fun, you hear!  Take care and tell Tony and the gang that Jimmy D, DonO and

Great Day in the Morning ! Wonder how many peacock feathers it took to make the
dress, and how
much the total cost was.  That thing would keep the entire VFB in feathers for
a year. Probably take
a John Deere tractor hooked to a rope around her waist, to help her move
forward. :-D

Now, I have a Question.  All of us use peacock herl in making fly bodys, etc.
but how do ya'll use
the rest of the feather. This is a Dumb question I know, but I don't know the
answer.  And, as ya'll
know, this Ole Texan ain't bashful.

Bob,
Me again, We need the lurkers to post to let us know you are out there. If no
one posts the list will die a slow death. I am on two other tying lists and
there are only about one message about every three to four months. When someone
posts something, the list awakens and there will be several posts for a few
days then dies again. You lurkers out there, find somethoing to post and let us
know you are there.
Thanks,

Hello you All

Wouldn't it be Jimmy (Mud Hole Lunkers) or some such to dredge me out of the
reeds?
I'm not gonna tell anyone about lurking, skulking, poaching or the like, but
I've got my fair share of the value of you old bunch of smelly waders.

Jimmy, who has defended me against the worst of them.
Don, telling me about dental floss and them big ass flies.
Tony, and all his words of wisdom (still haven't built it.) your chili
Pepper caught my youngest, Emma a real corker, it did!
Don (again) your ode to Emma will never release me. Do YOU remember that one?
Nick, how far you have come, my friend, a true doien to the cult, what issit,
three now?? Ankle biters, I mean hahahaaha, to Theresa my regards.
Kieth, never made that second trip to Germany, but you knew or expected that,
didn't you?
Ruven.. you still here, not seen you in a bit.
Pete Gramp ??? I feel you buddy.

Apologies to anyone I may not have mentioned, tis not intentional, I
swear. Remind me and you are in my heart still. Oh, I'll mention you too. tee
hee.

I am happy to still be a member, although not a "dues dunner" (who was that?)
so nail me to the wall Byard always treated me well. and still get your
chat every day. Damn, its good to be reminded of happier days. When a trip to
Lesotho was the highlight of the year!  No Jimmy not for Bucket mouths!

I lament at the state of the VFB, and no thanks to me for not contributing, my
head hangs in shame. Excuses are the apologies for those not worthy of mention.

HOWEVER

I salute you, the stalwarts of the fraternity. YOU have kept the course, the
passion and the faith. I, for one, am eternally grateful for the freethinking
inspiration you have so graciously poured over us.

Thank you, my distant friends

After the 1st of the year, when things settle down, who is interested in the
Second VFB Rope-Dub Contest/Swap?

Since I did it the 1st time around, I could meister it, appoint a judge or
panel, select the winners, who would win
a 14/0 Fantasy Fly (rear-view mirror hanger), and second place again would be a

I like the video and the comments that go with it.
I think my largest problem is not using enough dubbing to go on the thread.
Still working on it and starting to get better at that part.
Also a few of the dubbings are not as easy to use, but that will come.
Don , Do you just loop the fishing line twice before you tie off or am I

Subject: [VFB] Re: DVD update

I've been saving all emails requesting the DVD in a file pocket.  I'll refer to
these when I put the list together.  If you signed up earlier, I'll use that
for your number.  If you select a #, I'll reserve it for you.  If I missed you,
I'll get you signed up.

I'm not sure about payments, as I had problems with paypal when I used it for
selling Fantasy Flies a while back.  They were double-billing and would not
make it right, so I had to make the refunds. I dumped them.  Now I take checks
and am doing just fine that way.  I've actually had time to tie up a number of
them for customers recently.  Working on a 19/0 pattern for a long-time family
friend, too.

So, for this initial run, if you want to send a check, please do.  But I prefer
you wait until I have the DVDs ready in my hands, if you know what I mean. Your
email will hold your order and SN..

I also intend to sell them also from the Platte River Fly Shop here in Casper-
http://www.wyomingflyfishing.com/.
He will charge me a %-age for handling sales and the $-transaction.  Again,
that portion on his site is not up yet, due to I ain't got 'em done yet (and
he's been bugging me too to get them done).  He'll be able to process orders
and electronic payments.

He also sells my Fantasy Flies- again, when I have some for him to sell.  LOL
Trust me- Fantasy Flies are not a high-volume sort of sale, like commercial
fishing flies or t-shirts.  Buggs calls them "Rare and Unusual"- like the
tier.  LOL

Your refering to Mr. Tom Schmucker(sp?), a VERY VERY nice man. He and his
wife Ann, took Misako and i out to lunch one time, after we had had "the tour"
of the Wapsi plantplant for lack of a better word. The place is
amazing...totally amazing. It's the biggest fly tyin' materials
operation in the world. Every tyer should take "the tour" at least once. You
learn a lot. And Tom and Ann are so sweet. Misako won the framed Green
Highlander that Tom tyed and donated for the Ladies Lunchen at Conclave here a
week ago.
Fishin' here IS unreal in terms of both cold and warm water species all in one
place.
All the Wapsi kids but one are in the business as well.they were all good
friends of Charles Barton too.

