OpenOffice and HeartBleed

2014-04-15 Thread Jess Stuart
 Howdy!

Thanks for OpenOffice! I've used it for the last year and find it
marvelously useful!

If OpenOffice emulates Microsoft Office fully, OpenOffice has some
encryption functionality. Does the encryption functionality of
OpenOffice rely on OpenSSL? If so, does a patch exist for OpenOffice
to make sure OpenSSL is an exploit free version?

Thanks,

Jess Stuart

The OpenOffice infrastructure, and the program itself, are not affected
by Heartbleed. See http://markmail.org/message/edpxiejm5tjgpp7n for some

Apache Writer converts all WORD files

2014-04-15 Thread Dr Ian Shaw
Hello,
I have downloaded the equivalent of WORD (Apache Writer?) quite sometime ago

Question: If I use a file marked in File with the Apache Writer symbol, and I

The symbol change is an indication that once installed Writer became the
default program to open that type of file. It does not mean the file itself
changed. (Note that the option for Writer to be the default, or not, is
prompted for during installation.)

Yes but...

Yes if the file was saved as a Word type file. The option what file type to
save as is offered when a document is first saved.

If the file was saved as a Writer type file the recipient must either get
the Microsoft software to read the file (a free extension for Word from
Microsoft) or download Apache OpenOffice and use that to read the file.

Note: if the recipient only needs to read but not edit the file Writer has
the ability to create a .pdf. This can be found in the menu at File |
Export as PDF...

Thanks for your comments, Alan.

My problem with tables is evidently so rare that it's not worth pursuing.
It's easy to avoid the issue by sticking with AOO (odt), so it's no
biggie. I'm also using MS Word 2003. The failures occur with any
vanilla table (no cell formula, etc).

Let's just forget my problem; at least for now. Your time is better spent
on my pressing issues.

Thanks again.

 anything useful. Any ideas?

As for save and retrieve, if retrieving in AOO after building in AOO, I
couldn't say. I haven't encountered that problem. My questions for you would
be:
- is it one particular file or every file that has a table in it?
- is it any table or only tables that use a particular feature, eg, cell
borders, bullets within cells, cell formulas

If MS Office won't open the file my first impulse would be to forget about
it until the problem with AOO opening the file is resolved. Once the .doc
file can be built, saved and opened again in AOO then try opening with Word.
I expect it will open once AOO is also able to open it.

fyi - I built a simple test table in AOO 4.0.0 with four rows and four
columns, put values in each cell, autoformated the table using the default
autoformat style and saved it as an MS Word 97/2000/XP (.doc) file. Then
opened it in MS Word 2003. It opened with no problem. In Word I added
another table with the same number of rows and columns, applied one of
Word's auto formats and saved the file again. Then went back to AOO and it
opened no problem.

My version of Word is old (haven't used it routinely for quite a few years
now so haven't gone to the later versions). My lack of problems makes me
think you're encountering a problem with one of the following
- the particular file you're working with
- the MS Word version the file is being saved as
- a feature used in the table design

Each issue must be troubleshot to try and come to a solution.

OpenSSL is used for SSL/TLS, which is a networking protocol, used for

secure access by browsers and has been extended other services such as
secure email access among others.

Those icons changed only on your computer because you have OpenOffice
installed and not Microsoft office. It has no effect on files you share
with others. So, if you save as a Word (.doc) file, it will still
appear as that on another computer where MS Office is installed. On
computers where both are installed, the icon will reflect which is the
default application for that file type.

Not sure from your description what you're trying to do but following may

Select a cell with the background you want. Paste Special - Format

the problem is that the find-and-replace function has its vision limited to
only one paragraph if regular expressions are enabled, and if they are not,
then there is no way to enter the end-of-line character into the 'search for'
box. however, you can merge all your text into one paragraph to lift this
limitation.

just enter '$' to the 'search for' box and '\n' (or something equally
square to mark line breaks) to the 'replace with' box, then perform in turn the
'replace all' and 'find all' operations and hit the 'delete' key on your
keyboard (prepare to wait a couple of minutes here if the document is long
enough; you will not see any progress bar, so the program will confusingly seem
freezed). after that, the find-and-replace's field of vision is no more limited
to one paragraph (well, it is still limited, but that paragraph now contains
all the text), so you may replace three consecutive marks with one and
then replace them back with '\n'.

another way is to install the altsearch extension:

http://extensions.openoffice.org/en/project/alternative-dialog-find-replace-writer-altsearch

one of its features is that searched or replaced text can contain one or more
paragraphs. however, i have never tried it.

the 'format paintbrush' tool on the standard toolbar seems to be what you look
for. just select the cell from which you want to copy background, double-click
the 'format paintbrush' button and start selecting cells or cell ranges to
which you want to copy background colour; press escape when done.

if you have no format paintbrush on the standard toolbar, then go to 'tools -

place a tick against the format paintbrush in the 'commands' list. if it is already

The OpenOffice web infrastructure (main site www.openoffice.org, wiki
and forum) is not and never was vulnerable to Heartbleed. See
http://markmail.org/message/edpxiejm5tjgpp7n ; so I'm curious to know
where you got this information from.

Why, pray tell, isn't this an option under 'Save As'???

Re: Apache Writer converts all WORD files

2014-04-15 Thread japples
Thank you so much, I had wondered why programs (including Open Office)
have export to / print to pdf rather than save to pdf format. PDF
format is more of an Adobe propriety graphic file that edits well with
Adobe Acrobat.

I can't speak for the applications's designers, but it strikes me that
this is very sensible - indeed useful. The various formats available
at Save As are alternative ways in which a document can sensibly be
kept, with the possibility that it will subsequently be reopened and
further edited. Although PDF is an ideal format for transferring
*final versions* of documents between users and platforms, it is quite
unsuited to further editing, of course. Putting PDF in the Save As
menu might give users the impression that saving in that format would
provide the same functionality as saving in one of the normal document
formats - in this case .odt or .doc. Users might save as PDF and lose
the benefit of considerable editing time.

Consider also a user editing a file and then immediately creating a
PDF version. If PDF was an alternative saving format, there would be
no warning that the edits had not been saved if the document were then
closed. Next time the existing .odt file was opened, recent editing
would have been lost (and users would not be pleased). As it is,
exporting to PDF does not affect this protection.

I see this choice as wise.

I trust this helps.

Dyslxic option

2014-04-15 Thread Sarah Wilkes
Hello support

Sarah
I have learned to write after sixty years. With
Windows XP and MS Office Word with speech and spell checker.
I would love to use Open Office but need a voice
reader to aid with understanding the words and flow of the stories I
write.
Is anyone working on open office text writer to add
a speech option (I would love to test it)
Here's how I do the work around of my Dyslxic; I
write the story run spell check and then read the story then have the computer
reads it to me. My reading can't see the errors but with my ears I can hear the
errors.
