Couple of things to watch for, first of all, you can NEVER over-write
the standard library. I mention this in this document
(http://www.pitonyak.org/OOME_3_0.odt) that I lack the time to finish
from my published book.

So, if you desire to copy the Standard library, you must manually copy
the data, but, I will not bother to discuss that for now.

Ignoring the standard library, you should be able to do the following:

use Tools Macros Organize Dialogs then select the Libraries tab

The drop down location must read My Macros Dialogs

Select Import

Select the document containing the macro

Select the libraries that you desire to import. Do NOT try to import
the Standard library

If desired, you may choose to replace any existing library. If you do
not, it should not over-write an existing library, but I have not
verified this.

Thanks Andrew, that gets me closer. Unfortunately, the macro I am
trying to import is called Module1 and is the only macro in the
Standard folder. The import does not drop down deep enough into the
standard's internals to chose the desired macro.

I wish there were an add-on that did a descent job of managing macros.

Thanks again for your time and thoughtful answer.

Module 1 is in the Standard library so you CANNOT import it directly.
You must use the IDE to manually copy the code to the clipboard and then
paste it into a new module.

You can import libraries, not modules.

Go to www.openoffice.org on your MAC. Click I want to download
OpenOffice.org. A box opens below what you just clicked. Click anywhere
in the box begin the downloading process. You will be taken to another
page and then the download window opens. You will be downloading a .dmg
file. Double click it to install it. A window opens with three folders
and the OOo.app file. Drag this file to the Applications folder in this
window to install the program. Icon also appear labeled OpenOffice.org
on the desktop. When you are finished installing the program, drag the
icon to the Trash to eject it.

First off, what version of OpenOffice.org did you get, and where? Although there are sometimes
formatting differences between MS Office and OOo (due to the proprietary nature of most MS formats),
these are generally minor. What file extensions are causing you problems -- .doc, .docx, ...? What
kinds of issues do you have?

Unfortunately, if you are using a recent version of OOo (I believe 3.2.1 is the current one) and
having significant trouble, you'll have to use either MS Office (or the relevant application from
it, like Word) or one of the free viewers that MS provides. You might then be able to copy and paste
into an OOo document, perhaps with formatting elements already in place, to get an equivalent document.

What you've encountered is that OpenOffice.org uses a different scripting language, not Microsoft's
Visual Basic, for macros. This can't properly be called a bug, it was a considered design decision
-- whether for legal purposes or something else, maybe somebody else on the list will discuss the
rationale.

As to what you can do, I think you'll either need to translate the macros into the OOo format, or
continue using Excel. I'm including a quote here from the OpenOffice.org Migration Guide:

Macros written in VBA for Excel do not work in Calc and macros written in
StarBasic for
Calc do not run on Excel. Re-writing of macros is required when moving
spreadsheets
between either application.

It sounds as if you have actually downloaded the file, but execution is reported as failing -- is
that right? If so, the problem may actually be with your firewall/antivirus program. The first thing
to try is checking the md5sum of the downloaded file against the one documented for the specific
version on the www.openoffice.org website. The following link should help:

www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/using_md5sums.html

If the md5sums match, you have a good download. To perform the installation,
try the following:

  1. Disconnect completely from the internet.
  2. Disable your firewall and AV.
  3. Double-click on the downloaded file; you should get an installer that
steps you through the
 process as needed.
  4. When the installation is complete, re-enable your firewall and AV.
  5. Reconnect to the internet.

If there is no match, you'll need to download again. Be sure to use the www.openoffice.org website,
or an official mirror; there are some other sites, some of which are not especially noted for integrity.

From the appearance of the error box I conclude you are
running some version of Windows. Please tell us about your
system. This may help the wiser heads to better help you.

I'm running XP SP3 fully up to date, Sempron 2800 1.6 GHz, 1
GB RAM, 333 MHz back plane.

I got this error for a while, both when opening a document
and opening a new document from the quick start in the
System Tray. It didn't seem to cause a problem with any of
OO.o functionality I was using.

A repair install didn't fix it, but after several weeks
the error stopped occurring. I just checked, I'm not getting
that now from opening a new or an old document.

Anyone have a clue what is causing Tony's problem?

David

If you go to the directory specified (C:\Documents and Settings\Tony
Layland\Application Data\OpenOffice.org\3\user\basic\Standard), OOo is
trying to load a file named script.xlb. I assume that this file either
contains an error or it does not exist and it is referenced someplace.

The corrective action depends on which as well as what other macros
and/or you may have. For example, if you have no settings, you can
delete (or rename) the entire 3 data directory (but then you lose all of
your personal stuff such as macros you created. You can try to correct
the error in the script.xlb file if it does exist. If the file does not
exist, you could try to create one containing this:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
!DOCTYPE library:library PUBLIC -//OpenOffice.org//DTD OfficeDocument
1.0//EN library.dtd
library:library xmlns:library=http://openoffice.org/2000/library;
library:name=Standard library:readonly=false
library:passwordprotected=false

/library:library

or, perhaps this

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
!DOCTYPE library:library PUBLIC -//OpenOffice.org//DTD OfficeDocument
1.0//EN library.dtd
library:library xmlns:library=http://openoffice.org/2000/library;
