Re: [Users] Ovirt-engine

2013-09-20 Thread kumar shantanu
Hi Rene,

Thanks for your reply. My hypervisor is kvm which is already running on
Centos6. Now I understand the fact that I can't simply connect kvm with
ovrit-engine rather I will need to import machines from kvm to ovirt-engine
but my hypervisor will still be kvm ? Am I right ?

On a different node what is the role of vdsm ?

Thanks
Shantanu

 Your hypervisor must be CentOS 6 or Fedora 18/19 in order to be able to
 manage it with oVirt (other Linux distributions are still a wip).

 As oVirt has a totally different concept as virt-manager you have to
 import your machines into oVirt. As Markus already wrote this can be
 done using virt-v2v.

  Hello,

  welcome to the list. ovirt uses a central management server
  (ovirt-engine) that
  manages the machine definition in a database. It controls VMs
  on several hypervisor
  hosts with this information. To get a VM into the database you
  have to import
  it. virt-v2v helps me for VMWare sources and it should do the
  trick for you. Find
  more info in chapter A.1.2.4 of this page:

 Hey Jorick,

 thanks for the informations from this and your last e-mail.
 I think we need some deeper debugging, could you please do the following
 to get more debugging informations:
 1. Boot the ISO as usual
 2. When the installer TUI comes up, press F and drop to a shell
 3. Set a password for root
 4. Now run: ovirt-node-installer --debug
This will run the installer in debug mode (writing tons of infos
 to /var/log/ovirt-node.debug.log).
 5. Continue the installation as usual until you reach a problem, then:

 6. Switch to a second console and login (the setup tui should come up)
 7. Drop to shell by pressing F2
 8. Please send the files
 * /var/log/ovirt-node.debug.log
 * /var/log/ovirt.log
 * /tmp/ovirt.log (if available)

 That would really help us to find out what the problem is.

 I think we should also open a bug for this.

   As the Local disk first only reported 1GB, i used Other device /dev/sda

   When using Local disk, I get a 'Read-only file system' error.
   (xxx_145.png)

   This is on two identical nodes with a SSD connected through LSI MegaRAID.
   I could try it without RAID, but I'll have to visit the datacenter and
   reflash the LSI firmware for this.

   Both nodes had an older 2.6 node image running on it before.

   After a full RAID re-initialization that produced no errors, I now get
   yet another faillure:

   Exception: RuntimeError('Failed to set install bootloader'.)

   Can it be the SSD or RAID controller? I could swap out the SSD for a 2.5

Re: [Users] oVirt 3.3/F19 - Windows guest unable to access network

2013-09-20 Thread SULLIVAN, Chris (WGK)
Hi,

Just following up on this issue. Turns out the network problems were being
caused by the bond0 interface.

The initial configuration was two NICs teamed as bond0, which was then bridged
to the ovirtmgmt interface. With this configuration, RHEL guests could access
the network normally but Windows guests (XP, 7, 2008 R2) could not. After
deactivating the bond0 interface and bridging one of the NICs directly to the
ovirtmgmt interface, both RHEL and Windows guests have fully functioning
networks.

I am not sure why exactly the bond0 interface was not working as intended. The
initial configuration had the mode as balance-rr, is this known to cause
problems? My intention was to have the mode as balance-alb however the bonding
driver in F19 seems to completely ignore any BONDING_OPTS settings in the
ifcfg-bond0 file. Attempts to change the bonding mode directly via
/sys/class/net/bond0/bonding/mode repeatedly failed due to 'the bond having
slaves', even after the bond had been taken down via ifconfig. I was not able
to remove the bond0 definition either, even after removing the ifcfg-bond0 file
and the modprobe.d alias.

Is there a recommended/tested bonding configuration HOWTO for oVirt on F19?

Joop: Responses as follows:
 - Windows firewall was disabled in each Windows VM
 - Changing the CPU setting and starting the VM directly on the host via QEMU
(i.e. not through oVirt) did not seem to affect the behavior

Thanks,

Chris

 Iptables/firewalld on the host are switched off and the network
 definitions in the XML for each VM (Windows/RHEL) are the same. The
 virtio network drivers are installed in the guest. The guest was
 created from a Win 2008 R2 template, which was created from a VM
 imported from oVirt 3.2. Software versions below.

Just to be sure, iptables/firewalld!=Windows Firewall. Is there a rule
in the windows firewall to allow ping or is it disabled?

