[Users] Multiple Logical Networks on same physical nic

2012-06-14 Thread Ricardo Esteves
Hi,

How can i set for example 2 Logical Network to use the same physical nic?

Example:

Logical Networks: LAN1 (vlan 1), LAN2 (vlan 2), iSCSI1 (vlan 11), iSCSI2
(vlan 12)

Physical nics on host: eth0, eth1

Attach LAN1 and LAN2 to eth0

Attach iSCSI1 and iSCSI2 to eth1

How can I accomplish this?

Best regards,

Ricardo Esteves.

Re: [Users] Logical Netowrk - ovirtmgmt

2012-06-14 Thread Robert Middleswarth
I just looked at this time it doesn't look like you can detach the
logical network to redefine it as a logic network. With that said. I
am willing to bet that if you were to manually define the network before
setting up the engine it would likely work. It also looks like if you
went and shutdown everything edit the networks manually and defined it
to a vlan that would work as well. The key is to have the ovirt
shutdown well making the change.

Thanks
Robert

No, you choose storage type when defining the data center, and host
can be only in 1 DC at a given time

What if I have a bunch of NFS storage systems and what to move to iScsi?
Does that mean I have to move everything over in one fell swoop?
Having to choose either NFS or iSCSI for the entire datacenter seems
awfully restrictive.

in addition to dafna's suggestions for this.
allowing to use multiple storage types from same clusters/DC is on the

How many attendees? How did the Q&A periods go? Would we like to prepare
a post-event attendee survey? (I recommend we do the survey and can

I think we should prepare the survey in advance of the next workshop and
ask people to fill it out during the workshop, rather than coming back a
couple weeks after the fact.

I have an attendee list from the Linux Foundation for each workshop, so
if we'd like to get the survey out this week it can happen. I believe I
can also find a resource to translate the survey into Japanese, though
that would mean a delay in sending it out.

Some suggested questions, I'd pare down to no more than 5.
- What was your favorite talk?
- What could we do to improve?
- Were the talks too long? Too short?
- Was the presentation material clear to you?
- Are you currently using or interested in using oVirt?
- Are you interested in contributing to the oVirt community?

Cheers,
LH

If you think it's worth it, then go for it. Feedback is always good.

I definitely think it's worth it and the Linux Foundation has graciously
agreed to include our questions in their post-event attendee survey.
Here are the questions we've asked, along with a request to the LF to
help us word the text in such a way that it is clear to attendees who do
not speak English as their first language:

oVirt:
Did you attend the oVirt workshop?
If yes:
1) What talk(s) were most useful to you?
2) What can we do to improve the workshop?
3) Was the presentation material clear to you?
4) Are you or your organization currently using or interested in using
oVirt?

5) Would you like to contribute to the oVirt community?

I will collate the feedback from the survey and share it with everyone
once it is collected.

Cheers,

Some other people is reporting this same problem in #ovirt. Can you
check what is the value of the virt_use_nfs boolean in your hypervisor:

getsebool virt_use_nfs

If it is "off" it is wrong, you will have to change it to "on":

setsebool -P virt_use_nfs on

The problem that you are having with the encoding should not happen, but
you may try the following maven option to workaround it:

mvn -Dproject.build.sourceEncoding=ISO-8859-1 ...

Re: [Users] Following Up on LinuxCon Japan Workshop

2012-06-14 Thread Barak Azulay

Hi Leslie,

Hello everyone,

I'd like to collect feedback from everyone on last week's oVirt workshop
at LinuxCon Japan. [0] Please reply back with comments by close of
business this Friday, 15 June.

Once we have gathered feedback on list, I'll capture it on the oVirt
wiki. We can then use what we've learned to help construct the agenda
and other plans for other upcoming oVirt workshops at LinuxCons. [1]

If you know that you would like to volunteer as an instructor for future
workshops or would like to suggest alternate content for the workshop,
please include that in your feedback.

- Course Material
What sessions were most well received? Which ones require improvement?
Any additional sessions we'd suggest?

All of the sessions seemed to be well received. I don't know that any
need blatant improvement, though they could probably all take a bit of
slide updates. The ovirt-node presentation was especially out of date
(my fault) with it's screenshots.

