RE: [VFB] Must have missed the Tee shirt test

2020-03-31 Thread J Balmer
Once upon a time, in a land far ago & long away, we were wading Taneycomo. We
had just taken a lunch break because the dam was generating & came back to fish
the flooded grass as the water level was dropping, I had a large heavy olive
bugger on, trying for browns. Caught a couple small ones when the wind cam
tearing down the river valley. I started casting over my left shoulder as a
result & made one too many back casts, & my left elbow stopped the fly. Even w/
forceps, I couldn’t get the leverage to pull it out & because the skin on my
elbow was so tough, I couldn’t push it though either. I cut it off, retied &
fished the rest of the afternoon. When we got back to the hotel, I tried
pliers, no joy. Mike’s wife, who had trained as a nurse, couldn’t get it out
either. I finally was able to make an incision w/ the scalpel in my first aid
kit & push it far enough to cut the point off, barb was mashed down but
wouldn’t back out. I still have the fly, kept it as the one that caught a
turkey.

It did sting when it first went in. After that it didn't bother me.

Several years ago Susan my wife was with me when I got stuck.

The fly was buried. I asked her to help me get it out because I couldn't get a
good grip on it. She took one look at it and said: "I'm not touching that."

So today when I got home I showed her my finger with the fly still in it.

I knew what she would say: "I'm not helping with this one either."

We both laughed.
