Re: [VFB] I'll take the VFB list over any Forum

2010-01-29 Thread Don Ordes
MeddelandeI'm in agreement with most here, and Nick.

There are advantages for each system, and also chat rooms.

I rarely visit forums- too impersonal
I am only on one email list- this one.
I like chat rooms, but most are useless banter- not much about fishing and
flies.

I'll stick with this one (VFB) if it stays active.

There are advantages and hindsides with both. (Note: I'm not talking PC based
email software.)

Forums keep the topics organized while lists mix them all up together... but
on the other hand, a list lay them all up in front of you and you don't have to
look for or miss any new ones.

Forums save the information (without having to fill your own inbox/mail
folders) categorized for later and easy viewing (not having to look through
thousands of messages) and just as easily by new members... but on the other
hand, when a forum malfunctions or get hacked, a lot of it can easily get lost.

Forums are more visible to the public and generate more members... but on the
other hand, since they are more visible (and don't fill up mailboxes) they
attract more of the less serious members (including spam robots)

Forums let moderator teams clean up the mess... but on the other hand, lists
let the individual decide what actually is mess.

Forums keep the information separated from your private mail... but on the
other hand, you have to go somewhere else to read them

Forums makes it easier to not send offlist messages to the rest by mistake...
but on the other hand, lists increase the chance to see peoples mistakes. LOL

Forums post your message immediately while mails can get problems and take
hours... but on the other hand, if your girlfriend is downloading heavily and
the router fails, your long forum message will get lost when you post it
(grr), while your email software will keep it in the outbox until the
connection is up again.

But... lists give more of this intimate group feeling... the thing that
overrides the rest. :o)

I belong to three (3) forums. Neither of the 3 get much use, and they
have
just as many problems as the VFB. BTW, the Virtual Fly Box website
  appears to have been removed.

However, the Lines End Online Fly Shop is still operational at:

  http://linesend.com/

Back before we went with Google, there was a Forum available on the
VFB website. There was also a Chat Room. It was a late night deal
and not everyone like DonO, Allan and I are late Owls.

Byard has lots of good deals right now, and some close out prices on
  selected items.

Alright guys and gals, you got me out of lurk node.

I will finally come out of lurk mode and add to this discussion. I too agree
with most of the replies here. I am members of both forums and lists like
these, and both have their pluses and minuses. For me. I like the ease and
informality of lists like this over the forum set-up. Just so much more
personal and easy to use to me.

Even though I don't post much here, and don't participate in many of the fly
swaps, I read most of the messages posted. Well, maybe not most of them, but
some of them...well, OK you got me, maybe a few messages get past the reading
of the subject line, LOL. In all seriousness, I have learned a lot from this
group. I am sure I will continue to learn as more and more posts are made.

Not only do I learn about fly tying and fishing, which is great, I also gain
some insight as to who the members here are. That in itself is reason enough to
be a member here. Thanks guys, I feel as though I have friends from around the
world, from Sweden to South Africa, from Australia to England. From the USA,
and even from Kansas!

I know that if I need to know something, I can post the inquiry here on VFB,
and usually withing minutes, I will have an answer. That in itself is worth the
price of admission here. To top it off, the answers arrive in my mailbox
automatically and all by themselves, without me needing to click on a link to
go somewhere else to read the reply.

If I were to ask the same question on a forum, and if I forget to 'subscribe'
to the thread, and I get distracted for a day or two and I forget to check the
forum, I may never see any replies.

At any rate, thanks for this thread. It has brought some life to VFB. And now,
since I am working 32 hours a day, I shall, out of necessity, return to the
realm of lurkdom until I can take my next breath of air ( I am not allowed to
breathe while at work! LOL).

Have fun and smooth waters,

Salty Dan

If at first you don't succeed, maybe you shouldn't try sky diving!

Re: [VFB] I'll take the VFB list over any Forum

2010-01-29 Thread ashley strutt
I'm also a member of a couple of forums as well as this one email list.

I personally prefer this format for 2 reasons, the first being its more
informal, which may result in some paople finding it easier to post here
than on forums.

The other being that when I work away it is easier to pick up and read
emails than to go to forums.

Ashley
