[VFB] Re: Gather milkweed

2009-10-12 Thread Michael Bliss
Joyce,

I have done the Milkweed fly. But Kapok is actually I think something way
different. As I remember it comes from a tree. It was used in life
preservers. Very good flotation. It makes a great post for emergers. I
bought a bag from an export business in CA. If you would like some I think
I can find it and send you some.

KAPOK - was [VFB] Re: Gather milkweed

2009-10-12 Thread Allan Fish

Mike Bliss spaketh thusly:

I have done the Milkweed fly. But Kapok is actually I think
something way different. As I remember it comes from a tree.

Mike, you're right on. They gathered milkweed seeds to replace
kapok during Archie Bunker's BIG War (WWII) when Kapok was
unavailable. Memory says it came from the Phillipines which wer
under Japanese occupation. At least that is what we were told at the
time.

Hm. Wikipedia (can you believe something anyone can edit?) says
that Kapok is native to Mexico and Central AMerica. Then they show
pictures of kapok trees in Haaii and India.

The milkweed collection was probably because they could not get
enough kapok. I was too young to be involved but my brother decided
he was going to get rich - I think you could get $10 for a pound of
milkweed seeds. But I think a pound of milkweed seeds would be about
4 or 5 bushels and he rapidly found that there was not that much
milkweed in the county.

Thanks for resurrecting memories.

Now that we are getting to collecting Milkweed for the War Effort, we as
students in school, in the fall of the year collected the pods, that is not
what we called them. I have forgotten what is was. In any case, our school was
a collection station and we had contests on what class would collect the most.
We walked along the road out of the city and in the fields to collect the

[VFB] Re: fur swap

2009-10-12 Thread Peter Gramp
So, just to make certain I get the gist right:
Any fly with fur... 12 flies...due 01JAN2010?
*IF* that's the case, count me in - I'm not sure what I'll do, but I'm
thinking it will be in the 12 to 16-ish range for size.
I have a silly work trip over a wednesday to friday where I'll have more
than enough time to tie up a few dozen flies
(two or three dozen to squelch my perfectionism via practice, then one
more dozen for 'good enough to swap' status ;) )
(if I misread the due date, sorry for the false alarm, but I don't wish to
be a downer or hold-up for the rest of the group... I'm learning to work
with the OCD, but I don't want to push it - anyhow, that's another issue for
another day - count me in if the specifics are per above.)
Thanks!
-Pete

Now that we are getting to collecting Milkweed for the War
Effort, we as students in school, in the fall of the year collected the pods,
that is not what we called them. I have forgotten what is was. In any case, our
school was a collection station and we had contests on what class would collect
the most. We walked along the road out of the city and in the fields to collect
the milkweed pods. That was a lifetime ago.

Mike Bliss spaketh thusly:

I have done the Milkweed fly. But Kapok is actually I
think
something way different. As I remember it comes from a
tree.

Mike, you're right on. They gathered milkweed seeds to
replace
kapok during Archie Bunker's BIG War (WWII) when Kapok was
unavailable. Memory says it came from the Phillipines
which wer
under Japanese occupation. At least that is what we were
told at the
time.

Hm. Wikipedia (can you believe something anyone can
edit?) says
that Kapok is native to Mexico and Central AMerica. Then
they show
pictures of kapok trees in Haaii and India.

The milkweed collection was probably because they could not
get
enough kapok. I was too young to be involved but my
brother decided
he was going to get rich - I think you could get $10 for a
pound of
milkweed seeds. But I think a pound of milkweed seeds
would be about
4 or 5 bushels and he rapidly found that there was not that
much
milkweed in the county.

Thanks for resurrecting memories.

again we talkin' a J.P. hook...one pic is wiff flash and one is wiffout.
Body of this fly is with the new Mega Semi-Seal by Arizona Dubbingand
has five turns of antigue flat embossed gold tinsel in it...a bit hard to
see because of the size of the collar.lol. i got a thing for BIG FAT
COLLARS.ask my shrink ROTFLMAO..but you can see the body just
fine with the fly in your hand.along with the big fat butt it has, lmao.
Butt is a real nice Copper Brownish Ostrich herl..bout 8/9 turns.
Bootie on this fly came out Killin'. the lower body is a varigated thread that
changes colors every couple inches..i've got 3/4 different spools (bobbins
to be technically correct) of it, in different color combinations..got it
from Walmart. extended tag.(sounds cool don't it? lmao), is antique flat
embossed silver tinsel.head is dyed Yellow and Orange as is the eye. Eye is
the good stuff (gut) from Partridge. Same as on the other fly on the Pilgaard
hook.

