Type1' and
it had Courier 10 Pitch which is exactly what I needed.

I did, but it does not help.
What is wrong with this file: /usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/fedup/boot.py ?

Incidentally, how exactly does dnf determine $releasever ?
And how can I determine what value is assigned to this variable?
According to "man dnf.conf" it is obtained from RPMDB, 
which I take refers to __db.00{123} in /var/lib/rpm .

I see that according to /etc/fedora-release
I am running "Fedora release 23 (Twenty Three)".
Does that determine $releasever ?

And finally, while I am on the topic,
will /etc/yum.repos.d/ change at some point to /etc/dnf.repos.d/ ?

Exactly. The beta uses updates-testing. You will 
continue to do dnf upgrade and on or slightly before 
release date, an updated repo package will be 
installed. This will disable updates-testing and 
enable updates. The same will happen for rpmfusion-
free (already has) and rpmfusion-nonfree. At this 
point, you will be using f23 and not a testing system. 
If you care to run updates-testing, then you will need 
to enable it.

Upgrading via dnf does not affect your current choice of desktop, as that
is encoded in a file in your home directory.

To make matters easy for the future, you can move the /home dir to
another partition, or better yet to another drive so it is never affected
by fresh installs of your choice of distro onto the boot drive. The boot
drive can have a symlink to the actual partition or drive containing /home.

You should disable it if it is active. You can check it with dnf:

# dnf -v repolist all

If it is active you can disable it with:

# dnf repolist disable fedora-updates-testing.repo

One of the points that bothered me about fedup was that (in my experience) 
there was no Y/N question before going ahead with the actual update (which both 
yum and dnf have before going through with an update, unless explicitly called 
with the -y option). It simply went through the list to download and then went 
on updating/upgrading. 

Is this option there when distro-sync is done using dnf?

I'm using the Mate desktop as well and I have this same problem that 
ctrl-alt-f2 does not go to a virtual console on my laptop keyboard, but 
fn-ctrl-alt-f2 does.  However, I have an external keyboard plugged into 
the system via a KVM switch and on that keyboard ctrl-alt-f2 does take 
me to a virtual console.   At some point in time ctrl-alt-f2 worked on 
my laptop keyboard, but after some update it stopped.  Using 
fn-ctr-alt-f2 requires too many fingers :-).  It may also be the case 
that my external keyboard does not have a fn key and that's why 
ctr-alt-f2 works.

Your description of the history of this dilemma is identical to mine.
I just have no idea what made it stop from doing what it always did.

Tried Fn-Ctrl-Alt F2  (and 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) to no avail.

When I get home I will try the external KB.

Configuring/setup of WiFi card on Dell E6220 Laptop

I've just installed F22 on a Dell E6220 laptop (in anticipations of next 
week's F23 rollout).

A few issues left to squre

I'm trying to setup WiFi (the Ethernet device works correctly, btw).

There is an external switch controlling power to the card, and an 
indicator light. Those show that the item is "on."


lspci -v for the WiFi card reports the following:

In NetworkManager, this is no MAC address shown for a WiFi card when I try

it shows that the module is loaded.

However having googled some on this subject, I see that there are probably 
other modules (and configuration settings) required to make this WiFi card 
operable.


Per suggestions, I have installed kmod-wl, akmod-wl, but I suspect that 
there is something else that needs to be done.
