(i.e - java on top of android, Swift/Objective-C on top of IOS) I see that there are some already existing mobile clients for oVirt. I'm trying to grasp what we have and what the needs are. moVirt: https://github.com/matobet/moVirt (mbetak) This appears to be more of a lightweight webadmin. No console access, but I believe it's planned as part of OPW. (?) I spoke with mbetak about this a few months ago. When you speak of console, you mean to actually view the VM using spice? sounds very interesting. If I recall, Alon levy (a former red hatter) worked on some spice implementation for html5 or something like that. Anyway, back in TLV I also had some ideas around that. Do you have some IRC meetings or something that I can join? Cheers, Yair nomad: http://www.ovirt.org/Project_Proposal_-_Nomad and https://github.com/Vizuri/ovirt-nomad Looks dead -- last commit 3 years ago. Anyone know more about this one? That's all I see on the first few pages of google. When I think of a mobile client for oVirt, I think the most useful part would be the user portal -- simple operations for start, stop, and the ability to view the console of vms. moVirt mentions it wants to support some basic management operations, though. I think it would be difficult to do complex management in a mobile client. (I'm biased towards huge screens, though.) I'd like to see an official subproject started that coordinates our mobile efforts. Is this possible? What would it take to start it? What would people like to see in such an app? I have an existing ovirt 3.5 (upgraded from 3.4) setup with a Data Center containing four clusters, 3 VM clusters for 3 differenc classes of CPU hosts (Penryn, Nehalem, and SandyBridge). I also have a gluster storage cluster. There are 4 storage domains, an Export domain (Export-Dom1) nfs v1, and ISO domain (Gluster-ISOs) posix FS v1, a Data domain (Gluster Data) GlusterFS V3, and a Data (Master) (Gluster-VM-Store) GlusterFS v3. As Gluster replica 2 is not considered adequate for the hosted-engine storage I created a volume in the gluster store and exported it as NFS. This is what I planned to use as the storage pool for the hosted engine. So far so good. Thanks Sven, Detaching the domain is not an option, sorry if did not make it clear i meant to backup the storage domain while VMs are running. Also regarding the Live Snapshot option, The live snapshot simply create a second hardisk for the VM and start to write on it.. it does not do any backup just a restore point. Thanks, Mohye. Just detach the storage domain (for consistency). Than you can tar the whole thing, maybe other methods work too, but most do not very well when it comes to sparse files. Use tar with the -S flag. Yes exactly, so you can safely backup the first disk. You have a consistent point in time backup. But it depends on your workload, if you run dbs inside the vm you want to have an agent for backups in the vms. there is plenty of documentation on this topic available. -- Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Regards Sven Kieske Systemadministrator Mittwald CM Service GmbH Co. [ovirt-users] Upgrade order 3.4.2 - 3.5.x
Hi, maybe a stupid one. Just want to make sure that nothing goes wrong. We plan to make a rolling upgrade of our landscape going to 3.5.1 in december. So we always need some hypervisor nodes up and running during the process. Looking at older posts I assume that upgrading the engine should be sufficient, while hypervisor nodes with vdsm 4.14.17 (from 3.4 repos) and the active VMs keep on running. The start of the engine after the upgrade should catch up and resync all states. Afterwards I clean hypervisor hosts one by one and clean/reinstall it into the cluster? Thanks in advance. Re: [ovirt-users] webhook
Hi, if I get this correctly, you'd like to be notified when certain event happens (VM created/deleted/etc.) and react upon that. I see multiple possible approaches here: 0, improve Engine extension API (refer to Alon Bar-Lev for details) - if extensions can be packaged as JARs and these JARs could include web fragments [1] it would mean the possibility to deploy custom servlets onto existing Engine instance (in context of webapp that processes extensions) - your custom Java servlet could query REST interface (or be notified once something happens, but AFAIK we don't have that implemented yet) and do whatever logic is needed - once I asked Alon about ^^ but never got response from him - IMHO this would be a nice way to deploy custom Java code on Engine [1] https://blogs.oracle.com/swchan/entry/servlet_3_0_web_fragment 1, improve UI plugin API - add VirtualMachineDataLoaded event fired upon each refresh of VM data in UI table (generalization - {Entity}DataLoaded) - this is similar to existing {Entity}SelectionChange events 2, write UI plugin that uses oVirtJS to periodically check VM events The disadvantage of 1, and 2, is that WebAdmin GUI must be open. (I'm biased towards huge screens, though.) Sorry, I was very excited about the news, so I forgot to answer the rest. I agree about user portal - sounds good to begin with. Another idea I had in the past is to have an app (push-based) that will push events to a special client. We will have a push sever that will get notifications