Little guy -- 2 drives -- bought probably in 2012. Its power brick died and I slapped another one with more amps. I have upgraded its drives at least 2x. It allows me to run NFS, SMB (theoretically; never did), iSCSI, and even act as Time Machine server for my Macs. I can also create and resize logical volumes just fine. And most of this is done from command line. Different from others, I use it only for export fileshares and LUNs. IMHO, a fileserver/NAS/SAN should just do that. I have another box which has no issues mounting shares from it to run docker containers on. Or mounting LUNs to run VMs. If I were to replace it with something more powerful, I would start with FreeNAS and add the drives and network cards. ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org Do not reply to spam on the list, report it: https://pagure.io/fedora-infrastructure

Only has idiot lights on the front so I have to rely on having its logs (plain old syslog since it is Linux based) and SNMP info sent to elk for performance/status info and emails for critical issues like failing drive. I did not put the time to setup an ansible playbook for it yet, so I have to ssh into it to do updates, resize logical volumes, or work on the iscsi partitions. In other words, it is not as feature rich as the competition but then again my needs are few. In fact I never set it up to do cloud backup or serve as DNS, wiki, git server, itunes, ldap server, mail, db server, or whatever (other gimmick) since all I want it to be is a NAS. Ok, it is acting as time machine for my Macs, but that is the only other thing it is doing besides garden-variety NFS and iSCSI. Being a NAS is a full time job; all I ask of it is to do that well. Now, I am not saying you should buy a synology. I just happen to like my little guy. When I do need something better, I will build a freenas box because ZFS. Re: Motherboard recommendations
This is a good discussion for me since I too have been thinking on getting a somewhat modern AMD motherboard. Things I would like is pcie (ideally v4 but can do v3) slots (4+) and memory. The latter requirement made me think on going to ebay and getting a server board as those memory cards are cheaper. Non ECC memory is pricy. CPU, well, other than numa I do not need insane power. I do have an ASRock gaming board that is old but never let me down. I saw a MSI X470 (as a placeholder for this discussion) but even 64GB of non ECC memory is not cheap. ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org

From there you can make pretty graphs (hello, Kibana), create alerts, and then send email alerts. You can run it off a vm if you want or a physical box; memory (think 10GB+) and diskspace is what it likes. Which tools to run on the servers you want to monitor? Go to the url I gave and see what each tool does. You should also be able to ask your network appliances what's up and then feed that to the onionbox; monitoring everything in your servers will make them very unhappy, your network unhappy, and the storage used to store its data unhappy. Start small. If you ever used Splunk, it is the same thing but without the price. Both excel on helping you make question to the collected data about what happened (sometimes WTF is going on if the event is still taking place). Other programs are AIDE or tripwire (they do the same); do check exactly what they do before mindlessly deploying or you will have a lot of people pissed at you. > thanks > > . > . > . > ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org

Adding options to grub
So I want to add a few options to the kernel (say iommu support). I have been told before to avoid using grub2-mkconfig because it would apply the changes to all currently available (to boot from) boot kernels. Instead, I should edit just the latest kernel entry in the grub.cfg file, adding the option to the line starting with linux16. This way, if it went boink, all I had to do is reboot, pick another kernel from the grub menu and off I went. And, it seems that every future kernel upgrade would incorporate this change. Is that accurate or is there a cleaner way to do the same while still leaving me the option to go back to the grub menu? ___ users mailing list -- users@lists.fedoraproject.org To unsubscribe send an email to users-le...@lists.fedoraproject.org Fedora Code of Conduct: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project/code-of-conduct/ List Guidelines: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Mailing_list_guidelines List Archives: https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org
