Can't say what the Bencside Introduction reveals... but the Benchside Reference
reveals no patterns... or recipes, if you want. It's a step-by-step book packed
with TECHNIQUES. One 'Wings'-chapter, one 'Bodies'-chapter etc etc... separate
moments. You simply cannot tie an entire fly using only one step-by-step.

Some people build houses while another group of people are supplying the bricks
for it.
Benchside Reference shows you how to make the bricks... a wide range of
different bricks

It's a book that digs really deep into fly-tying.

[VFB] Re: Nick.....

2009-11-08 Thread Niclas Runarsson
Now I remember what the Benchside Introduction was. I'ts the one Marvin
Nolte described to me when we tied in Finland... as a reeeally good beginner
book too. It is a pattern book... and a method book... both in the same
package (yep, spiral bound, though hard cover). The pages are cut in half,
kind of two books on top of eachother. A step-by-step of the FLY on the top
half, like the average step-by-step instruction... where the fly step on top
refer to a page in the lower half, breaking down the individual moments
further in deeper instructions (Benchside Reference type). Great way of
being able to cover many fly patterns and still do REALLY detailed
step-by-steps for each of them... without having to repeat the same
technique SBS in every fly tutorial it was used.

One can wonder... how many pages did they save by doing this. As I
understood Marvin, it had over 100 fly patterns. If each of those patterns
had a step-by-step for its steps... how many pages would that result in?

To me it sounds like a great introduction book.

[VFB] Re: Nick

2009-11-05 Thread Niclas Runarsson
With the Rolex syndrome, I don't mean that the only reason to own it is
'snob appeal'... and I don't look at a LAW tyer and think 'He's wasted some
money there'. The 'Rolex syndrome' I mentioned wasn't meant as 'flashy
syndrome'... just the practical way: A Rolex doesn't give you a better time
than any other watch. It might be a little more reliable than the $15 watch
you can buy in a petrol station... but you don't have to go up to more than
$200 to get a watch that is just as reliable.

But that point where money value takes off from practical value is a
relative one too. Chris Helm and I have discussed the Griffin Montana
Mongoose a lot and I share his opinion (quote): The Moosegoose should be
melted down and sold for scraps. It's the most unergonomical vise I've
tried myself and I have found several design flaws and it's not much of
precision work either. But I have several friends who love it. It's also
about the individual's own requirements... Where on the price ladder will
100% quality satisfaction be TO ME?

Then of course comfortability. If (only examples) the Barracuda, the Law and
the CF Reference share the same quality value and two guys have the same
quality requirements, I fully understand that Mr.X chose to pay more for the
LAW than for the Barracuda, if he feels more comfortable with it... and the
same thing if Mr.Y chose to pay even more for a CF, if that's what he feels
most comfortable with. Even if a Rolex won't give you a BETTER watch, it can
still be more comfortable to the individual than the one at the one that is
exactly as good but is much cheaper.

Hans W says it best: One man's dream is another man's nightmare.

There's no such thing as a best vise. I can imagine that a certain vise
can collect most quality points and win a quality contest... but since there
always be someone who favours another, it won't be the best.

NICK, I LOVED YOUR ANALOGY!

I feel the same about the LAW vice - only one reason to own it: Snob
Appeal. I prefer the cheapest good quality vise that is comfortable to me.
Which means many people find different vises most comfy. And that's good.
(For the economy)

The CF vise gives me a dentist or brain surgery tool impression... almost
a sterilized or scientific look. It's a vise that fits the clean bench of a
bacteriology professor (beside his electron microscope), not on a messy tying
bench with piles of hair patches and bird skins. Isnip A Barracuda or a Dingo
vise would almost make him look like the bacteriology professor student,
sitting at home doing his homework using something his father borrowed from his
work at Caterpillar Inc. LOL

BTW - Not putting this out on the list, but I may be incommunicado for a few
days - I have a sister in Louisiana (12-hour drive) whose body is shutting
down. Of course, only God can set the time frame on that. So I don't know
just when we'll be leaving.

cheers.
