Hi VFB!

Just returned from a local flyshop where I had a good talk with the
owner, Peter.  It seems that the price of bugger-quality saddle hackle
necks is skyrocketing.

Typical price increases are a plus $10 per neck, and Hareline
products, in particular, are getting hard to locate.

The reason behind the increases and scarcity is the long skinny saddle
hackles have become a trendy crafts item, and so that segment of the
market is buying up all the necks.

Sample:

I just budgeted a bunch of $$ to buy up as many remaining (now
bargain) bugger saddle hackle necks as I can manage.  Don't want to
spend over $40 for the new offerings.

2010-07-24 Thread Wes Wada
Hi Rodger,

I was lucky to have bought quite an assortment of colored grizzly
necks years ago, and I paid about $19 apiece for full necks.
Unfortunately, even white #3 grizzly necks are included in the coming
price increases. I dye and enjoy doing that, but if I can get a neck
already dyed at less than $30, that's going to look like a bargain in
a few months. Just bought some remaining stock of claret grizzly
necks at $14. There are three more hanging on the racks, and I am
looking to get those as well, if possible. Between companies
discontinuing items I like a lot (Gudebrod tying thread, Danville
Monocord, etc.) and raising prices, it's a major ouch!!

Wes,  Maybe it's time to break out the kool aid and participate in another
learning experience.  The price of feathers has always seemed prohibitive to
me.  I have to save my pennies forever to get decent feathers unless someone
takes pity and sends me some.  I kinda hate to go online and beg every time
 I need(think I need) something.
I haven't gone the kool aid route myself, but I have been reading and
 watching.

Check out http://eflytyer.com/new_stuff/ns_feathers.html, Mike Hogue. I've
dealt with him for years. I believe he also sells Collins hackle. I've
gotten some great soft hackle Chinese necks from him as well. Ewing hackle
co also has really good bugger hackle at reasonable prices and wonderful
colors. Joyce
