Sorry for all the intrusions (tests) this morning. Hopefully you'll enjoy my little poem. JIMMY D THE PURIST I fish with a Pflueger Pack Rod. He fishes with a Sage or a Scott. Doesn t make any difference to the fish that we caught. Fish don t care what rod we use and faced with a choice they d probably not choose. The purist fishes a Betty McNall or other perfect fly. I fish with a Black Ant or Elk Hair Caddis cause they re so easy to tie. Expand your horizons, that s where it s at , he says as he ties on a number 16 Claret Gnat. Don t be fishing those trash flies, my boy. Why don t you try a Ferret Faced Rob Roy. To go along with his game, I say I might try a Chauncey, or a Colorado King, or maybe a Coachman with the Royal Fan Wing. He s thinking, Another purist I ve found , when I mention that I love the Royal Blue Crown. He raises his eyebrows as he ponders all that. Then he ties on a pretty Brass Hat. I say a Royal Cubbage is also good, but sometimes I prefer a Fire Coachman Trude. He says to himself, A purist for sure, boy this is great. But when I tie on a Chernobyl Foam Ant, we both know he s taken my bait. A foam ant! Why would a purist like you stoop to something as trashy as that? he says as he removes his tattered old hat. I say with an evil glint in my eyes, Gotcha, my Friend. I m not a purist. I ll just fish my ants and Little foam flies. DonO, for my retirement gift, my board gave me a 7 ft Orvis Penns Creek 4 wt bamboo. Companion reel is an Orvis CFO II. I have a dozen or so fly reels, including a Tibor light Tail Water CL. Choosing between it and the CFO is a hard call but my first choice on my little bamboo is the CFO. Together they are a smooth working combo. He made me promise to fish it, so it will be a dry-fly only rod for those perfect sunny afternoons on Wyoming trout streams. No wet-fly beads will be dinging this baby. Now I need a classic reel to match such a rod, and the perfect dry fly 5 wt. flyline. Should I look for a light weight antique reel worthy of this reel seat? Any ideas? Are lines for bamboo rods different than lines for graphite rods? Underweight a line size? Overweight a size? Is there a bamboo taper dry-fly line? And then I need an early spring and some hatches. [VFB] Current tying - photos
Hi VFB, I am preparing sample teaching flies for a class I am leading at next week's Central Oregon Flyfishers Winter Fly Tying series. The group meets weekly, numbering 15-25 participants each session. Members pay just $5, and most materials are supplied for the three hour class. Noted area fly tyers teach one each of the weekly sessions. The basic pattern was originated by British Columbia tyer Phil Rowley. The first fly visible in the Picasa gallery is closest to the original, though still a variant. In the others, the pattern has been converted to a system fly with different colors of Mohair yarn, sparkle dubbing, dyed Pheasant Rump, and dyed Peacock sword and herl. The fly slims down into a leech shape when wet, and mimics leeches, dragonfly nymphs and minnows. Flies aren't always the best way to approach a fish. I'm probably 80-20 flies. I go on a long weekend trip w/ a couple of friends of mine each spring fall, w/ three people in a boat, shorter rods are required. I use a baitcasting reel to troll crankbaits an ultralight rig for inline spinners on 4 lb mono for those trips, otherwise I use fly gear. I've kept all my standard fly fishing gear for friends kids to use where fly rods are difficult to cast.