[VFB] Re: J.P. hook

2009-10-12 Thread Mark Romero

Chuck, that's not that expensive...the most i've ever paid for a single
hook is $40.but i have plenty of hooks i could get $50 or more for,
right now tonight (Buy it NOW on ebay).believe me, there's a huge market
out there for Reinhold, Lucas Sr., Sunday, Smith, and Pilgaard
hooks..i've got dozens and dozens of them.but i tye on them little
by little because they are hard to find and VERY expensive. For every half
dozen to a dozen flies i do on ordianariy (priced made) hooks, i do one on a
collectors item hook. The reason they are so expensive is at least two-fold.
Either the maker is no longer making hooks, as is the case with Ron Reinhold or
is dead, as is the case with Eugene Sunday.and then the fact that the hooks
Ronn Lucas Sr. makes and Jens Pilgaard makes are ONLY made by them and no one
else in the world can do them, and they are made one at a time by hand. It's
very labor intensive and there are many steps in the process. And they are
the best in the world.and you cannot find them in stores.you have to
know where to get them and how to get them.which is no big secret.but
do you know? What i mean is it's a little society of it's own in a manor of
speakin'so you have to be aware of the in's and out's and sometimes how
and when and where to find them at a savings if at all
possible..auctions and things. Especially in the case of the Reinhold's
and Sunday's and Smith'sonly certain people around the country deal in them
and have access to estates when the times come to where they can get ahold of
them when a Salmon fly tyer dies, etc. i've been collecting them for years now.
Buying them every chance i get and can afford to. Hope that answers you
guestion.

[VFB] Re: Streamo fly.....

2009-10-12 Thread Mark Romero

Patrick, they are quite difficult to tye on in terms of the added challange
they present to the tyer.you have to move them around in the vise to
different angles in order to access the shanks decently, and of course you also
have to adjust your thinking for various reasons...one of which is not
the least important being, remembering to watch you don't nik the thread on the
point of the hook because your not used to the point being where it is. Jens
hooks are so unorthadox that he even has some that have the barb (as in one i
posted) on the outside of the point area instead of the inside..i wish
you could see his other work someday.it's like nothin' you've EVER
seen, unless you've been in Europe in the summer time and gone to the Vicking
shows. etc. Jens makes knives, swords, and all kinna armor and weapons of all
kinds...and the stuff is UNBELIEVABLE in it's beauty and intricacy and
the materials he uses and the designs he puts in them and on and onit's
really somethin' you gotta see to believe. And he does these Vicking shows all
over Europe in the summer time..he's a WILD Cat. Stone Cold
Master...when you see his stuff.your eyes will totally BUG OUT!
It's simply UNREAL beautiful...

I'll send ya that offlist. reason I said the pink is because my Pink Panfish
Producer has caught us well over 3,000 bluegills per season, for the last four
years, then we only caught about 800 on it this year, but only cause we only
fished a few times. I don't know what it is about pink, but the bluegills LOVE
it. I also have ppl who bass fish (as in big lures and spinning reels etc) who
we have given these flies too. They put them on their casting reels, along with
a little piece of split shot and came back wanting to buy more flies, cause
they said that they caught bass good as well. I personally have caught a 4
pound plus bass on one of them (see attached pic) and it was only about a size
12 LOL. I've also caught a lot of the 3/4-1 pound size like the one in the
other pic. Both were released unharmed. I hope to recatch that one when he's 6
pounds or bigger LOL..Chuck

Same as on the other fly on the Pilgaard
hook.

[VFB] Re: J.P. hook

2009-10-12 Thread Mark Romero

there is no hook making machine on earth that can do what can be done by
hand...don't go like that. Fine finishes, (Japanesd or other wise),
fine barbs, points and cutterssimply cannot be reproduced by
machine...not to mention the tapers and bends...see, when you look
at a blind eye hook.that's all you see. a blind eye
hook.but when i look at a blind eye hook or anyone who has developed an
eye for such things.we see so much more. there are dozens of different
bend styles and tapers and point/barb/cutter styles and the finishes are
different from maker to makerso you have to put in the time to be able
to make these distinctions...and also if you collect Salmon flies tyed
on blind eye hooks as i do.you also become a conisoure(sp?)like
the same deal with fine wine.or antique cars or whateveryou know
what your lookin' at.and like the Japanese, What Good Is.
