Re: [VFB] RE:Nor Vise

2016-05-13 Thread Joyce M Westphal
It is a good deal. There is a saying, that it takes 100 times of a new
experience to have it conquered.. Start with simple flies, like gold ribbed
hare's ears, Czech nymphs, and then work on to salt water flies that you
usually tie. Every fly, think, how can I make this vise work for me and how
do I use the rotary fashion best. Be sure to look,at Norm's CD and go
online to his web page and view the flies tied there. I was comfortable
with this vise after an order for 100 flies and honestly think I could no
longer tie with a regular vise. When I go to tying classes and forums, I
find that dubbing is a breeze, ribbing is fast and even and I watch others
struggle, even those who've tied a lot, to get these two things done well.
Enjoy. Joyce

Oh, by the way, purchased the saltwater jaw nor vise with three Nor bobbins and
six spools $215.00.  I think it was a pretty good deal, even purchasing the
standard jaws separately, I still got a better/cheaper deal the the basic setup
on line.

Hi Alan;

Placed an order for the standard jaws this morning.  Norm emailed me about it,
I explained that I have the saltwater jaws and he made sure I ordered the
correct stuff for the standard setup.

My favorite equipment catch was many years ago (in the early 1960's)
when I first started fishing using a bait caster. I still have the old
Abu Garcia reel and it works as smoothly as ever. Back to the story.
The fellow who got me into fishing took me to a nearby lake and was
teaching me how to cast properly (I never did learn). I hooked a nice
bass and apparently hadn't done a good job of tying on my favorite lure
- it broke off. Fortunately I had another one. In fact at that time I
probably only owned 1/2 dozen lures.

A couple of weeks later my "mentor" took me back to the same lake. By
that time I had practiced my knots. I hooked another nice fish in the
same area. This time I was more careful fighting it and made sure it
didn't break off this time. It was about a 3-4 pounderwith both
lures in his mouth!!

[VFB] RE:Nor Vise

2016-05-13 Thread 'Wayne Blake-Hedges' via VFB Mail
Hi All;

Received my Nor vise yesterday,  bolted it to my tying bench, loaded a couple
spools with thread and preceded to give it a go.
It definitely takes some getting used to.  Mine came with the saltwater jaws a
bit of a pia to get used to and hard to get anything less than a size 6
streamer hook to hold(standard jaws on the way).  Also a bit of a learning
curve for the Nor bobbins.

Any suggestions on what to tie with the larger jaws?

Thanks in advance;

Wayneb