from the event notifier, and this server will push the events to registered clients. Excellent idea! Could we get such notifications and publish them to some event bus within Engine backend (exposing them to other webapps running within Engine EAR context) + have WebSocket webapp that pushes them to connected clients? (or, if we don't want WebSocket, some other push-like alternative) Imagine a different way to build JavaScript web applications - it first fetches all relevant data, caches it, and then just receives updates that modify its cache. I'd like to see an official subproject started that coordinates our mobile efforts. Is this possible? What would it take to start it? What do you mean is that possible? technically sounds feasible to me (well, we'll need to figure out about the console, but an mgmt app without the console, why not?) ) What would people like to see in such an app? I used an example given here: http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Cloud-Init_Integration . But unfortunately I cannot do the same thing If I want to write multiple files to a vm in params.Action class. Thank you in advance! you can use the custom script text box in oVirts cloud-init section, there you can add any cloud-init section - adding files examples can be found here: http://cloudinit.readthedocs.org/en/latest/topics/examples.html#writing-out-arbitrary-files Shahar Havivi. Hi Shahar, Thank you for the reply. To be honest I knew for those scripts but I want to do it in automate fashion just like in that example that I put in my original message. I have tried to specify in params.Files class multiple files: vm_file1 = params.Files(file=[params.File(name = 'file1', content = file1_content, type_= 'PLAINTEXT')]) vm_file2 = params.Files(file=[params.File(name = 'file2', content = file2_content, type_= 'PLAINTEXT')]) and then give them as arguments to params.CloudInit _init_ constructor (files=...) just like in that example above but it seems that I am doing something wrong because it does not write multiple files - it writes only when you specify one file all right. The exception is Error: 'list' object has no attribute 'export' (I tried to specify those files as a list - files=[vm_file1,vm_file2]). Thanks for any help. The custom script is currently the only option to add files via Cloud-Init Thanks, Shahar Havivi. Hi Shahar, Granted. But the example in python http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Cloud-Init_Integration uses custom script :) I just want to know how to do the same thing in case when I want to write more than one file to a VM - and yes - all those multiple files that I want to write are specified via custom scripts. From the link - (The Python SDK paragraph: scontent object holds the custom script): scontent = write_files:\n- content: |\nsearch example.com\nnameserver 10.10.10.1\nnameserver 10.10.10.2\npath: /etc/resolv.conf For example (and just for example), I want to write to /etc/issue and /etc/hosts not only /etc/resolv.conf. In essence, when vm goes to run-once mode I want to write more than one file to a vm via Python (using CloudInit) in automated fashion (and not touching oVirt GUI at all). You don't need to use the GUI, the sdks initialization have custom_script as string which is equivalent to the text box that you see in the GUI, and you can put the same content there (ie multiple files). Is that sufficient enough? Hi Shahar, Thanks! I will try this one. I was not aware of this feature. Although I can see that it was mentioned on the list (my bad). Thank you for your effort! I really do appreciate it! Hi, Please if somebody can help me because I am pretty stuck. As I said in previous posts I used this Python example http://www.ovirt.org/Features/Cloud-Init_Integration to set root password, hostname and resolv.conf. It worked without any problems for 3.4 oVirt version and equivalent Python SDK (ovirt-engine-sdk-python-3.4.x.noarch). Then, I have tried to write through yuml scripts more conf files than just resolv.conf to configure guest. I also saw this post on the list: http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2014-October/028539.html. So based on that, I decided to upgraded oVirt and SDK (ovirt-engine-sdk-python-3.5.0.7-1.el6.noarch) to 3.5 version. The upgrade itself passed without any problem. From that point forward I tried to use custom_script parameter (as suggested by Shahar) inside Initialization class and CloudInit class without any luck. Can somebody please provide a simple Python code to submit yaml script to cloud-init? Also after the upgrade the example script I mentioned above can only change hostname. It does not write resolv.conf anymore nor it sets root password. I don't know if something is changed inside methods? For example, customization of virtual machine (memory, cpu, high availability, pinning to a certain host etc works

