[ovirt-users] Re: Another illegal disk snapshot problem!

2020-12-08 Thread Magnus Isaksson
Hi

We have the same issue as you, and we are also using vProtect.
I have no solution, but I'm very interested in how to address this.

Some VM:s we do have managed to remove the illegal snapshots after changing
storage for the VM:s disks, but we have 3-4 VM:s that will not want to remove
the illegal snapshot.
As for us, this issue has escalated the last couple of months.

Is it only us who have these issues or does people not take backup of their
VM:s? Feels like more people should have these issues.

Subject: [ovirt-users] Another illegal disk snapshot problem!

Hi List,

 oVirt 4.3

I know there have been threads about this before - but I am unable to find the
exact scenario I am facing.

I have a VM with 3 snapshots - Active, and 2 dated ones (technically created
by vProtect)

After trying to do a fresh snapshot in the GUI it failed out and marked one of
the old snapshot disks as 'illegal' - then the other tried to follow suit.

I tried 'unlocking' the entity using the unlock_entity.sh tool but any action
reverts them back to illegal.

Following previous advice - I can see the VDSM status is all showing LEGAL:

image:23710238-07c2-46f3-96c0-9061fe1c3e0d

 - c3dadf14-bb4e-45a7-8bee-b9a01fe29ae1
status: OK, voltype: INTERNAL, format: RAW, legality: LEGAL,
type: SPARSE, capacity: 107374182400, truesize: 18402942976

 - a6d4533b-b0b0-475d-a436-26ce99a38d94
status: OK, voltype: INTERNAL, format: COW, legality: LEGAL,
type: SPARSE, capacity: 107374182400, truesize: 21521768448

 - 4b6f7ca1-b70d-4893-b473-d8d30138bb6b
status: OK, voltype: LEAF, format: COW, legality: LEGAL, type:
SPARSE, capacity: 107374182400, truesize: 12617457664

The 2 bold entries are the 'illegal' snapshots.

 Looking in the DB see's:

select
  image_guid,parentid
  ,imagestatus
  ,vm_snapshot_id
  ,volume_type
  ,volume_format
  ,active
from images
where image_group_id='23710238-07c2-46f3-96c0-9061fe1c3e0d';

 4 | d2d82724-9fe7-452c-a114-f8d70b20 | 2 | 4
| f

So from here previous advice has been to do things such as delete the
snapshot/disk etc but thats when they showed as illegal status. I also notice
the Active Image is not the same image that has a parentid of all 0's so im
not sure on the process of possibly deleting the other snapshots and disks
cleanly and/or safely.

Deleting or any tasks in the gui 100% fails and its at a point that if I shut
down the (critical) VM it will not come back on because of these status'.

On top of this what is a good way to take a clean, manual backup of current in
use disk before I start playing with this in case worse comes to worse I have
to try build it as a new server (As at this point I can't trust my vProtect
backups)

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Joe

[ovirt-users] Re: VM with illegal snapshots

2020-11-17 Thread Magnus Isaksson
Hello

We have the same issue, and not just one VM, we have about 10-15 VMs that have
either snapshots that are illegal or snapshots that is not possible to remove.
This have been an issue for quite some time, all since beginning of 4.3 we get
"vm with illegal snapshots" almost every week, and most often we can remove the
snapshot and all is ok, but now this have escalated quite much and leaves us
with customer VM that we may not be able to reboot or that the disk gets
corrupted, that have happed a few times.
[cid:2c902230-ccb6-4e63-98f6-ea667ba239bf]
This is the VM with most snapshots that we are unable to remove any of them.

Engine is on 4.3.10 and hosts on 4.3.9

How can i safely remove these snapshots?
(I am not super comfortable around database "hacking" so some informative
description would be much appreciated.)

And how can we eliminate that these things happen?

Cheers
 Magnus

The error message you've got was meant to avoid removing a snapshot from a
broken chain.

On the Active VM snapshot -> Disks, is there any disk with Illegal status?

Deleting the whole snapshot can be done from the DB:
delete from snapshots where snapshot_id = '.';

please avoid deleting stuff from DB directly , you should use teh right SP for
doing the job since in many time database consistency is handled by the SP code
and doing it directly will leave inconsistent data which may cause problems

on this case you should use :

SELECT DeleteSnapshot(<'snapshot-id'>);

Although it's recommended to understand the root cause for that one.

Can you please share your engine.log?

[ovirt-users] Migrate running hosts to new Engine

2019-09-27 Thread Magnus Isaksson
 Hello all,

I need to migrate 4 hosts running CentOS with oVirt 4.2 to a new Engine that
runs 4.3 and not disrupt the VMs on these hosts? The VMs need to be running, i
have a slim option of downtime for them, but rather not.

