Re: [Veritas-bu] Dealing with frozen media in Netbackup

2010-06-16 Thread Wayne T Smith
I used to do more, but recently (on my v5.1 NetBackup setup) I've

   - look at /usr/openv/netbackup/db/media/errors once or twice a week,
generally Monday and Friday when I tried to review that each client was
   having successful backups.
   - From the errors file, I'd look to see if there were "too many" errors
or if there was a pattern of errors such as on one tape drive. Clean that
tape drive (cleaning may not be an appropriate action for your drive)
   - For each tape that had an error, freeze it:
  - /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/admincmd/bpmedia -freeze -m -h

  - Note that if no data was written, the tape is free and can't be
frozen. For this case, change the tape to a different pool, my Baudelaire
pool (for tapes that have had a hard time).
   - Run the "Media Summary" job in verbose mode. For each tape listed as
   frozen and expired:
  - expire it with "sudo bpexpdate -d 0 -force -m
  - change it to my Baudelaire pool
   - Now and again, whenever I was short of tapes or had the time or
inclination, and a free tape drive, do a quick erase on the tapes in the
Baudelaire pool and return the successful erased-tapes to Scratch.
   - Now and again, run the errors file through a stats program to find the
number of errors for each tape. Discard or return to vendor tapes with "too
many" errors. Alternatively, I'd sometimes suspect a tape of being "bad"
and would run "cat /usr/openv/netbackup/db/media/errors|grep " to
see the count, with the advantage of seeing the dates of each error.

I've never seen a tape automatically go out of freeze state, but I've frozen
many more tapes than NetBackup does with its "x errors in y hours" rule.
Also, most of my "real" errors on my LTO-I tapes were write errors; almost
all read errors could be accounted for by the tape recently having a write
error.

Nicely, I won't be doing any of this soon, as I'm well into switching to a
6.5 system writing to a Quantum 6550 which has a remote 6550 partner. I'm a
big fan of writing to disk and using OST and a Storage Lifecycle Policy
instead of tapes and "NetBackup Vault" to make copies of tapes. Very slick.

Cheers, Wayne

All issues I've seen with system_state/shadow copy backups have been fixed
by following a few simple procedures:
1. Ensure that the client is set up to use VSS, not VSP. Don't even
install VSP.
2. Uninstall and re-install the client
3. Ensure that you have at least 300MB of free space on the system drive
4. Install the latest hotfixes for VSS. (sysadmins typically don't do
this). http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349

Very rarely we still have issues and then have to follow a Microsoft KB
article that resolves this (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940184)

Always remember that NetBackup is the VICTIM of VSS issues, not the culprit.

2010-06-16 Thread judy_hinchcliffe
Won't give you complete solution, but will give you some tips.

Has you already have LTO2 tape -first make note of what Maida Type you have
them setup as.

When you set up new library in NB
The LTO4 tape drive needs to be setup as the same Media Type as your LTO2 tapes
- this way NB will know that it can mount an LTO2 tape in it.

When you setup your LTO5 drives - do not use the same media type, set them up
with a different type.
Issue here is that LTO2's were known as HCART2 , LTO4's as HCART which would
put LTO5's at HCART2 -
But it is just a tag so you may have to use HCART3 for the LTO5 drives.
Then setup your barcode rules to bring the LTO5 tapes in as HCART3, you should
already have a rule for your

You just have to make sure in NB the LTO2 and LTO5 tapes have a different media
type, and that type matches the type of for the correct tape drive.

Currently we are having our backup running on LTO2 drives with netbackup 7
application.

We are going for new library with 2 LTO5 and 1 LTO4 drive which is HP MSL8096.
We will use LTO5 drive for any new backup and will use LTO4 drive to restore
the data backed up on LTO2 tapes.

Please let me know how this will work using single library with two different
LTO drive and different type of media in library.

I know that MSL8096 can be partitioned in two libraries etc..

Please give me complete solution based on above scenario including HP Library
and Netbackup 7 application.

Or

The tape summary report will show you which tapes are frozen.

Either run that ever day in the GUI

Not sure whether anyone can help here?

We have multiple environments 5.1 and 6.5 and rather a lot of frozen media.
Working through these lists now, but i'm after a better process moving forward.

Does anyone have 'good practice' method i can adopt/adapt, anyone using any
scripts i could find useful? We have a reporting tool but moving over to
Symantec offering soon so don't want to invest any time in that.

