Re: E-mail Program

2020-05-08 Thread Alan B
You're welcome.

Some options for a PDF editor include Adobe's PDF editor, Foxitsoftware's
Phantom PDF, and Qoppa's PDF Studio Standard. There's others. These are the
ones I'm most familiar with.

Adobe's product is a subscription. My understanding is that when the
subscription expires the product will no longer work, can't even open the
program. Adobe also sells a perpetual license for their 2017 product. For
the 2017 product all the features work all the time. For myself, I wouldn't
pay full license price for something that's already three years old and
won't get any updates.

Foxitsoftware's Phantom PDF Standard is sold as a perpetual license with
upgrades for one year. Cost is about 90% of a one year subscription for
Adobe Acrobat Standard DC. The difference being, after the year is up, all
features continue to work.

Qoppa's PDF Studio Standard is sold as a perpetual license with upgrades
for one year. If a new release comes out within a certain time after your
purchase, nine months I think, you're entitled to the new release, so an
upgrade may become available during the license term, not just updates.
It's about 60% of the cost of Adobe's one year subscription. I've used
Qoppa on Linux for years and generally purchase a new license about every
third year. It's met all my advanced PDF needs nicely. I've never used the
Windows version. The license may be used on two devices.

No open source PDF editors that I am aware of.

Regarding this particular question it is important to understand the
requirement. Many people I have supported have asked for a PDF editor.
Getting them to define what they actually want to do often determines that
the features of Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader, among others, will
meet their requirements.

If the requirements include changing text (adding, removing, reflowing) in
an existing PDF, controlling how others can use the document (prohibit
select and copy text, open to a certain page, prevent modification, etc)
then yes, a PDF editor would be required.

If the requirements include highlighting, marking out, underscoring
existing text, applying a digital signature, adding comments, then Adobe
Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader both will meet the requirements. If the
requirement is to create a PDF document then OpenOffice programs can be
used to do that along with other methods, e.g. Foxit Reader includes a PDF
"printer". Select it as the target printer and instead of a page coming out
of your physical printer, a PDF document is created.

You're welcome, Sasha.

Some additional information for you to consider.

Yes, some are simply profiting without contributing. However some people
have limited / no online access. Sellers that provide physical media,
DVD/USB, are providing a worthwhile service for them.

The other point, OpenOffice is "open source software". Not "freeware".
There are distinctions. Most often, freeware comes with other unwanted or
unneeded software that continually requests the user to upgrade to paid
version or to buy some additional product. A nag that is not helpful and,
if the nag is followed, can lead to undesirable problems on the pc.

When you search for software I suggest including the phrase "open source",
with the quotes, in your search. You will find many useful programs
provided in the same manner as OpenOffice.

e.g.
Audacity - sound file editing
GIMP, Krita - image editing and creation
OpenShot - video editing
Thunderbird - email
Calibre - ebook library and management
Gramps - geanalogical research software
etc.

Re: E-mail Program

2020-05-05 Thread Alan B
You're welcome, Sasha.

Some additional information for you to consider.

Yes, some are simply profiting without contributing. However some people
have limited / no online access. Sellers that provide physical media,
DVD/USB, are providing a worthwhile service for them.

The other point, OpenOffice is "open source software". Not "freeware".
There are distinctions. Most often, freeware comes with other unwanted or
unneeded software that continually requests the user to upgrade to paid
version or to buy some additional product. A nag that is not helpful and,
if the nag is followed, can lead to undesirable problems on the pc.

When you search for software I suggest including the phrase "open source",
with the quotes, in your search. You will find many useful programs
provided in the same manner as OpenOffice.

e.g.
Audacity - sound file editing
GIMP, Krita - image editing and creation
OpenShot - video editing
Thunderbird - email
Calibre - ebook library and management
Gramps - geanalogical research software
etc.

No registration required.
Return to the page as often as you like to check for a new version.

Sasha, OO is free for anyone to down load.
No, there is no email client for a Office program.
You can use Outlook or Thunderbird, etc.

Install the app, such as Thunderbird. Then, ensure it's the default app
in Windows. It should then be automatically selected when you try to
email a document.

Compose your email in your mail client and select "attach", this should offer
you the File Manager dialogue box, select whatever it is you wish to attach and
away you go.

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I did not make myself clear, I know there is no
e-mail app etc, I have two e-mail programs either one of which I would like to
use to send an OpenOffice document. What I need is the instruction on how to
make that happen. The OpenOffice site offers no help. Thanks PG

There is no email app for OpenOffice. You use whatever email app is
installed on your computer. Many people use Thunderbird.

When you have an email app installed, you can use it to send documents.

I've never used Mail. On my W10 virtual machine, I have Thunderbird and
when I email a document from OO, Thunderbird automagically opens a
compose window.