I'm wanting to group developers by project and use freeIPA to set sudo commands as needed (group A get oracle, group B get postgresql, etc). Wanting to maximize developer ability while minimizing my clean up time :-) They will be able to delete VMs they create. It's possible to do a kickstart deploy with freeIPA registration but a template from that will be a problem as it will have the same keys for all VMs. Is there a post-creation scripting process I can attach to in ovirt or should I look at a default root user and script that personalizes the new VM? -- -- James P. (2) potentially creating fake events: changes in the displayed data in the UI can occur due to change in the Search query; if I have 50 VMs in my setup, and I initially had the Vms: search query, and now I change it to VMs: name = a*, which results in displaying only 10 VMs, this may falsely hint on removal of 40 VMs from the system. 2, write UI plugin that uses oVirtJS to periodically check VM events not sure if this is referring to VM-related events in the code (e.g. hooking to the click on OK within the New VM / Remove VM dialog, or hooking to the Success callback of the action response, or something similar), or to the VM-related Events (i.e. the ones that are displayed in the GUI within the Events main-tab / bottom section). If the former: can be done, I assume, though not sure how complex it would be to implement the infrastructure for that. If the latter: this will catch actions that were performed either via the GUI or outside the GUI; in this case, it would probably be better to use an Engine extension API (solution 0 above) rather than a UI plugin, since it will be more reliable, will be active even when the GUI is not in use, etc. The disadvantage of 1, and 2, is that WebAdmin GUI must be open. In any case, if you'd like to explore the possibility of doing this via UI plugin, I'm here to help. Re: [ovirt-users] How to do Simulation of huge ovirt setup
Hi This is the correct forum, and you according to the problem description you should use VDSM_Fake. Your problem is that when you install a host from API, it tries to connect via SSL and install the agent. You need to update your VDC_OPTION table. 1. Shut down the ovirt process 2. Run psql on your postgres machine and run the following command: update vdc_options set option_value='false' where option_name='InstallVds'; update vdc_options set option_value='false' where option_name='EncryptHostCommunication'; You should be able to connect to the hosts now. I have looked at following tutorials. http://www.ovirt.org/VDSM_Fake http://www.ovirt.org/Vdsm_Developers#Fake_KVM_Support However I faced problems such as manager not recognizing hosts/setting their status to Install Failed/Non-responsive. Is there a detailed step-by step guide available to do the fake/simulated PSR setup. I have availability of VMs but not of physical hardware. I see multiple possible approaches here: 0, improve Engine extension API (refer to Alon Bar-Lev for details) - if extensions can be packaged as JARs and these JARs could include web fragments [1] it would mean the possibility to deploy custom servlets onto existing Engine instance (in context of webapp that processes extensions) - your custom Java servlet could query REST interface (or be notified once something happens, but AFAIK we don't have that implemented yet) and do whatever logic is needed - once I asked Alon about ^^ but never got response from him - IMHO this would be a nice way to deploy custom Java code on Engine Please allow me to step in as someone who worked on the extensions API as well, There are more missing bits here. You are referring to the webapp side, but this is not enough. We have also the engine side which has to become more pluggable. In addition, we will probably need to handle all kinds of issues that rise from our singletons at engine - class loading might be an issue here, no? You don't want the X-ton (doubleton, tripleton, etc..) phenomena in your setup - you don't want for example X instances of AsyncTaskManager. I think that in general we should strive to turn engine into way more pluggable/modular than it is now, imagine an engine microkernel (for those of you who did not hear the term microkernel, I am referring you to jboss architecture) - we should have a thin microkernel and the rest of the code should be pluggable, using the extension API (and perhaps web fragments as well). What do you think? [1] https://blogs.oracle.com/swchan/entry/servlet_3_0_web_fragment 1, improve UI plugin API - add VirtualMachineDataLoaded event fired upon each refresh of VM data in UI table (generalization - {Entity}DataLoaded) - this is similar to existing {Entity}SelectionChange events relying on changes in the UI table is a bad idea: (1) potentially missing events: the UI displays paginated data; if my VMs are sorted by name, and I have 1000 VMs in my setup, and I just added a VM named z, it will be added to the last page which is not displayed right now, so I wouldn't even be aware that something was added. I was able to add /etc/resolv.conf and additionally I would like to add config files for NICs (ifcfg-ethX) with appropriate values (ip,gw,netmask). From the link - (The Python SDK paragraph: scontent object holds the custom script): scontent = write_files:\n- content: |\nsearch example.com http://example.com\nnameserver 10.10.10.1\nnameserver 10.10.10.2\npath: /etc/resolv.conf For example (and just for example), I want to write to /etc/issue and /etc/hosts not only /etc/resolv.conf. As I said in previous posts I used this Python example
