[ovirt-users] Re: [ANN] oVirt 4.5.5 is now generally available

2023-12-05 Thread Kapetanakis Giannis
Thanks for the update.

Already updated 2 engine setups without any issue.

What about master snapshot repositories you propose? Will these work on EL8
compatible distros like Rocky8 or do we have to switch to Centos-Stream?
Does this stand for both engine and hosts?

https://ovirt.org/develop/dev-process/install-nightly-snapshot.html says only
about Stream.

Thanks,

Giannis

Erkan, is the chat with Rocky devs available anywhere public?

2022-11-08 Thread Kapetanakis Giannis
It seems that vdsm 4.50.3.4-1.el8 has been pushed to centos-ovirt45 which
according to
https://github.com/oVirt/vdsm/blob/master/vdsm.spec.in

# Zero-copy migrations, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/2089434
Requires: qemu-kvm >= 15:6.2.0-11.module+el8.6.0+16360+9e5d914e.4

This is not available in Rocky 8.6, probably not backported from Redhat 8.7?

Hi,

Last night we have an incident of a failed host. Engine issued a fence but did
not restart the vms running on that node on other operational hosts. I'd like
to know if this is normal or I can tune it somehow.

Here are some relevant logs from engine:

[ovirt-users] VMs hung after migration

2018-05-31 Thread Kapetanakis Giannis
Hi,

Please have a look at BZ https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1584775
about VM hung problems I have with latest kernels.

Problem appeared after upgrading to 4.2.3 but I believe it has only to do with
newer kernel and not any part of ovirt/vdsm/libvirt/qemu

regards,

Giannis

In advance, it would make sense to change the default to
/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/apache-ca.pem
since by default it's a symlink to ca.pem (which is now the default)

So default/custom cert would all work

SORRY wrong provider.

So the engine can talk with ovn but not the other way around as I understand.

I think it might have to do with [SSL] settings of ovirt-provider-ovn.conf

[ovirt-users] Failed to synchronize networks of Provider ovirt-provider-ovn

2018-03-16 Thread Kapetanakis Giannis
Hi,

After upgrading to 4.2.1 I have problems with ovn provider.
I'm getting "Failed to synchronize networks of Provider ovirt-provider-ovn."

I use custom SSL certificate in apache and I guess this is the reason.

I've tried to update ovirt-provider-ovn.conf with
[OVIRT]
#ovirt-ca-file=/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/ca.pem
ovirt-ca-file=/etc/pki/ovirt-engine/apache-ca.pem

but still no go

Any tips on this?

thanks

I'm using something like this with ovirt-shell

vm_shutdown:
#!/bin/sh
LOG=/root/ovirt/vm_shutdown_log
echo `date` >> $LOG
/usr/bin/ovirt-shell -f /root/ovirt/vm_shutdown_script >> $LOG
echo "" >> $LOG

vm_shutdown_script:
list vms --kwargs status-state=up|grep name | sed s/'name :'/'action vm'/
| sed -e 's/$/ shutdown/' > /root/ovirt/new_vm_shutdown_script
file /root/ovirt/new_vm_shutdown_script

new_vm_shutdown_script now lists entries like this:
action vm vm1 shutdown
action vm vm2 shutdown
etc.

I've already updated my nodes to latest vdsm and Centos 7 by using an
intermediate new cluster.
I've live migrated the VMs to the new cluster. Didn't expect that to be
available :)

However I couldn't update my old cluster to 3.6 even with no VM running.
It complained that the nodes could make it up to 3.5 only.

Anyway that's old and now I'm in process of migrating the engine to a new el7
host.

[ovirt-users] 3.6 InClusterUpgrade

2017-10-23 Thread Kapetanakis Giannis
Hi,

I'm in the process of upgrading to 4.1 from 3.6.7 (centos 6)
The default cluster runs in 3.5 compatibility mode.

I cannot add a new Centos 7 host:
2017-10-23 13:50:08,359 ERROR

Message: Host v5 is compatible with versions (3.6,4.0,4.1) and cannot join
Cluster Default which is set to version 3.5.

I'm following https://www.ovirt.org/feature/inclusterupgrade/ for upgrading.

I've set
engine-config -s CheckMixedRhelVersions=false --cver=3.5
restarted and set Scheduling policy InClusterUpgrade

Any recommendations how to proceed without shutting down all VMs?

