It sound like starting a flame war between 2 distro :)

The Fedora distribution is made for enthusiastic and curious computer
users that like to learn and experience newer versions of software and
therefore might not suit everyone.

Linus Torvalds, NASA etc are also using Fedora but I think Debian have
more organization and users (https://www.debian.org/users)

Both projects have a large body of collective knowledge from the
community. Debian also claimed have larger repos compare to Fedora.

Debian does not follow a time-based release model but Fedora have.

Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel or the FreeBSD kernel, but
Fedora system only use and driven by Linux kernel.

Check https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/project and
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Is_Fedora_For_Me you might be found
something useful.

p/s : Every distro have they own advantage and disadvantage. The option
is left to you which one to choose as from perspective of end-user,
developer or else. I choose Fedora because it much easier for me to get
involve with OSS community and make it better.

Young people tend to use social media such twitter and facebook but
having forum board would be fun too. It easier to access.

hurm.. https://ask.fedoraproject.org should be sync with stackExchange

It not going to be replace, look at *BSD sites, they also have web
forums but people tend to use IRC, mail list. Always keep the option for
user.

BTW my country blocking IRC ports, there is option to use freenode irc
chat or proxy/vpn.

Having mail list is the best option and now we have forum.. any of thus
are great.

All the best for Fedora. Keep the good work!

Re: OT: how do I download with curl from this web site?

2018-08-19 Thread Robbi Nespu
Oracle keep changing the flow to grab file from they site. I do also
need download some JRE/JDK version while doing my stuff. The easy way
is to curl from mirror. Since i use linux, I just can get from
"osuosl" ftp , e.g  :

curl
http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/funtoo/distfiles/oracle-java/jre-8u144-linux-i586.tar.gz
-O

Take not, It not recommend and do it at your own risk.

for JDK just curl to binarybabel e.g:
curl -s https://lv.binarybabel.org/catalog-api/java/jdk8.json

and you will get the latest curl/wget command to download the package
from oracle.But It does't work for windows binary anyway :d

On my current Fedora 28 workstation, I have gnome-shell 3.28.3 and gjs

updates-testing repository

Architecture: x86_64

$ rpm -qi gjs | head -n4

Can anyone guide me how to get and compile the latest gnome and gjs on
my machine?

Re: problems to install NetBeans 8 on fedora 27

2018-04-20 Thread Robbi Nespu

Hi there, you need JDK 8 from Oracle. Using OpenJDK can crash your
installation process:

Please check:
$ java -version
$ javac -version

make sure it Oracle java, else you can download Netbean that bundle with
JDK here (
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk-netbeans-jsp-142931.html
)

Then for installation, please chmod you installer as executable file first

(If you already hava Oracle JDK and want to use existing installer)
$ chmod a+x ./netbeans-8.2-linux.sh
$ ./netbeans-8.2-linux.sh

(if you use Netbean bundled with JDK)
$ chmod a+x jdk-8u171-nb-8_2-linux-x64.sh
$ ./jdk-8u171-nb-8_2-linux-x64.sh

No need to run installer as root, since I saw you run it as root #

If you interested to have multiple java / jdk, check my old blog post
https://robbinespu.github.io/eng/2018/03/21/Updating_java_with_alternative.html

I hope it help you installing netbeans

Well, I could be you battery is dying. This is mine output which has

present: yes

You might want to check /etc/UPower/UPower.conf file. Either using
UsePercentageForPolicy=true or UsePercentageForPolicy=false

Re: alternative to skype

2018-03-22 Thread Robbi Nespu
You discussion is out of topic. Do thread owner found the alternative? If
yes, stop bump the thread to much with unrelated to main topic.

Furthermore, i tried latest purple pidgin and send / received documents
working perfectly with you skype account.

It also lightweight compare to official skype application.

Give a try!

Re: alternative to skype

2018-03-18 Thread Robbi Nespu
I still use Skype since my contact come from various type of OS on
they machine. So I keep using skype protocol but using pidgin
(skype4pidgin), it very lightweight compare to official skype
software.

Check the project here : https://github.com/EionRobb/skype4pidgin
,Fedora has this package , so just install from our repository

$ sudo dnf install purple-skypeweb pidgin-skypeweb

Sending document seem have some issues, but I don't care much. I can
send via web when needed. If you still care and want self hosted, take
a look on Jitsi project.

Last not least, riot.im and tox.chat also good platform to try

Re: I give up using Fedora ...

2017-09-30 Thread Robbi Nespu
HI there, I know the frustration and people around keep suggesting KVM/qemu
and virtualbox. It like XY solution.
Dont be mad with thus people. They just don't know that some people like
me, need to use specific tools (vmware) for getting job done and don't use
another alternative because I need to get my existing image running.

Maybe some people like me can help you? My last attempt are resulted
failure with kernel module, even I posted here
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/users@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/YY7UPZNUYMJQC37K5D6Y55LX2743I7DB/

I saw, the thread inside VMware official forum about the problems too,
which fault come from VMware it self.

But recently with new update, it worked flawless for VMware Player 14.0.0
build-6661328 and VMware Workstation 14.0.0 build-6661328
Here a tweet about my success achievement
https://twitter.com/RobbiNespu/status/914081821557583872 ,it just few hour
ago.

There is automated tool by hhemied - https://github.com/hhemied/FixVMware
for VMware workstation, plus here some changes if you need for VMplayer
https://github.com/hhemied/FixVMware/issues/1#issuecomment-333295703

Get newer version of VMware (uninstall older version first, reboot, install
new ones, reboot, check new VM working or not) and get new kernel. It
should be work fine for now. If you still having problem, share you details
from terminal output such kernel version, vmware version, journalctl -xe ,
output when run vm via terminal and any useful logs to help you in future.

VMware player with Fedora 26 (kernel module not loaded)

2017-09-02 Thread Robbi Nespu
Hi everyone, anyone found workaround on getting VMware player loaded
without problem ? I saw people posted on VMware community board and the
respond are less, so I try my luck posting here.

$ uname -a
Linux fedora26 4.12.8-300.fc26.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Aug 17 15:30:20 UTC 2017
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I already compiled the vmmon and vmnet library source successfully, copy
both *ko file to /lib/modules//misc, ran depmod -a command
and reboot.

VMware still asking to locate and check GCC, a working workaround is to run
with "/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmplayer " command but when I loaded *vmdk into
VMware then I getting "Please make sure that the kernel module `vmmon’ is
loaded”"

Tried both latest VMplayer 7 and 12. I still gettting the same error. I
only have 2 kernel installed right now

$ rpm -q kernel
kernel-4.11.8-300.fc26.x86_64
kernel-4.12.8-300.fc26.x86_64

Tried with older kernel and still face the same error

Re: F26: in konsole vim shows $q q at startup!

2017-08-31 Thread Robbi Nespu
What version you are using?
mine are worked fine

$ vim -version
VIM - Vi IMproved 8.0 (2016 Sep 12, compiled Aug 22 2017 12:33:17)

Plus, I found some people posted[1] about $q appearance on vim first line
when loaded a few days ago.
If you don't mind, what is your "$ env | grep TERM" output ?

Re: OS for Thinkpad T42??

2017-08-18 Thread Robbi Nespu
I recommend Fedora 26, but need to tweak a lot. Because hardware spec are 5
years behind. If me, i maybe use openbox or i3. Use netinstall for minimal
installation. I saw few post this laptop has kernel issue and unbootable,
where you live? It better find someone new to make a custom kernel for your
usage.