I would like to add:
- a demo is a must in a workshop, as it is the most effective and
  impressive way to attract people.
- I think the ovirt-engine presentation needs a bit more meat
- I would also add vertical presentations:
* ovirt network
* ovirt storage
* ovirt vm life cycle
Of course all the above should be presented after the arch & demo
  presentation

- Audience Participation
How many attendees? How did the Q&A periods go? Would we like to prepare
a post-event attendee survey? (I recommend we do the survey and can
prepare some questions for the group if that's useful.)

There were probably between 25-35 people through the course of the day
for all the presentations.

I gave also an intro/arch talk also in the virt mini-summit, I actually
gave 2.

I volunteered to cover for one of the presenters that surprisingly
didn't show up on time, because of the confusion this session was rather
small (~40)

In the second one (in my scheduled slot), there were about ~80.

There wasn't really a lot of time set aside for Q&A aside from a few
minutes at the end of each presentation and the breaks in between
presentations. During those times, there generally were people asking
questions.

Actually I wasn't expecting too many questions due to the different
culture of the audience, but we did get questions and people showed
interest.
Most of the interesting questions came during the breaks, and I had a
few white-board sessions with those people.

I think we should prepare the survey in advance of the next workshop and
ask people to fill it out during the workshop, rather than coming back a
couple weeks after the fact. We didn't really collect names of the
people in attendance and I expect that a fair number of people
registered attended the Gluster Conference.

The linux foundation scanned all the participants tags, so I guess they
can supply the names.

- Developer/user traction resulting from engaging at workshop
Did this workshop help us to gain new developers or users? Reinforce
relationships with existing community members?

Only time will really tell here. People definitely seemed interested
and there were a couple people already downloading and installing the
bits during the workshop. I got the impression that most of the people
there were more corporate focused -- Hitachi and Fujitsu were both well
represented. They're from companies that have previously expressed
interest in the project.

Hard to tell,
I had a feeling that there was also a none developers group that came
also to learn about ovirt, more of the consultant type that actually
considering ovirt as an option.

- Promotion of the event, both before and after
What could be done to more effectively promote the event prior to the
workshops? Videos and slides from the workshop should be posted on the
LC Japan site tomorrow; what action would the community like to take to
promote this content?

Not really my area of expertise -- promoting. Probably better to get
information out there earlier that the workshop is happening. It seemed
to be a bit of a fire drill getting things together for this workshop
since it was only about a month before that we decided to run it.
Future workshops shouldn't be as big a deal.

I would say we need a lot of promotion, I was actually accessed by a few
people after the into presentation, saying they had no idea that ovirt
is so mature and feature reach.

This message should be conveyed before the workshop.

Probably an email announcement to users@ with a link to the
presentations/videos is the right next step.

- A/V and Room Set up
Did the seating arrangements work well for the workshop format? Did the
A/V work well, including the videotaping process?

Our room was setup with 5 round tables seating 10 people each. I'm not
sure that it was really the right layout. I expected either rows of

Dear Yaniv Kaul,

Thanks for your propmt anwer.
It seems that your patience did not allow your reading to continue
after "CPU_TYPE_INCOMPATIBLE_WITH_CLUSTER".

That sounds a little rude to me, maybe that's not the way you intended it.

Looking at the flags it looks like you are missing NX[1] this might be disabled
in the bios, or perhaps not supported in the bios ?

[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NX_bit

and you are supposed to have a detailed event in events subtab of the
host with an explanation on why it wasn't added to the cluster
(specifically on a missing nx flag)

As reported in the last part of my previous mail, the output from
vdsClient shows us that the processor is recognised as none of AMD
Opteron G1, G2 or G3 (cpuFlags=...) . Thus, Quad-core AMD 2384 cannot
match any of Ovirt CPU type options. For confriming, I have just
tried, upon reciept of your reply, to add the host to cluster of
other
CPU types (G1, G2 ..) , to get the same unfortunate result.