The reason is that my current engine 4.2 will not upgrade to 4.3, tried so many
times, but all i get is a white page after the upgrade, according to
engine-setup, was a success.

So, how can i do this?

[ovirt-users] Re: Dropped RX Packets

2019-05-16 Thread Magnus Isaksson
Hello

@strahil
The packet drops are frequent, every time i run "ip -s link" on the guest there
is new dropped packets, on the hosts it says "0" and in oVirt it says "0".

I can run tcpdump on hosts and guests, but i don't know how to capture the
dropped packets with tcpdump.

There are no RX or TX errors anywhere, not on hosts, guests or switches.

The connection drops are completely random, sometimes after a few minutes and
sometimes after a couple of hours, really hard to narrow down, but this may be
some errors in our customers network, they are investigating it now, so i will
come back with that issue is it still persists.

@Oliver
I tried this, unfortunately still same result, still dropping packets.

@Darell
I tried increasing the RX and TX buffer on the hosts, but the guests still drop
packets.

I am using dual 10G, setup in Active-Backup going to two switches, but the
second switch is now turned off during the testing to narrow this down.

[ovirt-users] Dropped RX Packets

2019-05-16 Thread Magnus Isaksson
Hello all!

I'm having quite some trouble with VMs that have a large amount of dropped
packets on RX.
This, plus customers complain about short dropped connections, for example one
customer has a SQL server and an other serevr connecting to it, and it is
randomly dropping connections. Before they moved their VM:s to us they did not
have any of these issues.

Does anyone have an idea of what this can be due to? And how can i fix it? It
is starting to be a deal breaker for our customers on whether they will stay
with us or not.

I was thinking of reinstalling the nodes with oVirt Node, instead of the full
CentOS, would this perhaps fix the issue?

The enviroment is:
Huawei x6000 with 4 nodes
Each node having Intel X722 network card and connecting with 10G (fiber) to a
Juniper EX 4600. Storage via FC to a IBM FS900.
Each node is running a full CentOS 7.6 connecting to a Engine 4.2.8.2

[ovirt-users] Upgrade engine to 4.3.3 or setup a new engine

2019-05-09 Thread Magnus Isaksson
Hello all

I'm having trouble upgrading my engine to 4.3.3 from 4.2.8
The upgrade goes well, no errors but webgui wont load, it just says "waiting
for engine"

I have tried to set up a new machine with engine and import the DB from the
old(after upgrade) still the same problem.

So after quite a few tries i gave up and set up a fresh new engine 4.3.3
But can i move/migrate the hosts with running VM:s in to the new engine?
In vmware vcenter it is just to add the host and all VM:s and stuff comes over,
but im guessing from what ive read that it is not that simple with ovirt.
Or how should i solve this?

Hello,

Thanks for taking the time,

In the meantime I did a new installation on a new machine and imported the old
storage domain and then imported the vm's so I am back that way. More downtime
than I would have liked but hey it is my home environment that I treat like
almost like an enterprise environment since I am a geek. :)

I checked the old machine now and noticed it has a lot of errors. Didn't notice
the kernel sense errors about the device before only that I would get strange
problems in the engine which I know think is related to the disk errors.

If this is a problem while restoring a 4.3.0 backup to a 4.3.3 engine is it

Following the installation part of the release notes of 4.3.0 will result in
4.3.3 being installed.

[ovirt-users] Gluster suggestions

2019-04-16 Thread Magnus Isaksson
Hello

I would like some suggestions on what type of solution with Gluster i should
use.

I have 4 hosts with 3 disks each, i want to user as much space as possible but
also some redundancy, like raid5 or 6
The 4 hosts are running oVirt on CentOS 7
I have 2 clusters due to some licensing issues, so i cant use ovirts setup of
gluster

Today i have set it up as follows
Type: Disperse
Number of Bricks: 1 x (8 + 4) = 12

So i have 3 bricks per host (one brick per disk)

But this setup is not working very well, as soon as i get some traffic on the
volume this start to fail on the ovirt nodes, loosing connection etc.

All hosts are connected via 10G interface

So any suggestions on how i would set this up as best is much appreciated.

Regards
 Magnus Isaksson

I have 2 hosts per cluster, and i have 2 clusters, 4 hosts (its an Huawei x6000)

I know oVirt don't support disperse, that's why i run gluster outside of oVirt.
And doing that i get a bit more freedom with setting up gluster.
So what would be an good setup to be able to use as much space as possible and
some redundancy with the 4 hosts i have?