 Are there any manual configuration steps required on the host to
 support Windows guests? Are there any particular diagnostic steps I
 could take to try and narrow down the cause?

Don't think so, just converted a Windows2008R2 datacenter guest from
Vmware to oVirt and it ran, after adding virtio drivers or using e1000
and/or ide disks.

 Versions:

 -oVirt 3.3.0-4

 -F19 3.10.11-200

 -QEMU 1.4.2-9

 -Libvirt 1.1.2-1

 -VDSM 4.12.1-2

 -virtio-win 0.1-52

Your problem looks like the problem Ren? had with his Solaris guest, its
a recent thread. Turned out that setting -cpu Nehalem by ovirt caused
networking in the Solaris guest to fail.
Don't think this is your problem though since lots of people run Windows
guest without problems.

'ovirtmgmt' bridge gets created in the host during the 'Initializing'
phase, may be you can check the existence of this bridge in the host. By
looking at the log, engine is not able to communicate with the vdsm in
the host.

Is the there anything in /var/log/vdsm/vdsm.log ?

Well, for what it´s worth, here´s our ifcfg-bond0:
DEVICE=bond0
NM_CONTROLLED=no
USERCTL=no
BOOTPROTO=none
BONDING_OPTS=mode=4 miimon=100
TYPE=Ethernet

And we also have VLAN-interfaces on top of that, and then bridges on top of
them, and no issues so far.

Found the mode-definitions at http://www.linuxhorizon.ro/bonding.html:
mode=0 (balance-rr)
Round-robin policy: Transmit packets in sequential order from the first
available slave through the last. This mode provides load balancing and fault
tolerance.

mode=1 (active-backup)
Active-backup policy: Only one slave in the bond is active. A different slave
becomes active if, and only if, the active slave fails. The bond's MAC address
is externally visible on only one port (network adapter) to avoid confusing the
switch. This mode provides fault tolerance. The primary option affects the
behavior of this mode.

mode=2 (balance-xor)
XOR policy: Transmit based on [(source MAC address XOR'd with destination MAC
address) modulo slave count]. This selects the same slave for each destination
MAC address. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

mode=3 (broadcast)
Broadcast policy: transmits everything on all slave interfaces. This mode
provides fault tolerance.

mode=4 (802.3ad)
IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic link aggregation. Creates aggregation groups that share
the same speed and duplex settings. Utilizes all slaves in the active
aggregator according to the 802.3ad specification.

HTH!

driver in F19 seems to completely ignore any BONDING_OPTS settings in the
ifcfg-bond0 file.

Well, for what it´s worth, here´s our ifcfg-bond0:
DEVICE=bond0
NM_CONTROLLED=no
USERCTL=no
BOOTPROTO=none
BONDING_OPTS=mode=4 miimon=100
TYPE=Ethernet

And we also have VLAN-interfaces on top of that, and then bridges on top of
them, and no issues so far.

Found the mode-definitions at http://www.linuxhorizon.ro/bonding.html:
mode=0 (balance-rr)
Round-robin policy: Transmit packets in sequential order from the first
available slave through the last. This mode provides load balancing and fault
tolerance.

mode=1 (active-backup)
Active-backup policy: Only one slave in the bond is active. A different slave
becomes active if, and only if, the active slave fails. The bond's MAC address
is externally visible on only one port (network adapter) to avoid confusing the
switch. This mode provides fault tolerance. The primary option affects the
behavior of this mode.

mode=2 (balance-xor)
XOR policy: Transmit based on [(source MAC address XOR'd with destination MAC
address) modulo slave count]. This selects the same slave for each destination
MAC address. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

mode=3 (broadcast)
Broadcast policy: transmits everything on all slave interfaces. This mode
provides fault tolerance.

mode=4 (802.3ad)
IEEE 802.3ad Dynamic link aggregation. Creates aggregation groups that share
the same speed and duplex settings. Utilizes all slaves in the active
aggregator according to the 802.3ad specification.

HTH!

/Karli

Joop: Responses as follows:

 - Windows firewall was disabled in each Windows VM

 - Changing the CPU setting and starting the VM directly on the host via QEMU
(i.e. not through oVirt) did not seem to affect the behavior

Have you checked the RHEV documentation and searched Microsoft Technet
for Nic Teaming?

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831648.aspx - seems MS
Server 2012 R2 supports a type 4 bond.