For your comparaison, here-below shows the "cpuFlags" reported for
an
AMD Opteron 4284, which Ovirt can treat as either of AMD Opteron

No, you choose storage type when defining the data center, and host can be
only in 1 DC at a given time

What if I have a bunch of NFS storage systems and what to move to iScsi?
Does that mean I have to move everything over in one fell swoop?
Having to choose either NFS or iSCSI for the entire datacenter seems
awfully restrictive.

in addition to dafna's suggestions for this.
allowing to use multiple storage types from same clusters/DC is on the

[Users] Ovirt does'nt recognize "Quad-core AMD Opteron" as Opteron

2012-06-14 Thread Hideo GOTO
Dear sirs,

We added a HP DL365-G5 server with 2 x "Quad-core AMD Opteron 2384" to
a working ovirt-node cluster ( CPU type of the cluster = "AMD Opteron
G3". Existing node servers use AMD Opteron 4284) . Then, the
Ovirt-engine refuses to intergrate DL365-G5, reporting an error of the
type: "CPU_TYPE_INCOMPATIBLE_WITH_CLUSTER".

Ovirt (RHEV) does'nt support AMD Opteron 2xxx series , though they are
KVM compatible? (This HP DL365 worked fine with VMWare).

Any solution, advise, comment is wellcome, since we do not much want
to revirt to VMWare.

FIY, On the ovirt-engine's node information, "CPU Name" is reported as
[N/A] and "CPU Type" as "Quad-Core AMD"

Here below is the content of the /proc/cpuinfo on the HP DL365-G5:

When defining the networks in the data center level, state their vlan
tags. Add the networks to your cluster. Then, when you add a host to the
cluster, state which nic is used for each of them.

ovirt supports multiple vlans over a single (or bonded) nic.

The problem is deep in the boot process.
But we've already got a bug entry for that problem:

you can create more than one Data Center.
one can be iSCSI and one can be NFS.
moving the hosts and VM's can be done gradually to the new Data center
or you can choose to run some on one Data Center and some of the other.

What if I have a bunch of NFS storage systems and what to move to iScsi?
Does that mean I have to move everything over in one fell swoop?
Having to choose either NFS or iSCSI for the entire datacenter seems
awfully restrictive.

SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="d4:85:64:48:42:c0", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*",
NAME="eth0"

SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="d4:85:64:48:42:c4", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*",
NAME="eth1"

SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="1c:c1:de:7b:71:30", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*",
NAME="eth2"

SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", DRIVERS=="?*",
ATTR{address}=="1c:c1:de:7b:71:32", ATTR{type}=="1", KERNEL=="eth*",
NAME="eth3"

Made it persistent using the command persist, after the reboot now the
file is still there but the order of the nics still changes :(

Where does this happen? On oVirt Node or somewhere else?

If it's Node then the appropriate file has to be persisted to survive a
reboot. (persist MYFILE)

[Users] Multiple Logical Networks on same physical nic

2012-06-14 Thread Ricardo Esteves

Hi,

How can i set for example 2 Logical Network to use the same physical
nic?

Example:

Logical Networks: LAN1 (vlan 1), LAN2 (vlan 2), iSCSI1 (vlan 11),
iSCSI2 (vlan 12)
Physical nics on host: eth0, eth1

Attach LAN1 and LAN2 to eth0
Attach iSCSI1 and iSCSI2 to eth1

How can I accomplish this?

Best regards,
Ricardo Esteves.

yes, sorry, my mistake :)
it will create RAW disk type which will always take longer

longer than what? it's not related to NFS.
creating a template requires to copy all relevant blocks, same as for
other storage types.

2012-06-14 Thread Ricardo Esteves
Hi,

Every time i reboot my servers, my network interfaces change order and i
have to apply network configuration again.

Anyway to make the order of the nics persistent? I added a udev rule but
when I reboot it disappears.

Best regards,

Ricardo Esteves.

how many spindles does the NFS has?
what's your bandwidth to it?

My guess - 100Mbps link to the storage.
Y.

30 minutes sounds a bit slow to me, but depends on the network and
storage as well

what do you see from i/o behavior on the SPM?
on network utilization?

Re: [Users] Following Up on LinuxCon Japan Workshop

2012-06-14 Thread Leslie Hawthorn

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your detailed feedback.

On 06/13/2012 04:41 PM, Mike Burns wrote:

- Audience Participation
How many attendees? How did the Q&A periods go? Would we like to prepare
a post-event attendee survey? (I recommend we do the survey and can
prepare some questions for the group if that's useful.)

Cheers,
LH
