2012-04-04 Thread Gregory P. Ennis
Everyone,

Just when I was getting accustomed to gnome3, and liking it, my system
switched to fallback mode automatically. I thought the problem was
something I had done, and when I tried to fix it I only made things much
worse and eventually even broke yum. I decided to start over with a new
install, but I have not been able to fix the problem. Of course it is
easy to blame a kernel update, but I have not seen any other posts that
specifically address this.

This machine is an HP laptop (AMD A4-3300M APU with Radeon(tm) HD
Graphics × 2) with ATI Technologies Inc Device 9648 (prog-if 00 [VGA
controller].

At the time of the fresh install gnome3 would not work, and
automatically dropped back to fail safe mode.

In the manner that I did on the original install I did the following :

#1. Install of akmod-catalyst xorg-x11-drv-catalyst from rpmfusion
#2. Removal of nomodeset from grub2.cfg

gnome-shell has been installed :
Package gnome-shell-3.2.2.1-1.fc16.x86_64 already installed and latest
version

I am still unable to boot to gnome3 without going to failsafe mode; your
help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Greg Ennis

Everyone,

The new kernel just released 3.3.0-8.fc16.x86_64 fixes the problems with
this ATI 9648 controller. I now have gnome3 working on F16. After the
installation of the new kernel my laptop failed to present the login
screen; all that appeared was a black screen, but I could access the
laptop remotely with a terminal interface.

I had to yum remove akmod-catalyst as well and xorg-x11-drv-catalyst.
After these were removed and When I rebooted I was able to get into
gnome3.

Aaron,

Thanks for the reply. I had removed nomodeset from
the /etc/default/grub file. I did generate grub.cfg in the manner you
suggested, but that did not fix the problem for me. I still have it
removed, but the problem did not get fixed until I updated the new
kernel 3.3.0-8.fc16.x86_64, and then yum removed akmod-catalyst and
xorg-x11-drv-catalyst

Thanks to everyone for their help on this.

Ok, but understand I did not upgrade a previous system. I installed a
fresh operating system from a DVD.
So why does the system not run with Gnome 3. F15 installed without
problem in Gnome2.

The CD I created with Fedora-16-x86_64-Live-Desktop.iso did not work.
It booted to the boot screen, then after the process started the screen

I did not think this would work without akmod.catalyst, but it might be

Everyone,

Good News

I took the liberty to download Fedora-17-Alpha-x86_64-Live-Deskt
op.iso, and was able to boot into gnome3. There were several screen
warnings as the 17 LiveCD booted, and it took much longer than I would
have anticipated, but I was able to use gnome3 as the DE. There was the
presence of some screen flickering from time to time, but that was also
present with akmod-catalyst.

It looks to me that Fedora 17 is going to fly with ATI Technologies
Device 9648

In thinking about all of the changes being made in the gui with Fedora I
think it would be good to always download the LiveCD to test the
hardware before you upgrade. I have been fighting this battle with
Fedora 15 and 16. If I had thought of testing my hardware with the
LiveCD of each version, I would have had much less grief, and would have
stayed with Fedora 14.

Interesting... the background image for F17 includes a fireworks
display, that is exactly the way I felt when it worked :)

Did you try starting in compatible mode? If that doesn't work you do
have an issue, but if the Live-CD works I assume that an upgrade broke
the working system (not exactly an unheard of thing).

I never load alternate drivers unless the ones in the distro fail to
work. The state of video since GNOME3 is so fragile that I take what I
can get working. The whole concept of requiring acceleration when the
free drivers don't work is mystery think to me.