We need a consolidated approach to deal with freezes every day, instead of
every few months.

2010-06-16 Thread Lightner, Jeff
When media is frozen it gets logged. (System log in our case.)You
could simply examine the logs each day to see if you see any freezes and
determine why at that point. i.e. Other messages indicating the drive
failed to mount or unmount the tape. Most freezes in my experience are
hardware related. Note that some media that is frozen automatically
gets unfrozen automatically on later attempts so be sure to first verify
it is still frozen before spending time investigating.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Dealing with frozen media in Netbackup

Not sure whether anyone can help here?

We have multiple environments 5.1 and 6.5 and rather a lot of frozen
media. Working through these lists now, but i'm after a better process
moving forward.

Does anyone have 'good practice' method i can adopt/adapt, anyone using
any scripts i could find useful? We have a reporting tool but moving
over to Symantec offering soon so don't want to invest any time in that.

We need a consolidated approach to deal with freezes every day, instead
of every few months.

Mike

[Veritas-bu] /vrts_image_size_record

2010-06-16 Thread Nathan Kippen
I have windows clients that are continually hanging on streams that are
backing up system_state or shadow copy components. The job details window
shows "/vrts_image_size_record" as the current file being backed up -- which
is not a file, but a process the master server is doing to do some checks
and balances. Has anybody else out there had this problem?

[Veritas-bu] Netbackup 7 with HP MSL8096 infrastructure

2010-06-16 Thread jatsy1974

Currently we are having our backup running on LTO2 drives with netbackup 7
application.

We are going for new library with 2 LTO5 and 1 LTO4 drive which is HP MSL8096.
We will use LTO5 drive for any new backup and will use LTO4 drive to restore
the data backed up on LTO2 tapes.

Please let me know how this will work using single library with two different
LTO drive and different type of media in library.

I know that MSL8096 can be partitioned in two libraries etc..

Please give me complete solution based on above scenario including HP Library
and Netbackup 7 application.

You may also want to try a quick "test" Backup, using the NTBackup tool,

This Technote may be worth a read. To get a better understanding :)
It refers to 5.1, but it gives you an idea on what is needed for
successful backups of Windows Machines.

NOTE: Ensure that your Windows boxes are using VSS to do the backups,
and not VSP! Check the settings using BPClient or from the GUI under
Master Server Properties / Client Attributes. Add a client in there and
check the TAB "Windows Open File Backup". Ensure VSP is not enabled and
Win2k3 or Win2k8 boxes are using VSS!

Ok, slight correction

2003 servers it gets Shadow Copy Components:\

2008 servers it gets System_State:\

(but that could be dependent on vsp or vss - not sure)

But my policies say All-Local_Drives and it has gotten theses.

My daily full hot catalog backup which runs at 6am randomly failed this
morning with a status 63 (process killed by a signal). The NBU
troubleshooter for this error code says that the most likely cause of
this error is someone cancelling the backup but I'm the backup admin and
was in my car when I saw the error message. It was the parent job which
gave me this status message but on a second attempt it appears to have
completed successfully. However... the nbdb staging job ended with a
status code 150 (termination requested by administrator) which again
can't be correct as I was in my car at the time.

I've run the full manually since I got into the office and it completed
successfully. I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen anything like
this before ?

Thanks in advance,

Mark

2010-06-16 Thread Wilkinson, Alex
Hi all,

Doing some test upgrades from 6.0MP4 to 7.0 on Win2K3 Standard SP2.

I get the following error upon the "Installation" step:

06-16-2010,16:57:53 : DEBUG: Error 2755: Server returned unexpected error
1601 attempting to install package \
   C:\Software\NBU_7.0\NetBackup_7.0_Win_GA\NB_7.0_Win_FA\x86\Symantec
NetBackup.msi.
   06-16-2010,16:57:53 : ERROR: Internal Error 2755. 1601,
C:\Software\NBU_7.0\NetBackup_7.0_Win_GA\NB_7.0_Win_FA\x86\Symantec
NetBackup.msi
   06-16-2010,17:04:02 : Action ended 17:04:02: INSTALL. Return value 3.

There are some ugly hacks as work arounds that dont seem to work:

Has anyone else encountered this ? If so, can you please share with me your
fix/workaround ?

Thanks!