I also want to avoid creating a new cluster with 3.6 version cause then I will
have to shutdown all VMs again.

Thanks

G
ps. The steps I had in mind were:
upgrade serially hosts to Centos 7
migrate VMs there
backup-restore engine to new Centos 7 machine

There was a stalled old configuration file which apparently did not work with

ovirt-optimizer-ui-0.9.1-2.el6.noarch

I think I figured this out.
The connection to optimizer is being done by client's browser and not
the engine...

I used a private network which was not accessible from the browser.

By default vlan interfaces come untagged to vms. This is normal setup.

I guess you want to pass the vlan trunk up to the vm's nic? (multiple
vlans to vm)

I don't know any way of doing that with ovirt but it would be interesting.
I guess you would need something like openvswitch but I don't know if it
will cooperate well with ovirt.

I dont follow - how do you want to share your fc storage over iscsi?

And what are these nodes? Storage nodes? Hypervisors?

Nir

The initial idea was to share FC over IP network. All nodes are ovirt
nodes (hypervisors).

One node see the FC storage share as a block device. Take this block
device and share it over iscsi to node[2].
The node[2] will see the block device and create a new FC target to use
it itself...

I know, its science fiction...

After reading a bit on the subject another solution would be FCoE vn2vn
but this probably requires hardware.

Specific switches with DCB and FIP snooping which i don't have.

Any idea to extend FC to nodes without FC HBAs is welcome.

[ovirt-users] integrate iSCSI and FC on the same oVirt datacenter

2015-10-14 Thread Kapetanakis Giannis

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but maybe someone can provide
directions for my problem.

I have a full FC setup with FC switch and FC HBAs on Linux (Centos) to
access my storage.

However we cannot afford expanding our FC infrastructure thus making it
hard for us to add more nodes in the oVirt setup.
FCoE requires compatible switches and adapters (correct?) which is also
out of budget.

Our storage supports only FC.

I thought something like this might work:

node[1]: FC - ISCSI <-> node[2]: ISCSI - FC

share the FC block device over iscsi and then create a new FC
target+initiator on the new node with same FC lun as the original?

Could this work? How? Other ideas?

regards,

Giannis
ps.
a) a solution would also be to migrate completely to iSCSI but I'm
trying to avoid that atm.
b) another one would be to create a second datacenter for iSCSI but also
trying to avoid that if I can

If not is there a defined process of migrating the engine into a new el7

Is it still up2date?

node migration is no problem but there is room for problems in engine

That is a pretty narrow definition of HA, which is not shared by
most parts of the community (and the world), leading to much confusion
of users on this very ML.

HA in general means your service downtime gets minimized, today mostly
realized through load balancing and clustering software services.

just restarting a service (in this case ovirt-engine vm) on a different
host is not what todays user expect under the term "HA" imho.

in theory it should be possible as a design goal to make multiple
ovirt-engine share one remote data base (remote database support is
already there).

I think this would be a huge feature for ovirt, but also requires quite
some design and coding to be done.

thus adding the devel list.

If ovirt-engine restarts this does not mean that you have a downtime in
your service.

The VMs and nodes already running will not be affected...

So your infrastructure will still be operational while you restart the
engine.

[ovirt-users] soft negative affinity

2015-04-22 Thread Kapetanakis Giannis

Hi,

Can someone comment on this?
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1207255

I've defined a soft negative affinity group for two VMs.

To my understanding if the there are at least 2 nodes available in the
cluster

then the VMs SHOULD start on different nodes.

This does not happen. They start on the same node.
If I make it hard then it works.

However I don't want to make it hard since if there is only one node
available in the cluster then one vm will stay down.

http://tower.onholyground.com/valgrind-test.log

To comment on some other posts in this thread, I also see leaks on my test
system which is running Centos 6.6, but it only has 3 VMs across 2 servers and
3 configured networks and it leaks MUCH slower. I suspect people don’t notice
this on test systems because they don’t have a lot of VMs/interfaces running,
and don’t leave them up for weeks at a time. That’s why I was running these
tests on my production box, to have more VMs up.

I don't think it's related directly to the number of VMs running.
Maybe indirectly if it's related to the number of network interfaces (so
vm interfaces add to the leak).

