[VFB] Re: SALTWATER SWAP ARRIVALS

2015-11-04 Thread Bob Hendry
Hi Peggy,

I am sorry that my flies haven't arrived yet; it seems they never reached
you. The mail man delivered them to me today!

They were mailed Wednesday, two weeks ago today. They suffered a severe
mishap while in the postal system. The soap box that I mail them in was
crushed beyond recognition. The note that was attached said that the
package was discovered when a heavy load on a pallet was moved. The outer
envelope was shredded, but she was able to tape the return envelope
together, and return it to me. (BTW, only 2 flies were in the package,
both damaged pretty badly.)

I can start re-tying this evening and have them ready to mail again by
Friday at the latest. That is if y'all are willing to hang loose for
another week. If not, please let me know. Thanks.

Also, I tied Clouser's Deep Minnow in black & red. Think I'll do 'em in
the more traditional chartreuse & white this go-around

Cheers,

*Bob Hendry*

Yes. In fact, I have a number of rolling pins that I made myself.
Including an ornamental huge pin made out of figured maple. I have a
french pin in maple and a long straight pin (no handles) in lacewood, as
well as a couple smaller ones. The only one that gets used on a regular
basis is the long straight one (about 40 cm long, 5 cm diameter); used
primarily for rolling pie dough. I also have a very long, thin straight
one (2.5 cm / 1 inch diameter) for rolling pasta in brazilian rosewood.

and #2 would you buy one

Well, obviously, no, since I make my own, but if I didn't have a lathe,
yes I would certainly buy one or more rolling pins. But then, I do a
fair amount of baking, and a whole lot of cooking...

if the price were right (probably $20 each
Actually, I think a good rolling pin, made out of nice wood, could fetch
more than that.
, but they last forever, for the ones made of common woods like oak,
poplar
Oak, given its porous nature, would be a bad choice for a rolling pin, I
would think, as would poplar (soft, porous, too light). I would favour
the standards like maple, beech, or walnut.

Another nice little thingie that you can make on the lathe, that would
be perfect to sell at an 'introductory' price level is a 'spurtle'
(google that ;-) ), preferably with the traditional stylized Scottish
thistlehead on top. A few burned rings at the 'grip' section would give
'em character.

Re: [VFB] QFTD

2015-11-04 Thread Jack Harford
Excellent Points Don!! Sometimes I think that with all the reasons why the
fish don't bite it is a wonder that any fish at all catch our flies. And
your points reinforce the premise that fish have certain instinctual traits
built into their character and behavior that effect how, when, and how much
they feed.

Here is Indiana, maybe about 90% of my fishing is done between 7pm and too
dark to see the fly. Partially because of my job, but mostly because of the
experience of landing about 80% of the fish during that time. It is also
nice that there is a nice smallmouth bass creek two blocks from the home.
Mornings are good too, but I am not much of a morning person :)

But again, like Don was saying, each species and even each fish is
different so the knowledge base is almost infinite. That may be one of the
attractions of this sport. There is always something more to learn. The
possibility of a fish catching the fly increases with the number of casts,
time on the water, attention to detail, and amount learned while out there
(and in the library too).

tight lines,
Jack

I am sure it has happened to all of us. You tye a dozen flies at the same tile.
All are the same pattern. Tye one on and smash the fish one after another.
Break off and tye on another one and the fish will not touch it. Try another
and you start catching fish again. Also you might be catching fish on a fly in
the morning and then you go out in the evening and they will not touch it.Tony

Excellent Points Don!! Sometimes I think that with all the reasons why the
fish don't bite it is a wonder that any fish at all catch our flies. And your
points reinforce the premise that fish have certain instinctual traits built
into their character and behavior that effect how, when, and how much they
feed.
Here is Indiana, maybe about 90% of my fishing is done between 7pm and too dark
to see the fly. Partially because of my job, but mostly because of the
experience of landing about 80% of the fish during that time. It is also nice
that there is a nice smallmouth bass creek two blocks from the home. Mornings
are good too, but I am not much of a morning person :)
But again, like Don was saying, each species and even each fish is different so
the knowledge base is almost infinite. That may be one of the attractions of
this sport. There is always something more to learn.  The possibility of a fish
catching the fly increases with the number of casts, time on the water,
attention to detail, and amount learned while out there (and in the library
too).
