2017-01-01 Thread DonO
Pete, I had a Hank Roberts ‘Domino Nymph’ years ago, looked like the
black-topped white-bottomed flies you see here, but without any hackles.
Worked great in small Wyoming creeks.
I had the weave down at one time, but that was decades ago, would have to start
over. I tied them with a tapered lead wire front thorax underbody that I
squashed with a needle-nose, then wove over it. Not sure if that was what Hand
did, but the fly looked right and sank well in holes.
This may be what he was using, with or without the hackles. Don

Anyone ever hear of a pattern called a "Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy"?

Passed by my local pond and saw another fly fisher there (rare) just reeling
them in (very rare), hand over foot, thankfully catch and releasing or I'd need
to find myself a new local pond to fish - he was catching that many - but when
I stopped by to ask what he was using, he gave a sly grin and said an older
pattern called the "Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy". I shouldn't be as
surprised as I am, but seeing as it was a fellow who looked fresh out of
puberty, pimples and all, I was a bit surprised he was using an older pattern.
He never did let me get a look at the fly, so I'm on a "quest" of sorts, to
find a pattern recipe and example photo to get an idea of what the end product
should look like and how to tie it.

Thanks, gang, any help is appreciated!

 Hopefully these don't come
through as monstrously huge photos; I tried to size
appropriately, and I just hope I did an OK job of it.
 Credits for both
 photos go to www.fishandsave.com
 ,of which I have no contact info and know little about;
being as it is a product for sale, I consider it within the
public domain to be able to share these photos for
educational purposes only, herein, and I in no way claim
them as my own.  Now that that's out of the
 way...
 I found these
two photos by way of Google searches, and I'm quite
certain that these are the same fly pattern that the lad was
using.  Any guesses as to what the pattern recipe is,
exactly?  I can see a wood duck collar/ beard, ostrich-herl
rear half, and quill slip antennae (or whatever it is
considered to be, that is sticking out from the eye of the
hook).  Not sure what is under the herl, not sure of tail,
and not sure of front half of abdomen (looks woven, but of
what and how I can't tell).
Can anyone shed further light on
this?  Or give a "best guess"?(and
don't tell me to just use a size 16 GRHE...trust me,
 I've tried...haha)
 Thanks!-Pete.

[VFB] Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy?

2016-12-31 Thread Pete Gramp
Anyone ever hear of a pattern called a "Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy"?

Passed by my local pond and saw another fly fisher there (rare) just
reeling them in (very rare), hand over foot, thankfully catch and releasing
or I'd need to find myself a new local pond to fish - he was catching that
many - but when I stopped by to ask what he was using, he gave a sly grin
and said an older pattern called the "Hank Roberts White Gloved Howdy". I
shouldn't be as surprised as I am, but seeing as it was a fellow who looked
fresh out of puberty, pimples and all, I was a bit surprised he was using
an older pattern. He never did let me get a look at the fly, so I'm on a
"quest" of sorts, to find a pattern recipe and example photo to get an idea
of what the end product should look like and how to tie it.

Thanks, gang, any help is appreciated!
-Pete
