That's the way autofs works for such an indirect map by default. This
may ne changed: see man auto.master, look for browse.

Try to suppress the ,defaults option in /etc/auto.master

/srv/ /etc/auto.ext-usb --timeout=10

then restart autofs, but that will fail also. See below.

...

This shows that Gnome is still mounting itself the partitions of this
disk (using their labels).

autofs will fail to mount those partitions if they are already
mounted.

Try to find how to setup Gnome to *not* mount them (I have no idea).

Yes and no: it is a mountpoint directory managed exclusively by autofs
(since with ssetup auto.master for that).

This is normal to not be able to create sub-directories under /srv.

Please read carefully what I said earlier:

Note also that "ls /srv" will show nothing, but "ls /srv/BKx_programming"
will do the (auto)mount and show you the content.

And what about:

You are running journalctl as you. Except if your are in the wheel
group (or some other ones) you will not see the system journal.

  What gives the following commands:

sudo journalctl --since 19:57:00 -u autofs.service

ps auxw | grep automount

systemctl cat autofs.service

mount -v | grep /media

mount -v | grep BK

You should also manually umount every BK directories under /media:

   sudo umount /srv/BKx_data-personal
   sudo umount /srv/BKx_programming
   sudo umount /srv/BKx_data-common

This is abnormal. You should see:

systemd[1]: Starting Automounts filesystems on demand...
automount[...]: Starting automounter version .., master map /etc/auto.master
...

> [angelo_dev@localhost ~]$ journalctl --since 19:57:00 -u autofs.service

You are running journalctl as you. Except if your are in the wheel
group (or some other ones) you will not see the system journal.

What gives the following commands:

  sudo journalctl --since 19:57:00 -u autofs.service

  ps auxw | grep automount

  systemctl cat autofs.service

  mount -v | grep /media

  mount -v | grep BK

You should also manually umount every BK directories under /media:

 sudo umount /srv/BKx_data-personal
 sudo umount /srv/BKx_programming
 sudo umount /srv/BKx_data-common

From the article you linked. Perhaps this is the reason you don't see
them from the command line.
"""
Please note, although our drive is now listed as an active mount point
the disk is not mounted yet! autofs only waits for user to access
specified mount point directory and once that happens it will mount the
filesystem.

Example:

$ cd /media/
$ ls
$ cd Iomega
$ ls
lost.dir music picture ps3 video mystuff
$ cd ..
$ ls
Iomega

From the output above you can see that Iomega directory was created
only when I tried to access it. Every time you now plug in you USB
external disk you can instantly access it via some sort of Desktop or

Try doing a cd into the directory, and then doing an ls.

Try to put autofs in verbose mode. In /etc/sysconfig/autofs:

OPTIONS="-v"

then restart autofs.

Gnome (nautilus) is still trying to do the mount, and under /media.

This seems to show that the mounts of /media/BK... are still present
in /etc/fstab.

It it is really the case: umount all the /media/BK... and comment
those mounts in /etc/fstab

Note also that "ls /srv" will show nothing, but "ls /srv/BKx_programming"
will do the (auto)mount and show you the content.

Hi Francis,

I followed your procedure,

I can see the partitions by nautilus as is the standard, but still I cannot
see them from the command line ..:

[angelo_dev@localhost ~]$ ls /srv/BKx_programming
ls: cannot access /srv/BKx_programming: *No such file or directory*

(the output about the service is :)
---
[angelo_dev@localhost ~]$ sudo systemctl status autofs
[sudo] password for angelo_dev:
● autofs.service - Automounts filesystems on demand
   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/autofs.service; enabled)
Active: active (running) since Sun 2018-01-07 17:36:34 IST; 16min ago
  Process: 1202 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/automount $OPTIONS --pid-file
/run/autofs.pid (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
 Main PID: 1220 (automount)
   CGroup: /system.slice/autofs.service
   └─1220 /usr/sbin/automount --pid-file /run/autofs.pid
=

what to say ??

Perhaps the right procedure (in the case of an USB device) is really to use
the node file in /dev directory how is wrote in the article ?

We tried ... In every case thank you very much

Angelo

I read it already.

You mounted (in /etc/fstab) using UUIDs, and that is a good practise.

If you really want to test autofs try the following:

Add in /etc/auto.master:

 cut here --
/srv/ /etc/auto.ext-usb --timeout=10,defaults
 cut here --

And create /etc/auto.ext-usb as:

 cut here --
BKx_data-personal -fstype=ntfs :/dev/disk/by-uuid/376214F24CC07CE0
 cut here --

Then restart autofs.service and check that you see your partition
under /srv/BKx_data-personal/

I reference the partition by its UUID, knowning that the system
creates automatically the /dev/disk/by-uuid/xxx entries.

autofs wants a :/dev/... as location.