We've seen the leak on nodes under maintenance...

Kernel: 2.6.32

When the host boots, memory consuption is normal, but after 2 or 3

that all vm's running in the host. If I restart the vdsm service,
memory consuption normalizes, but then it start growing again.

I have seen some BZ about vdsm and supervdsm about memory leaks, but I
don't know if VDSM 4.6.10.8 is still affected by a related bug.

I found the root cause (I was re-installing the engine to be sure).
I didn't have includepkgs in jpackage.repo repository so during engine
install it installed more packages (mainly xmlgraphics-batik which could
replace batik).
I use configuration management and I used jpackage earlier so I just put
it as dependency and don't install ovirt-release35 (I installed it later
after all packages were installed and checked update).

Thanks for your help, maybe it helps also to Kapetanakis.

Cheers,

Luf

That was the reason for me too.

I did the following to fix it:

jpackage.repo:
exclude=xmlgraphics-batik

rpm -e xmlgraphics-batik-1.7-14.jpp6.noarch --nodeps
yumdownloader batik
rpm -Uvh batik-1.7-8.5.el6.x86_64.rpm

/etc/init.d/ovirt-engine restart

The default is to filter. You'll have to add a VM or VNIC custom property
and set the value to False whenever you want to disable the filtering.

What about conflicting values between VM and VNIC. Which has precedence
over the other?

You would think that anything VNIC specific would take precedence, but with
how the code is implemented at this time, before_device_create is called
for all devices, and before_vm_create is called after that. That means
that whatever is defined at the VM level will take precedence.

ok, this worked like a charm but I did some changes.

Maybe you want to update the README on
https://github.com/oVirt/vdsm/blob/master/vdsm_hooks/macspoof/README

engine-config -s
UserDefinedVMProperties='previousPropertiesmacspoof=^(true|false)$'
--cver=3.3

failed with an error:

Cannot set value previousProperties;macspoof=^(true|false)$ to key
UserDefinedVMProperties. Invalid syntax, user defined VM properties
specification should conform to
(([a-z_A-Z0-9])+)=(([^;])+)(;(([a-z_A-Z0-9])+)=(([^;])+))*;?

I changed that to
engine-config -s "UserDefinedVMProperties=macspoof=(true|false)"
like it is defined in http://www.ovirt.org/Engine_config_examples
which was inserted with no error.

CustomDeviceProperties also inserted like
engine-config -s CustomDeviceProperties=
'{type=interface;prop={ifacemacspoof=(true|false)}}'

so both true/false options could be available.

VM option indeed takes precedence over VNIC option.

You should also take notice that setting macspoof=false or
ifacemacspoof=false does the opposite of at least what I expected.

It filters.

I had to apply with either macspoof=true or ifacemacspoof=true to
disable filtering.

The README also has that the other way.
Either the README has to be changed or the options could be renamed to
something like disable_macspoof_filter and disable_ifacemacspoof_filter

just to be sure, please note, that the task actually completed
successfully from my point of view. The new VM (direved from the
template clone task) is fully usable and on the webadmin the task is
shown as "completed".

So maybe at some point in time the engine does get the job status wrong
and the problem begins...

I need to look into this but I think it should be safe to remove this
record while the engine is down. Make sure to make a backup if you
try!

OK, I did the following test:

- created a new VM from my custom template (with cloned Disk)
- waited for the job to complete
- manually deleted the related DB entry from the table "async_tasks"
- set host/node to maintenance
- rebootet engine

Result: The VM did NOT disappear! :-)

I think somehow ovirt-engine does get the results of the job wrong, thus
it does not recognize that the job completed *successfully* and does a
retry after reboot (which fails horribly and leads to disappearing VMs).

Hi,

I had the same experience with the latest beta version,
ovirt-engine-3.3.0-1.el6.noarch

After create VM from template was initiated, two rows where inserted in
the table "async_tasks" .
After the creation finished successfully (and the VM could be used), one
row was deleted from the table

but one was left there.

If you restart ovirt-engine then the VMs (created from template) where
deleted. Their disks were not deleted.

The left over row was also deleted.

If you manually delete the left-over row from the table before you
restart ovirt-engine, then

the VM is not deleted.

Is there a BZ for this to monitor it's fix progress?

regards,

Giannis
