[users] Re: Status of OpenOffice.org Preservation/Migration with Apache

2011-09-04 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
Rob Weir has added some useful information on this topic at another list:
http://openoffice.org/projects/www/lists/discuss/archive/2011-09/message/6.

Kay Schenk is developing a nice provisional set of migration recommendations
that promises to enrich the next level of detail. The Apache OO.o Community
Wiki page to watch and contribute to is at

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/OOo-to-ASF-site-recommendation.

This is a pubic wiki (registration required of course) and more contributions
and discussion are welcome.

The left sidebar provides an expandable list of related pages as well.

[ ... ]

GENERAL PRESERVATION/MIGRATION OF @OO.o

 3. It is not definite what will happen with @OO.o in the future, although the
Apache Software Foundation is being given possession of the OO.o domain names.
The extent to which the form and content of an operating @Oo.o site will be
preserved and adjusted to tie to development @i.a.o is not worked out.
Further migration beyond any initial cut-over is also to-be-determined.

 4. Although preservation and gradual migration of static content is
technically straightforward, there is more difficulty with dynamic and
interactive services: wikis, issue trackers, forums, mailing lists and their
archive interfaces, mail forwarding and registrations, administrative
functions, and more I probably have missed.

After all, posting such an annoucement on this list (and cross-posting
t-...@incubator.apache.org ooo-us...@incubator.apache.org)
without sticking around to answer questions, explain, offer further
details, is IMO pretty rude. Is this what can be expected from
ooo-apache in the future?

I wouldn't judge Apache by Rob Weir's actions. He is new to Apache and an
IBM employee. The long time Apache people seem to be much more relaxed and
easy going, at least from what I have seen since the Apache-ooo started.

Larry, if you wanted to be useful you might have mentioned to NoOpthat
we have been discussing enabling Gmane for
ooo-users.incubator.apache.org on the ooo-dev list, and that you
yourself have volunteered to set that up in a few days.

And btw, I've been an Apache Committer since 1999.

However...

You post an annoucement on this list (over 5 hours ago) that this list
will be shutting down - not a trivial post. I post questions regarding
such about 2 hours later, and your only post since then is to chastise
Larry?

Maybe part of the confusion here is that some posts seem to be taking a
while to get through?

Yesterday I was wondering what this was all about - all I'd seen was
some discussion about an announcement of this list closing, often
quoting other messages I hadn't seen. The first I'd seen of Rob's
original announcement was your quote below.

Today, the Rob's announcement came through along with about 25 other
replies. One of those was your questions from 2 hours later - which I
hadn't received until now (more than 24 hours after posting). Perhaps
Rob hadn't received your original questions either?

...

You pop in annoucing:

Please note that, as part of the overall migration to Apache, this
list will be closed. Based on feedback received, including from
participants on this list, we've decided to create a users list at the
Apache OpenOffice.org project to serve as a continuation of
users@openoffice.org.

You are invited to subscribe to the new list by sending an email to:
ooo-users-subscr...@incubator.apache.org

That Apache list is live now. Although users@openoffice.org is not
going to disappear immediately, it will eventually be shut down.So
you might want to finish the threads you are engaged in here, but try
to start new ones at ooo-us...@incubator.apache.org. We're talking
weeks, not months, before the migration completes.

Thanks!

-Rob

and don't respond to responses regarding your post (except to Larry's of
course). Again: Is this what can be expected from
ooo-apache in the future?. Many users on this list may not even have a
clue as to what 'incubator.apache.org' is, who /you/ are, and why this
is all taking place.

The users on this list went through several months of trauma regarding
the transition from Sun to Oracle list changes (including bug
reporting). Now you show up with this?

To be honest, I don't see why Apache can't continue using the existing
infrastructure on openoffice.org? incubator.apache.org sounds, to me,
like something which is in the early stages of development - which OOo
certainly isn't! I know the page at
http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/ explains otherwise, but if I
were not already familiar with OOo I probably wouldn't even have read
that far.

That page also states that Incubation is required of all newly accepted
projects until a further review indicates that the infrastructure,
communications, and decision making process have stabilized in a manner
consistent with other successful ASF projects.