Oh, and the guy who owns Wapsi. The reason he set up shop in Mt. Home Arkansas,
is that he took out a map, took a compass, and found a place in the US that had
within either a 50 or 100 mile radius (I forget the exact mileage) that had THE
best fishing in the US (in his opinion) and that turned out to be Mountain
Home. True story. Chuck

not without alerting intercepting predators or prey of its owner's location and

footprints.'  The size of a wake depends on the size of the fish but its
morphology varies by species.  If 'fish footprints' are indeed unique to
species, and if they can be recognized and used to advantage by conspecifics or
predator, they might better be named 'fish fingerprints.'"

I think that I will start my own blacklist and will not particpate in swaps or
will withdraw from swaps if someone on my blacklist is part of the swap.

Most of the culprits just do not communicate. Presumably they are too
embarrased to do so. They get all enthused when a swap is announced and submit
their name but do not check their other obligations, or more likey lose
intertest in the swap over time.

Even if you are ill, you should still be able to get a message out. The only
exception is if the person drops dead from a heart attack.

Know the feeling. I just hosted a tiny fly swap here in Sweden. We were twelve
tiers but it turned out to be ten flies... with five "reserves" who had seen
the announcement too late, but were standing in line to jump in.
One envelope came in with a big hole in it... flies lost. But as he was eager
to tie new ones, we agreed to push the due date a week for him to be able to do
his best and not his quickest.
This gave the two no-shows another week too... and I called them both, since
they didn't answer my PM's on the forum. The one I reached said that he had
forgotten about them and was "going to mail them tonight... tomorrow at the
latest". The PLANNED extra week passed and, due to factors preventing me to do
"my stuff" with pictures and sorting, so did another week.

I mailed them today, three weeks later than planned. The one I didn't reached
is still not to be reached. The one who said he was going to mail his flies
three weeks ago hasn't said a word since... and if they had just SAID that
their flies weren't coming, it wouldn't have been a problem filling both
places... having five people waiting with three weeks to tie.

Preventing people from participating... and making the other tiers spending
extra hours behind the vise (the size range on the flies tied in this swap
was #24-32... not five minute-flies to quite a few, who before this swap hadn't
tied smaller than #20).

They will be reminded about this if they show interest in future swaps of mine.

/Nick

There are several different machines/tools out there. Mine is the original

Hi VFB!

A quickee question.  You might know of the fly tying tool that makes thin
twisted-wire brushes of various materials. The finished material looks like a
chenille, but has a twisted-wire core.

What do you call the tool that makes these?  Anybody got a picture link?

I thinkk that that makes tying them very inexpensive.

"Most people say that tying flies to save money is a fallacy. What do you think?

"Well, I have sort of a different take on that.  I tell most people it'll cost
them $350 to $400 to really get into fly tying.  That's tools, materials-
everything you need to tie flies for fishing.  That might seem like a bunch of
money, but compared to the price of a lot of rods and reels, that's not bad.
And for that money, I point out that they'll be getting a whole lot of flies in
return.  If you're smart about it, and you fish a lot, tying your own flies is
a pretty good deal.'"

If you are on a pond and see a alrge number or rises or the rings from the
rises, but you are not catching any fish, it is time for midges.

Fish an unwieghted or very light weighetted midge.  Fish are taking them just
under the surface and the tails are making the ring.

"There are times when the promise of fast, furious action - and especially, the
promise of big fish - eclipses aesthetic concerns. Then you happily stand
elbow-to-elbow with your fellow anglers.  And because they're fly fishermen,
chances are they're pretty good guys."

"I couldn't tell which brand of caddis they might be, and didn't take time to
collect any - one gets into these choices, when the travel schedule is a bit
heavy and the fishing time is a bit short, between the desire to collect the
insects upon which trout are feeding, or the conflicting desire to collect a
tithe of the trout that are feeding on the insects, based on a guess about what
the insects might be, and an estimation about which fly might match them."

"FISHING HAS A REPUTATION as an innocuous, fairly mindless pastime enjoyed most
by shiftless people. Perhaps that impression would be lessened if nonfishers
understood more about wild water. Calling fishing a hobby is like calling brain
surgery a job. The average visitor driving through Yellowstone sees no farther
than the surface of the water. At best the lakes and streams are mirrors
reflecting the surrounding scenery. For the alert fisherman, especially the fly
fisherman, the surface is not a mirror but a window. "
