Try Corn Huskers lotion. Works well for softening hands for tying

I hope it works as well for you as it does for me. There is also Danville's
wine, but I don't really like Danville's thread. Pete, if you send me your
name and address, and I find a spool of UTC at my Sportsman's Warehouse, I
can ship it to you. I have to go in later today and I'll see if they have
some. It goes quickly as wine is the "new color" so often it is not in
stock. I expect it is also available on the web. Joyce

I'll check out the UTC, sounds perfect. I haven't tried it yet. I have to
be honest, most of the reason I shy away from tying salmon flies is that my
rough hands tear the silk to shredded frayed messes. I think I'll try the
UTC but stay clear of the silk thread - just my personal preference, not
that it is a bad suggestion in any means, I'm sure it would be perfect, but
with my sandpaper mitts, and knowing what silk thread costs *typically*,
I'd prefer to not even try it. Just my preference, no offense intended.
Thanks for the UTC suggestion, I'm going to pick up a spool and try it!

Re: [VFB] Burgundy Thread

2016-07-02 Thread Joyce M Westphal
Pete, have you tried UTC ultra in 70 denier in wine? It is awesome IMHO,
lies flat and makes a wonderful body, comes in 70 and 140 and 210 denier. I
buy it at the local fly shop. You might also like silk which comes in
color 312 and can be found at Superior Threads (St. George, UT) and
available online. It makes a great silk thread body. Check these out.
Ultra costs about 2.00 a spool but has lots of thread, I believe 200 yards,
on a spool. Good luck. These are my favorites. Joyce

[VFB] Burgundy Thread

2016-07-01 Thread Pete Gramp
I've been looking for a Burgundy thread that is *either* 70 denier *or* lies
flat with minimal bulk. I typically use Uni 8/0 or Veevus, if that helps
any, but I'm not loyal to any one brand over another. Cheaper the better,
yes even though we're only talking about a few bucks a spool, but I'd
prefer tying thread to sewing thread... Can somebody point me towards
something in that color range? More of a maroon-burgundy than
wine-burgundy. (Danville has a wine, but that's too purple for what I'm
seeking).

Alternatively, anyone know of a marker (make & color) that would color
white uni or veevus to that color range?

Thanks guys,
-Pete
