Hi Guys,

I can't remember ever using this forum but I'm testing it out to see if this 
post comes through. I took a very long break from tying publicly, I stepped 
back from the Whting team to work on my degree. A few of you were so 
encouraging and supportive of me while I worked my way through school. THANK 
YOU!!!  I still tie for my own fishing and fun but not as much as I would like 
to. I'm in a different pond now than I was used to so I'm adjusting to that 
also. I miss the salt water. I spend more time tying Hans CDC Elk hair caddis 
flies and timy trout flies... WOW what a change for me.  I finally have a new 
desk to set up and hopefully make a more comfortable place to tie for my self 
than out of boxes. I wanted to reach out and see how Don O was doing. He's been 
on my mind.  I've kept in touch with a few of you but I have stepped very far 
back from public tying while I put myself through school and joined the working 
world. Now I finally have some time for myself again and I have been thinking 
about so many of my friends that I haven't been able to keep in touch with as 
much as I would like to .For those of you who knew me you will remember me as 
Deb Duran. 

I hope all of you are well. Tony, I still love my froggies!!! I have read some 
updates on you and I hope all is going well for you this holiday.

I've never lost touch with Peggy and I look forward to seeing you and Jerry 
this spring again.

Now with any luck this will post. Happy Holidays to you all.

I have a 7wt 2 piece Tiger Eye Blank that I'm thinking about building and am 
sorting through some of the different fly rod guides out there.

 

Has anyone used the Snake Brand Universal guides?   The talk about them seems 
to be good, but they are more expensive? Or how about Hook and Hackle guides or 
Pac Bay?

 

I have seen a recommendation to use no more than 2 sizes of guides on a rod and 
other recommendations for as many as 5 different sizes on a 9 ft. rod. What do 
you think??

 

And the sizes seem to be different for each brand, for example Snake Brand #1 
is 4.44 mm and Hookhack and Pac Bay are 5.1mm.  

 

Is larger or smaller better or just different??

It wasn't hard to tell that he had gotten the origin of the Stimulator pics 
right so I replied and verified his guess... and a few minutes later Jerry did 
the same. I haven't seen anything from Ted yet (but it doesn't have to mean 
more than that I wasn't a CC in his reply). But comparing the egg SBS's I'm 
sure it's the same thing there (since his also includes both more and larger 
pictures). They have already made the pictures for me... all I need to do is 
the writing.

 

Is it so damn hard to ask... or at least include a link to the actual 
originator?

 

That's how much fishermen family is worth... when you can't trust your own 
brothers. :(

A rotary vise is useless for winding parachute hackles. The swivel hackle 
pliers is the way to go on them. That is all I have used for about 25 years.

BTW, the poppers are finished and you can pick them up at the Sowbug.

I have some, rarely use them, but don't usually use this kind of hackle pliers 
tip as I find  it breaks the hackle more often than the standard pliers tips

I think they are, Alan. The knurled handle rotates, there is a rotating joint 
from the metal to the rubber section, and the rubber section is a hinge. I’ve 
had mine for 15 yrs (I tie a *lot*) and this year the pads for the index finger 
and thumb are showing signs of wear. Otherwise – great. One other thing: they 
have a nice heft to them. You could hackle a fly halfway, do some honey-dos ant 
three days later J continue the hackle where you left off.

I have one of their bobbins and I use it almost exclusively.

It was very expensive but I believe it is well worth it because I use it so 
much and feels good while you are using it.

other has a 4 1/2” handle with a built in half hitch tool on the end of the 
handle. Guess it’s the only way I can find out of they are my cup of tea or 
not. My Daddy did a lot of mechanic work his whole life and he used to tell me 
“Son, you can’t have too many tools” LOL.. Guess I’ll find out if he was right. 
In my mechanics tool box and my tool shed, most tools I own I hardly ever use ,

It is a new dock since you were here. In fact it is the third dock we have
had. The first a tornado got it. The second a 70 foot maple tree fell on it
and crushed it. This one so far has been the best one.

Do you remember the pair of waders we found floating in the river when we
took the boat out. Well I got them dried out and loaned them to a friend.
They leaked like a sieve, I still have the box of flies that were in the
chest pocket. The hooks are rusted.

That was Dave Lewis. I have a rod built by him. That rod was waiting for me
at Tony's home when I attended the Sowbug.
I went nomail for 2 yrs and when I returned I heard that he had passed away.
Dave posted great stories and photos of beautiful fish from small streams he
caught with his Tweeter caddis made from dubbing he harvested from his cat.

I thought so.  I haven't signed in to FF@ for many years.  If I remember
correctly Donna organized a March Madness swap or something like that.  I
signed off FF@ after my son was injured in an accident which would be 5

passed away.

Well, I’m glad that I did not spoil it for other European tiers ;-)

I knew that I was the exotic element among the tiers so I decided to bring 
something that perhaps some people hadn’t seen yet: CDC. 

Because I did not want to have to look through my CDC bags each time I tied a 
fly, I decided to sort the CDC feathers by size: 24 bigger ones for the wings 
and 24 smaller ones for the body, in 2 colors each. 

And just when I wanted to tie the first fly, these big ceiling fans that I 
hadn’t noticed switched on...