Does this mean the infrastructure, mailing list addresses, etc. are
going to change *again* once they have stabilized? If that's the case,
why not use the existing infrastructure at openoffice.org until Apache
are ready to roll out whatever new infrastructure they want to put in place?

You can read more about Apache Incubation here:

http://incubator.apache.org/

All projects that go through Incubation at Apache are already
established open source projects. Incubation is not a place to start
a new codebase. Apache Labs is where brand new ideas can start.

So the point of Incubation for OOo is not that OOo is new, but that it
is new to Apache and needs some extra attention to conform to the
Apache license, integrate with Apache infrastructure and understand
how Apache projects are run.

I can't really answer your cosmic why? question. We must take it as
a given fact that Oracle has contributed OOo to Apache and that Oracle
will be shutting down their hosting of the website. Once those facts
are acknowledged -- even if you disagree with those decisions or how
they were made -- the rest of this, including Apache Incubation and
list migration, follows naturally.

That page also states that Incubation is required of all newly accepted
projects until a further review indicates that the infrastructure,
communications, and decision making process have stabilized in a manner
consistent with other successful ASF projects.

Does this mean the infrastructure, mailing list addresses, etc. are going to

the existing infrastructure at openoffice.org until Apache are ready to roll
out whatever new infrastructure they want to put in place?

Once a project graduates from Incubation it becomes a top level
project or TLP. At that point the mailing lists will change again,
e.g. ooo-users@incubator.apache,org would become
us...@openoffice.apache.org. We can probably make that transition
easy for subscribers, since it will be still within the same list
infrastructure.

2011-09-04 Thread Irv [K3IRV] McWherter
Hello Doug:

The answer to the date problem can be solved in two ways.

My particular problem was in the spreadsheet program The software has the
ability to accept different date formats other than those that appear in the
drop down menu. The following can be applied to a single cell, or to a
group of highlighted cells.

1. Click on cell, or highlighted group of cells.
2. Click on Format.
3. Click on date under Category.
4. Go to bottom of window and there is window with a title Format Code.
Highlight over whatever is there and type in the format needed DD/MM/YY
and then hit OK at the bottom of the page and it worked.

Wheww!

Thanks for all the help and interest with my problem.

to start new ones at ooo-us...@incubator.apache.org. We're talking
weeks, not months, before the migration completes.

Thanks!

A pointer to where in the gmane structure the new list will be would be greatly appreciated.
I dislike mailing lists with a purple passion an much prefer following this through the nntp
interface.

I expect it will be gmane.comp.apache.incubator.ooo.unknown name

The mailing list of the ooo incubator project ooo-...@incubator.apache.org is
carried on Gmane at
gmane.comp.apache.incubator.ooo.devel

@all
Christian asked if it is possible to have a negative time (remaining
time until you've reached your 40 hours/week) in a different color.
If anyone has an idea, please reply, since I can't help.

I also advised him to send his question to the Germanspeaking list.

[users] Re: can I convert word files??

2011-09-04 Thread Martin du Saire
Not sure about table and calendar formats from Word to OO, but if you
couldn't open them directly in OO, go back to Word and save a copy As one of
the compatibility modes (basically anything other than the default Word
format, like an older version of Word); you may even have the option to save
in as .odt. You may loose some of the formatting of the original document,
but hopefully most of it will translate correctly. For a nice, but somewhat
outdated migration overview see:

recrreate these files in open office. Do I have to do this?

For reasons that I cannot explain, some messages were delayed in going to the
e-mail. I received this one and a couple of others two days later than I saw
them on the archive of the list.

This happens. It was apparently a routing or email-queue kick-off quirk where
these messages arrive so much later than the one before and ones after.

Unless it continues, there is probably nothing to be concerned about.

Posts from unsubscribed addresses have to go through the moderator and their is a delay getting
them to the list. Rob Weir's post from his Apache address and David Lipman's post both went
through the moderator and have a later date in the headers for posting to the list than the
actual sent date.

X-Sympa-To: users@openoffice.org in the headers indicate that the post went
through the moderator.
