Open office keeps dying.

2012-12-13 Thread Larry

Hi,

My open office keeps dying. It is OpenOffice.org 3.4.1 AOO341m1
build:9593 Rev 1372282

Recently purchased a new laptop - Gateway NV52L06u has an AMD64 dual
core processor A6-4400M. This comes with Windows 7 installed. Currently
trying to transition from windows to ubuntu,And I run OO inside of
windows. After copying all my data files over from the old computer,
down loaded OO. About every second time OO would open one of the .ODT
files it would crash.

Read through the blogs, got a hint about administrator priveleges.
Uninstalled OO, and re-installed another OO. Seemed to work OK for a
bit, but the crashes began again.

At this point, I got some advice from Hagar Deleth and Keith McKenna

Hagar replied with The first step worth a try is to reset the profile:
http://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74t=12426
If no change, try with a brand new file to check if it still occurs or
not. [[ I had already once tried this (and there was a user.old profile,
so I tried again, this time making sure there were no OO in the tray and
no soffice in task manager and no OO programs running. Problem still
came back. And I had loaded a brand new file before. See below for the
results ]]

.. reply to me personally but just to the list at
users@openoffice.apache.org ... [[ got it ]]

Since you are not subscribed to this list you may not see all the
replies to your query.

To subscribe Apache OpenOffice mailing lists go to
http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/mailing-lists.html

For user support you can also use The OpenOffice.org Community Forum
http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/;

Keith suggested If you upgraded from a previous 3.x version ... [[I
did not. it was a new computer and thus a new install]]

Keith also cleared up some confusion with As far as it not asking you
about 32 or 64 bit versions: Currently the windows version is 32 bit
only which will run on either a 32 bit or 64 bit system.

At last crash I had just started the launcher gadget, and opened the
files icon and it crashed. The windows screen is attached as OOnot.
The OOprocess.png shows that soffice.bin, soffice.exe, javaw.exe and
jusched.exe were processes. The OOapp.png shows that two programs(?)
or ??? having to do with open office were not running

Thank you for the assistance,
Larry Gran

In case it does not work for you, it's due to a bug with Java 7 that
requires you to install extra software, as documented in the Release
Notes:
http://www.openoffice.org/development/releases/3.4.1.html#AOO3.4.1ReleaseNotes-KnownIssues

Apache OpenOffice 3.4.0 and 3.4.1 support Java 7, which is the
recommended configuration; but (especially on 64-bit Windows) you might
receive warnings about the Java version being defective. In that case,
download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable
Package.

Maybe it is time for AOO to either code for Java 7 or remove Java
 dependencies altogether.
Keep in mind that AOO is not the only app that uses Java. Mozilla
immediately comes to mind. They will most likely have to change also.
 Girvin Herr

Why does people always feel the need to jump into panic mode inmediately??

Java 6 is old, Java 6 is EOL.
Java 7 is already mature and Java 8 is coming next.

Java is always -to the degree of possibility- backwards compatible. I
have run desktop Java apps which were coded at the time of Java 1.2
aka Java2 release and those run flawlessly.

So, if there is any problem between AOO and Java 7, these issues
should be addressed and bugs fixed, either in AOO code or in the Java
7 / OpenJDK JRE.

Hi, Ariel,

Do I recall correctly that there is an important consideration,
particularly on new machines? AOO (32-bit only) needs the 32-bit Java,
and won't run with the 64-bit Java.

Since the crash issue is not really reproducible, I doubt it would ever make it
to confirmation.

I've personally experienced this problem on both XP and Vista. No pattern found
so far. Weird thing is that it stopped crashing after 5 or 6 crashes in a row.

You remove the LibO ?

I agree with your last paragraph 100%.
AOO will be unusable if they don't upgrade, one way or the other. Libra
Office will be in the same boat, so can't go there either. Next bet is
Google, but I really don't like their interface.

I used the AOO Database portion, but didn't depend on its usefulness, so
/that/ isn't a major loss, for me. I don't trust the Apache Foundation

authoritative effort to notify the group of the issue.
The notification came straight from an Oracle email.

I don't have an answer to why this has not been mentioned in this
  forum. It has now!
And I just went through the pain of creating an Oracle account to gain
access to their archives for the old (Java 6) versions!
  Time to resurrect Blackdown Java?

What about that Free Software Foundation (GNU) Java? I have a Java RE

Russ,
That is encouraging. As soon as I get some time, I will have to try Java7.
I am using Slackware 12.2 (k2.6.27) Linux with LibreOffice 3.5.7.2.
I use Base as a MySQL client. I do not use the LO internal database

the MySQL server from, now, Oracle. Oracle MySQL does provide some
