Re: Lynn Brubaker, how to unsubscribe
John, I'm one of the moderators of this list and I have been unsubscribing a couple of subscribers like Lynn in recent months. I don't share your POV regarding the size of the issue, it just happened twice this week but it doesn't happen every week. Anyway, one theory that we have already been discussing many years ago within the old OOo community is that these kinds of users enter a subscription with a fraudulent provider of OpenOffice that offer them 'support' and managing somehow to get these users subscribed to our mailing list. I have been trying to confirm this theory with some persons I had unsubscribed in the past but they were never willing to discuss so far. So, what should I do? Hi Vincent, you are writing to the users mailing list of Apache OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/) which has nothing to do with QuickOffice Pro. Apache OpenOffice is free software produced by a community of volunteers for the public good, while it seems QuickOffice Pro is fraud provided as an app at Apple's iOS app store. The makers of QuickOffice Pro are misusing the email address of our users mailing list as contact apparently to redirect complaints away from the iOS app store to gain time. Please complain with Apple to help that this unpleasant situation is coming to an end soon. The confusing thing is that they call it Professional Open Office Suite, Professional Office Suite, Open Office Suite, and Open Office Suite 4.1.1. The only issue that I see is that those guys are using the term Professional Open Office Suite with the description of thus Ebay auction [1] because their shouldn't be any additions such as Professional to the brand name. Everything else seems to be OK. The copyright attribution seems to be appropriate. They even pointing out how AOO can be downloaded from the Internet. /Peter [1] http://www.ebay.com/itm/251723894087 Between that, and the disclosures at the bottom of the page, the implication is that it is either Apache Open Office 4.1.1, or a very close derivative of it. It is an ad for a Microsoft Office Suite. Further down on the page it states: «You will receive Open Office Suite on CD delivered by USPS First Class mail. ... All software programs on this CD-ROM are Open Source. The distribution of this software is allowed under the GNU LGPL.» That pretty much assures one that it is not Microsoft Office. Going down to the disclaimers, the implication is that what is being offered is Apache Open Office, even though the stated license (GNU LGPL) does not match the current license. You should never have to buy Open Office. There are circumstances under which purchasing Open Office is a rational decision. To address the original poster's question, purchase of the CD is a reasonable action: * Data transfer limits; * Low throughput speeds; * Dirty network connections; * Installation on a computer that has no network connection, and SneakerNet is not a viable option; jonathon * English - detected * English * English javascript:void(0); - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org
