[ovirt-users] Re: Help installing oVirt on single machine, without cockpit

2021-12-07 Thread Asaf Rachmani
Hi,

The link you attached is for installing the engine on a stand alone machine.
In case you want to have the engine and the host on the same machine you
should install hosted-engine:
https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/installing_ovirt_as_a_self-hosted_engine_using_the_command_line/

Regards,
Asaf

Right
The idea was to have a new cluster level on which we can provide the
latest-and-greatest fixes and capabilities and so to base it on CentOS
stream 9 where SPICE is not available
We anyway intend to keep SPICE in oVirt 4.5 on lower cluster levels, which
should work as long as the hosts are not upgraded to CentOS stream 9

Can you show the current volume info ?
If it's still distributed-replicated, you need to rebalance.

Thank you so much all your valuable input. Finally resolved the issue with
below actions

1) shutdown all the vms running in the volume,
2)  temporarily created new folders in another hdd drive ( in all three hosts)
where it had enough free space
3) expanded the issue volume by adding those new folders as a new bricks  (
volume changed from replicate to distributed replicate )
4) brought up the storage domain online and moved the over utilized disks to
another storage domain
5) removed the new bricks

now all are back to original setup.

[ovirt-users] Help installing oVirt on single machine, without cockpit

2021-12-07 Thread Cameronsplaze222
I'm trying to install both the oVirt engine (so I have the API), and hypervisor
on the same machine. I'm hoping I don't need cockpit, and I can write some
custom scripts to manage oVirt through the API. I tried a couple ways, and both
were blocked:

# on CentOS 9 stream, installing oVirt engine:
On a fresh CentOS install, tried following the directions
[here](https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/installing_ovirt_as_a_standalone_manager_with_local_databases/#Installing_RHEL_for_RHVM_SM_localDB_deploy).
 They failed at step 3.2, when adding the modules (missing groups or modules).
Tried skipping it, but step 3.3.2 failed when running `dnf install
ovirt-engine`, package couldn't be found. The closest package I see is
`ovirt-hosted-engine-setup-2.5.4-1.el9.noarch`. Is that what I want?

# On oVirt node, installing engine:
Couldn't get the networking working, even though I added it during the install
process. Also tried wired connection, and no luck. Blocked early on, but read
this was SUPER minimal anyway, so maybe this wasn't the right path.

I'm just trying to have a working API, along side the hypervisor to run vm's,
both on the same machine. I'm down to go a third way too, if anyone has any
ideas. Thanks!

Running dnf distro-sync --nobest allows it to proceed, which causes some ovirt
packages to be upgraded.

Running hosted-engine --deploy and installing with nfs storage, everything goes
good up until stage 5, at which point vdsm pegs a core at 100% for some
minutes, until the task inevitably fails. hosted-engine --vm-status reports
EngineStarting forever. No memory is consumed to indicate that the VM even
started. The VM never even tries to get a DHCP lease from my router. All
indicators point the vm just not starting, for some reason.

Zero useful information available on Google. Zero useful information available
in the documentation. Zero useful information available in the logs. No clear
cause as to why the hosted engine refuses to start. The NFS share has correct
permissions, and can be mounted. The NFS share is on the same host the engine
is being installed to, in the same subnet/vlan and, even through the same
network adapter. The shared storage works fine for copying the local hosted
engine to the shared storage during the setup process and I can see the files
have been created.

For us, SPICE lets us present VMs in secure networks to unsecure
locations. RDP and VNC will not work for us.

I didn't want to rant but why Red Hat drops useful features is beyond me.
First Satellite 5 (Spacewalk), GlusterFS, not RHV. Yep, we've been a RHV
customer since RHEV v2.2 days. SPICE was the compelling feature then and
remains so.

My 2 cents

[ovirt-users] oVirt host - yum dependency error

2021-12-07 Thread tferic--- via Users

Hi

I have an existing oVirt host 4.4 running on CentOS 8, and I am in the
process of converting the OS to CentOS Stream.

I am getting the following errors:

```
Does anyone know how to resolve it?
Notice: The oVirt host is also a gluster storage server (hyperconverged).
Thanks
Toni
[ovirt-users] Re: no QXL ?
2021-12-07 Thread Alex McWhirter
It's being removed from RHEL 9, unsure of reasoning.
So this mean that oVirt cannot offer SPICE/QXL on RHEL9, there is no
spice package, qemu is compiled without SPICE/QXL support, the kernel
does not support QXL video drivers.
It's not that oVirt is killing off SPICE/QXL, but rather RHEL9 is and
oVirt cannot support a feature not available on the host OS unless 3rd
party packages or a SiG makes them available.
Personally, I would like to know why it's being removed entirely with no recourse instead of becoming an option to enable in the VM config, or an optional RPM that can be installed by the sysadmin.
Thanks.
Are we to assume that VNC mode is the only thing that will be supported for the VM consoles moving forward then?
As the pure SPICE mode only works with QXL display as far as I can tell.
I ask because the VNC or SPICE+VNC modes haven't worked in my environment for over a year now, and that change
would effectively prevent the use of any VM console in my environment.  (Use of VNC with remote viewer always gives
me an authentication error.) Not that it's a normal environment, but that kind of thing should be advertised more. Just in case
simillar issues exist in other deployments.
Yes, one would need to make sure vnc/vga works well before upgrading to the next cluster-level (in oVirt 4.5)
In general it is recommended to test the configuration in the new cluster-level by setting some representative VMs in the environment with a custom compatibility level  and check that they work properly before upgrading to that cluster-level.
Thanks.
Do you have QXL working?
upss.. pardon me, these are from CentOS 9 Steam own repos
Right, and that's the reason for the ongoing work on removing qxl on cluster level 4.7:
I tried this approach (tried Valgrind but it caused vdsmd to run too
slow, so oVirt saw timeouts and moved VMs away), and it does show a
pretty big jump overnight.  Below is the output of a compare of
tracemalloc dump between yesterday afternoon and this morning.  The
files in the traceback are from RPMs:
I think it'd probably be possible to ask the oVirt developers to
detect when these are used and re-expose SPICE support.
The Hyperscale SIG is already looking into shipping custom QEMU
might want to reach out to them and collaborate there.
Would this also require custom oVirt packages, or will the ovirt bits to
You will want to file a bug against qemu in RHEL 9. If you're a RHEL
customer, file support cases against RHEL 9.0 Beta for this.
The reason oVirt dropped it is because RHEL deprecated it in 8.3:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html/8.3_release_notes/rhel-8-3-0-release#BZ-1849563
It got dropped in RHEL 9.0 because this deprecation was not undone before then.
Against which component should I file the bug? We're an oVirt user and
not a RHV user so we can't open support cases for this.
It would be nice to keep it in oVirt even if there's no official support
for it.
Hello,
Are we to assume that VNC mode is the only thing that will be
supported for the VM consoles moving forward then?
As the pure SPICE mode only works with QXL display as far as I can
tell.
I ask because the VNC or SPICE+VNC modes haven't worked in my
environment for over a year now, and that change
would effectively prevent the use of any VM console in my
environment.  (Use of VNC with remote viewer always gives
me an authentication error.) Not that it's a normal environment,
but that kind of thing should be advertised more. Just in case
simillar issues exist in other deployments.
Yes, one would need to make sure vnc/vga works well before upgrading
to the next cluster-level (in oVirt 4.5)
In general it is recommended to test the configuration in the new
cluster-level by setting some representative VMs in the environment
with a custom compatibility level  and check that they work properly
before upgrading to that cluster-level.
Thanks.
Right, and that's the reason for the ongoing work on removing qxl
on cluster level 4.7:
