[VFB] Re: Shipping flies
Depends on what customs office they hit. I wouldn't mislabel a package in today's climate. So when some inspectors see artificial fishing flies, they feel obligated to open the package and check for possible CITES violations. If they find a feather they'll request proper certification from the addressee, at a big price!!! Way too much hassle for me! cheers Paul On Jan 27, 12:38 am, Joyce Westphal westpha...@gmail.com wrote: Paul, what happens when you try to ship into the US? Inquiring minds wish to know. Thanks. Re: [VFB] Re: Shipping flies
I've been able to get flies overseas in my bank check-boxes by labeling them 'gifts' or 'craft supplies' - value $10. Another reason I like the check boxes is that I can send almost* any type of big fly- mice, deer-hair flies, big sculpins, poppers, also dries-without crushing the hackles. * I say almost...they don't make check-boxes for 14/0 to 19/0 hooks flies. Re: [VFB] Re: Shipping flies
I believe that one of the reasons I get my flies through customs with no problems is that the pattern with all the parts is on the card attached to the fly. The customs people know at a glance if there are any Cites violations. RE: [VFB] Re: Shipping flies
I agree, Ive had little problem with customs, my problem is having flies stolen by the post office, usually the British post office. I just posted Picric Acid dyed fly materials to the USA. Picric acid is an explosive compound both as crystal and liquid (google it) iain I believe that one of the reasons I get my flies through customs with no problems is that the pattern with all the parts is on the card attached to the fly. Paul, what happens when you try to ship into the US? Inquiring minds wish to know. Thanks. Then I stick the point of the fly in that cardboard. Next, using big plastic bags, I use a kitchen Oster food sealer to seal the fly and cardboard in a plastic envelope. They arrive in perfect shape just stuck in any foam padded or Priority mail box and are easy to sort and send on to each of the flytiers without the hassle of twisted toe tags and stuck together hooks. You don't need anything more..not even a box. I ship all over the world and they get through customs nicely as you can see what they are without the risk of someone opening up the box and spilling the flies..and, when you ship through customs, be sure to put how many flies you are sending. That seems to prevent the customs workers from helping themselves to a sample. Just my two cents worth on what works really well for me. It occurred to me that I needed to protect them in transit and so I found an old cheap fly box that I can live without. If this gets to be a habit I don't want to buy cheap fly boxes. For those of you that mail out dry flies routinely, what do you use that is cheap and disposable to protect them in transit?
