RE: [VFB] Fishing

2012-08-13 Thread Webb, Gary
Jimmy your story about an Ambassador 5000 reminded me of one I found for my
Dad. He had always wanted one, but with a wife and six kids it was way
outside of the budget limits. I found a broken one at a garage sale a bought
it for $5.00. I about ABU's lifetime warranty for their Ambassador reels,
and I paid more for shipping and handling than I had for the reel. They were
true to their word, and it came back just like new. I gave it to him for
Father's Day and he was one surprised and happy man.

Tony, once years ago, when my Dad was a big catfishmerman, he hooked onto
something just below the dam. Pulled
it up and it was a beautiful red Ambassador 5000 reel and True Temper casting
rod. He used that thing for another 10-
20 years. I inherited it and still have it. It works, but after all the
reeling is a little wobbly. Right now, I have it hanging
on my wall. Still beautiful, but to sentimental to use a 60 year old Ambassador
any longer.

Got to go fishing with my son and his wife on Wed.
Big thunder storm was lurking so I took my time getting ready before carrying
a lightning rod out on the water.
After finally getting out I stared paddling my pontoon boat about 10 or 15
yards out, I looked down and both fly rods were gone. I looked back towards
shore and saw one sticking straight up. Went back and got it but was really
BUMMED. The one I lost was a Cortland Black
Diamond 9ft. 5wt. And a Scientific Anglers reel.

After getting my mind cleared I managed to get 4 small mouthed bass on a
 mosquito.

Tried getting down with a sink tip and a wooly worm, but no luck.
Stuck with what was working and got two on two casts.

The water was like glass after the storm blew over.

I've got to find a way to secure fly rods so I don't loose any more. Down to
 11 now.

 Thank you,

 Alan Di Somma

rattler gliding across the yard. They ran up and got me, and wouldn't ya
know it but the firing pin on my shotgun is broken, so I get my 22 magnum
pistol and go out there. I spot him, and you know how ppl are about telling
you the size of snakes. It's like telling you the size of the fish that got
away. But this was one of the Eastern Diamondbacks you see on the TV shows,
as in over 5ft long, and bigger than my forearm. But the weird thing is,
even after I shot (and missed 3 out of 5 times, cause it's hard to hit a
snake with an old revolver at 15 yards, cause that was as close as I was
getting LOL). Anyway, through all that, he NEVER ratted a single time. I
shot and missed. I shot again and hit him. He stopped dead in his tracks and
I thought I had heart shot him, cause I knew it was a body shot. I shot
again, and hit him again. (reason I know is cause after he had gone, I saw
the blood stains on the ground) He still didn't move. His tail was straight
up, and he had 7 or 8 rattles, each at least 3/4 across, but like I said,
they NEVER once rattled. I missed him three more times, and had one round
mis fire before he FINALLY started crawling off VERY SLOWLY. My son in law
had heard the shots and came down with his shotgun, and we went out into the
woods and hunted the snake for 30 minutes or so, but never saw him again.
Man, that really scared me knowing how close he was to my son and grand
daughter. He was a BEAUTIFUL snake as he had JUST shed his skin and his
colors and markings were really bright. But he'll be dead and beautiful if
I see him again and hopefully get more shots at him LOL. Anyway, if you live
anywhere that is snake country, this is a bad time of the year, so be on the
 lookout at all times. Chuck

Right now, I have it hanging
on my wall. Still beautiful, but to sentimental to use a 60 year old Ambassador
any longer.

couple of hours the fish stopped biting and we moved back to the first spot.
You guessed it, one of the fisherman on the boat hooked into something. It was
the rod that was dropped overboard. That is one in a lifetime chance.

Down to
 11 now.

 Thank you,

Jimmy your story about an Ambassador 5000 reminded me of one  I found for my
Dad.  He had always  wanted one, but with a wife and six kids it was way
outside of the budget limits.  I found a broken one at a garage sale a bought
it for $5.00.   I about ABU’s  lifetime warranty for their Ambassador reels,
and  I paid more for shipping and handling than I had for the reel. They were
true to their word, and it came back just like new. I gave it to him for
Father’s Day and he was one surprised and happy man.
Thanks Jimmy, and Tony

Re: [VFB] Grappling Hook

2012-08-13 Thread Scott Bearden
Personally I would try rare earth magnets. They will probably only latch on
to the guides since they are steel underneath (unless it has those Recoil
guides), but their gripping power is amazing. If you have any old hard
drives laying around inside lies one of the most powerful magnets you could
ever hope for. It is the same concept as a mechanic's wand with the magnet
on the tip to retrieve tools and parts that fell an engine bay or something
like a 55 gallon drum of oil.

Tony we were out of the #8 LO58 Eagle Claws at the Shop had most every
other type and size though. I did some hunting through my stuff I have
about half a pack maybe a bit more of the #8's if you still need them. Drop
me a address and I will get them off to you.
I'll let you know when we get more in at the store if you are still having
 a hard time finding them.

Chuck,
I think it is an added feature. For a wider Froggie, just cut your foam wider.
I have tyed some on a # 16 3X hook and cut the foam down to 1/16 and on # 2
hooks cutting 3/16 thick foam 1/4 wide.

The recipe is also on that website.

Re: [VFB] Bass Froggie

2012-08-13 Thread Anthony Spezio
It is basically a strip of foam tied in just behind the hook eye and then
folded back and tied off at the tail. Tie in a couple of saddle feathers then
the foam. Fold one side of the foam back then the other side and tie off. This
forms the body. A couple of quilt pins for the eyes and you have it. You can
color it or use colored foam. Black is good for dark days.