I did not quite get this - are you saying you can have only 2 nodes in
one cluster?

Disperse volumes are not supported with oVirt. It's either replica 3
or replica 2 + arbiter.

[ovirt-users] Re: Gluster suggestions

2019-04-16 Thread Magnus Isaksson
Its for storage of VM disks, not OS but like filestorage.

I have done a similar setup with distributed replicated arbiter volumes, but i
loose so much storage space.
Each disk is 6TB, in a raid 5 it would be 66TB, with dispersed ~45TB, with
D-R-A it was around 28TB, quite a massive loss.

It was an replicated 3 arbiter 1 setup. When i did this i used LVM and set
Arbiter volume as a smaller disk, think it was 2TB

Like this:
H| 12 3 4
-
1| D1 D1 A1 D4
2| D4 D2 D2 A2
3| A3 A4 D3 D3

Followed this:
https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_gluster_storage/3.4/html/administration_guide/creating_arbitrated_replicated_volumes
- Example 5.10. Example of a chained configuration

[ovirt-users] GlusterFS and oVirt

2019-01-20 Thread Magnus Isaksson
Hello

I have quite some trouble getting Gluster to work.

I have 4 nodes running CentOS and oVirt. These 4 nodes is split up in 2
clusters.

I do not run Gluster via oVirt, i run it stand alone to be able to use all 4
nodes into one gluster volume.

I can add all peers successfully, and i can create an volume and start it with
sucess, but after that it starts to getting troublesome.

If i run gluster volume status after starting the volume it times out, i have
read that ping-time needs to bee more than 0 so i set it on 30, Still the same
problem.

>From now on, i can not stop a volume nor remove it, i have to stop glusterd
>and remove it from /var/lib/gluster/vols/* on all nodes to be able to do
>anything with gluster.

>From time to time when i do a gluster peer status it shows "disconnected" and
>when i run it again directly after it show "connected"

I get a lot of these errors in glusterd.log

  * Uninstalled and removed all files regarding ovirt agent
  *   Rebooted the machine
  * Not sure if this was nessesary, but uncommented “device_prefix =

I have installed MikroTik Cloud Hosted Router on my oVirt 4.2 setup
It starts fine and so but oVirt complains about guest-agent.

At MikroTik this information is available regarding guest-agent

But I don't understand what I shall do with that information to get it working.

Can somebody help me?

Hi Shani,

I am currently using NFS shares on this oVirt node 4.1.6 host without problem,

But it is when I want to access these NFS shares from another host/client that

My first thought was to check with firewalld, but that is not running, so how
are these iptables rules set? And how do I add an opening for NFS?
I have checked that troubleshooting guide but it have no info about this.

Hi Mangnus,
Have you tried the troubleshooting-nfs-storage-issues page?
https://www.ovirt.org/documentation/how-to/troubleshooting/troubleshooting-nfs-storage-issues/

Subject: oVirt node and NFS

Hi,

This is probably an easy thing, but I can’t seem to find the solution.

On my oVirt node 4.1 I have some NFS shares that I want other hosts to reach,
but I noticed that the firewall is not open for that on the host.
So, how to I configure the Nodes firewall?

[ovirt-users] LDAP sources

2017-11-15 Thread Magnus Isaksson

Hello,

I have tried googling and searching in the documentation, but i can't
seem to find any instructions on how to remove a authentication source.

The background is that i did set up an FreeIPA server for auth, worked
perfectly, but i ran into some problems using that to auth other
systems, so i had to setup a new FreeIPA server and added that to
oVirt, but now i want to remove the old one, but can not seem to find
how.

Anyone sitting on that info?

And while on the subject, how do i set the FreeIPA auth as default auth
source in oVirt?

[ovirt-users] VLAN trunk

2017-11-12 Thread Magnus Isaksson

Hello,

In VMware you create a vlan and for tag you choose "all" or 4095.
What is the equivalent in oVirt?

I am setting up a pfSense firewall and i dont want to create a new NIC
for every VLAN i want in the firewall, so in VMware im creating 3 nics,
WAN, VGT and HA Sync, with that i can add as many internal VLAN i want.

Cheers

[ovirt-users] NIC Bonding

2017-11-06 Thread magnus . isaksson
Hello!
I'm new(-ish) to oVirt and have a question regarding network.

I currently use vmware, the hosts have 4 nic each and connected to two
switches in stack(extreme), i have two vSwitch with two nic each setup in
active/standby, with this i don't have to do anything with the physical switch.
So how do i do this setup on oVirt so i don't need to configure the
switches?
I know how to bond the cards, but i am afraid of a switchloop, so i just want
to make sure that does not happen.