I don't think the options ,user,exec,uid=1000 are needed.

Hi Francis,

before to begin, I would like talk with you a moment...

Strangely I had several difficult to try autofs ..

Now I that I went more in depth,I can understand that autofs is made mainly
to be used in a net environment (NFS - file systems used in networks).

The purpose because I wont use autofs is different.. : I wont only to mount
an USB Hard Disk - permanently connected to computer .

The case that I am interested is not so much considered in current
"literature" and so the information
that I collected couldn't be, perhaps, appropriate.. ...
I found only an article that consider explicitly the my case...:
*Automatically mount USB external drive with autofs
-https://linuxconfig.org/automatically-mount-usb-external-drive-with-autofs
*

This article suggest to use the file "node" in the directory /dev as name
for mounting the partitions...
This is another/different way to cope the problem...

If you are interested, give a look to this article, ... perhaps what I did
til now (mounting directories instead i file node in /dev directory) could
be not the right procedure...

 Thank you

If I understand correctly your setup, your USB disk is always attached

I suspect that you have in the /etc/nsswitch.conf file:

  automount: files sss

and then autofs (the automount process) if attempting to find its
auto.master map in /etc (files) then with an sss lookup.

It is not so much material finding for :

and I, also, am not able to understand exactly the meaning of this message.

You are using the UUIDs which is fine: no need thus to configure udev
to have a fixed device name for those partitions.

I suspect that nautilus is in some manner auditing what resides under
/media, and unmounting the partitions when not in use.

Can you try to do your mounts under some other directory (ex: /srv)?

Really, (after many tests) I cannot understand what the problem can be...
I disabled all auto mounting functions putting in comment all the rows of
the file auto.master
and after I checked the service autofs :

what can be the cause ? What can I try still ?

Well, everything else should already be mounted since the system is up
and running when he plugs in the drive, so it will be a no-op for
everything except the USB drive he just plugged in.

I haven't done this, but from the article it seems that you have either
an entry in fstab and use mount -a to mount the drive after plugging it
in, or you follow the udev - autofs route without an entry in fstab.

I think udev is part of the base fedora system, so you will already
have it installed, as part of package systemd-udev.

The recipe in the article doesn't seem that bad. Basically three steps:
identify and specify the drive, let udev know about the drive, set up
autofs to mount the drive.

made on my USB HD - for backing up the data of the computer.

--
*(I am thinking that, perhaps, the names to indicate the "mounting point"

I found an article: (Automatically mount USB external drive with autofs -
https://linuxconfig.org/automatically-mount-usb-external-drive-with-autofs )
There the problem is seriously explained ... (differently than in other
articles there is explicitly considerate the mounting of an *USB HD*).
And there is suggested to use "udev" to create a "USB device base name
permanent" for the device... (and this look to me to be advisable).

But following this procedure the complexity of the problem is growing
exponentially (I need also install udev ?).

So I would like ask some help, before to give up... :-).

What are the correct steps to do the automatically mounting of a HD in
order to use it for backing up data on USB Hard Disk ?

Hi Samuel,

if I use fstab to *mount permanently* some partitions that I made on a USB
Hard Disk, *THEN, every time* I use the "find" command, I get (from
nautilus) requests to open (show) these partitions.

And this is not only an (very much) annoying problem..
In that eventuality I also begin to have problems at the boot ...
I not understand exactly because of this (I can only to think the problem
is connected with the feature) ,
*but for sure*.. the problems completely disappear if I delete the
permanent mounting of partitions with fstab.

*here some line of command* : *sudo journalctl | grep -i
PRTZ_programming* *(PRTZ_programming
= name of partition I made on USB HD)*

computer,

I don't understand this. Can you provide more details about what is
happening here? I wonder if systemd is lazy mounting the drives, so
they don't actually mount until you access them for the first time. If
you look in the journal, you should be able to tell by the timestamps
when the drive gets mounted.

Re: Data backup- (udev problem)

2017-12-30 Thread Angelo Moreschini
thank you Bob,

I wont try your suggestion, but I have not installed autoff on Fedora 21 :
--
[angelo_dev@localhost ~]$ sudo systemctl status autofs.service
[sudo] password for angelo_dev:
● autofs.service
Loaded: not-found (Reason: No such file or directory)
   Active: inactive (dead)
-

So before to do something wrong I would ask you how I can install it (I
didn't find help in this way..)
*It is a autofs repository for Fedora ?*

thank you

Angelo