An excellent doc about bonding is:

yes. you could try to add the host to ovirt-engine, then create a VM,
then dd the guest into the managed disk by ovirt-engine.
if you use a LUN per disk, you can also use the direct lun disk with
ovirt-engine without porting/converting the data.

On a different node what is the role of vdsm ?

its the agent on the hypervisor the engine uses to communicate with.

Your hypervisor must be CentOS 6 or Fedora 18/19 in order to be able to
manage it with oVirt (other Linux distributions are still a wip).

As oVirt has a totally different concept as virt-manager you have to
import your machines into oVirt. As Markus already wrote this can be
done using virt-v2v.

  Hello,

  welcome to the list. ovirt uses a central management server
  (ovirt-engine) that
  manages the machine definition in a database. It controls VMs
  on several hypervisor
  hosts with this information. To get a VM into the
database you
  have to import
  it. virt-v2v helps me for VMWare sources and it should do the

  use examples on http://wiki.qemu.org/Features/QAPI/GuestAgent;
  http://wiki.qemu.org/Features/QAPI/GuestAgent for ways to test from

  Yielded no return and nothing logged in any guest. Have installed
  ovirt-guest-agent and spice-vdagent in both Windows- and Fedora clients
  and that works perfectly, so the virtio-serial config/drivers are OK in
  general, it´s just qemu-ga that´s troublesome.

  Is there anyone here that´s managed getting qemu-ga working in any guest
  at all?

Hi,
I thought I had replied but apparently I didn't:)
well, the agent is managed by QEMU and oVirt only creates a device in guest for
use by host's libvirt. Then the oVirt commands for e.g. snapshot or shutdown
should use qemu-ga for that. AFAIK it wasn't tested thoroughly
If you want to play with it yourself disable the support in vdsm by disabling
qgaEnable parameter in vdsm.conf

Thanks,
michal

Kumar, would you provide more of vdsm.log?
If now, after several hours, you log into the host and attempt

vdsClient -s 0 getVdsCaps

is vdsm still stuck in its initialization phase, or returns a complete
information?

 Are there any vms running in this host?

[Users] Disk statistics

2013-09-20 Thread Joop

Hi All,

Because of an question on IRC I looked at
/api/disks/long-disk-id/statistics but all values (datum) are ZERO. Its
a disk of a VM that was running a dd if=/dev/vda of=/dev/null so I would
expect something to show up (Did various webpage refreshes of the
mentioned stats url). I also have ovirt-guest-agent running on that VM,
in case it matters and the disk is on a NFS data domain.

What am I missing?

Re: [Users] All VMs disappeared

2013-09-20 Thread Michael McConachie
Hi community.

Centos 6.4 w/Ovirt 3.3.0-0.5.rc.el6.

I have been having the same issue for a few months. (I thought it was
just me.) For me, when I reboot, atleast ~50% of my VMs are gone. When I
drill down to check the disks associated with the missing VMS them all
show illegal states.

I thought it might be hardware related so I replaced all my disks, and
still have the same issue each time I reboot. It's gotten so bad that
that before complete my patch/maint window by rebooting to test updates --
I have to export all the disks to an external LUN just to make sure, and
then detach it from oVirt. I then re-import that LUN as an export share
(via NFS) to get themn back into the system.

Very very strange. Anyways, it till happens to me being fully upated as
of 9/20/2013.

Either you can use the volume set .. option as mentioned in the wikipage

If the Gluster volume is added / managed to the oVirt UI.. go to
Volumes tab, select the gluster volume and
click on Optimize for virt. store. That should also set the volume
options in addition to few other things

this is a (sadly) known issue in 3.3 beta.
it's supposed to be fixed for GA.
please make sure you are using the correct repo.
the GA version is 3.3.0-4.el6.

engine) isn't getting updated. It's a view of that table that's used for
the stats that you see online and is used by the collector for dwh.

http://gerrit.ovirt.org/#/c/12961/
It says

core: disk_image_dynamic statistics (#892596)

vdsm sends disk statistics per disk, while disk_image_dynamic table
contains disk_image ids (volumes). Hence the update on disk ids that
VdsUpdateRunTimeInfo generates, actually does nothing. A quick fix for
this problem is that VdsUpdateRunTimeInfo now updates by the AI id, so
statistics are saved.

  I'm on 3.2.2 el6. Reading that BZ suggests that it is 3.2 related but
 also it speaks of dhw. I don't have the reporting part of ovirt-engine
 installed so don't know it that is causing the zero values.
