[VFB] re: skinning mallard question

2012-10-16 Thread Joyce Westphal
I just received a mallard and a teal duck..the meat of the breasts was
taken out, but the head, legs and wings are still on the birds. I want to
finish skinning them but have not dealt with ducks before. I question how
best to get out the wing bones and meat while saving the feathers, is there
a best way? Also how about the head..the bill is still on it as well. Do I
slit it under the neck or from the top of the head and attempt to remove
the skul with the bill? How about the legs..slit down the front and remove
the feet? Inquiring minds would like to know how to best save every feather
of these birds. When they are completely skinned, I'm planning to bury
them in Borax for a time until the skin is all dried out. I await advice.
Thanks. Joyce

Re: [VFB] selling flies now old time tying

2012-10-16 Thread Anthony Spezio
Bob,
I know what you mean. My wife, her mother and grandmother were quilters.
When we moved, we had plastic tubs full of material. My wife worked in a Fabric
Shop for about 6 years.
She can't quilt anymore so most of the fabric was given away to whoever asked
for it.

I have been tying for over 40 years I started early 9 or 10, started fly
fishing when I was 8  So I been at for awhile and I still have a ways to go to
be 60!!  I am going to have live to be at least 120 to put a dent in my
material stash!!!  It is almost as bad as my wife's fabric stash she is a
quilter anyone is married to one knows what that is like!!!

p.s.,

Bob, all that really means is that you've been tying longer than I have.  I
started at what I thought at the time was rather late in life.  Over 30 years
ago!!  ;-)
a.

That really DOES date you.  And I thought I was getting myself 'dated' when I
found some stuff from a fly shop that closed in 1985.

This has gotten me to rummage thru some of my old materials.  Found packs of
jungle cock 2X 24 in each pack for 0.30 cents each now I know I dated my
self
