Subject: [VFB] Any More Bream Flyfishers here???

Folks: I live in N.E. but more like E Central as I'm 60 miles due East of
Birmingham, AL, and the only trout here are a few in the mountain stream, but
it is ALL Nat'l forrest and of course, all but impossible to get to without
hiking fo rdays, and with my bad back and hip it's just not an option.. So, I
flyfish for bream and sunfish (cause in Bama there have been four pound
bluegill caught NO fish tale there LOL)...Anyway, went to my favorite watershed
here yesterday afternoon to try out my early fathers day fish/deptfinder, and
the surface water temp is about 84.5 degrees, and 85 degrees drives the
bluegills etc back into deeper (cooler) water.. So, I didn't catch anything
much cause I have been using bream killer "water bug" flies, and tearin em up
on the bed.. But, now, any suggestions to pull em out of the deeper water??? I
know I'll have to go to a sinking wet fly, but which types would be best???
Thanks in advance.. Chuck da Newbie Flyfisher

2019-10-04 Thread Niclas (Gmail)
I didn't see this until today and I'm very sad to hear this. Jimmy has
meant much to me. He was one of the guys who grabbed me and got me going
from the very start when I first joined the VFB in 2004. Checking back in
my inbox now I can see that the very first VFB-mail I actually got was from
him... one of his many *QUOTE FOR THE DAY*:

Deb;

When I was in New Mexico a few years ago I was on the road at Philmont and saw
all the “no fishing, private property” signs.

I will definitely give Jody your best regards.

Yes that is correct. His other was Calico. Not sure if he still had both. Last
time I was down on his ranch was quite a few years ago.

I. Believe one of his sons has been keeping up with the ranch since Jimmy got
sick and couldn’t do it any longer.

Alan,
I'm sorry to hear that Jimmy has passed. I still have my personally
autographed book from him "Moon Holler Misfits" He always had a great sense
of humor. I think of him a lot, being here in New Mexico. As I remember he
was very fond of the Boy Scout Camp here. I often wonder what happened to
his long horns? Maybe you can fill us in Alan when you get back home, Was
his favorite Diego or something like that? Give our best regards to Jody
and let her know that we are thinking of her.

Re: [VFB] Jimmy D. Moore

2019-09-26 Thread Michael Bliss
I have missed JimmyD on the group. He was a very fun contributor here as
we started on this journey from flyfish@ many years ago. He and I shared a
love for Philmont. He also was involved with antique golf clubs. I had
some from my dad and he helped me get a valuation on them. Just a nice
person.Like Murph I am sure he is in good hands now and no more pain.
Prayers will go out to his family. It is sad to have another of our group
pass on.

2019-09-25 Thread Allan Fish

I tried to reply last night on my iPad - it must have been rejected.

This was a really saddening notice.

Jimmy was a remarkable person.  For those of you who didn't know him, he
retired from the Boy Scouts of America as the Executive (that's the Big
Kahuna) of the over 140,000 acre Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
    My very questionable
memory is telling me he was there 23 years.

After retirement, he became the Outdoors Writer for many newspapers in
Texas.  He also wrote a hilarious fishing book (I'd have to go upstairs
to get it to remember the title) in the same vein as Patrick McManus.

I miss Jimmy D.

Prayers to Jody.

RE: [VFB] Jimmy D. Moore

2019-09-25 Thread Chuck Alexander
Bob: I remember one of the midge swaps. It was a NASCAR swap and back then
Mark Martin was my favorite driver and he was sponsored by the Army whose
colors are gold and black so I tied a “Go Army Mark Martin” midge in a size 16
or 18 I think it was. Chuck

Such sad news. Back in the days when I was still hosted the midge swap Jimmy
tie size 16 14 hooks because of his hands. Just ain't right not to have Jimmy
in the swap

Speaking of David Murphy, I didn’t know him well as he passed away right after

one that about 15 of us got together and tied Chili peppers, put them in a
memorial shadow box and sent one to Murphs wife and kids etc. I think we should
do the same for Jimmy D’s family as well. If somebody van come up with the
pattern, I’d be glad to meister such a swap unless somebody else would rather
do that.

Anyway, let me know if you’d even be interested or not and I’ll go Saturday to
my local Hobby Lobby and price the shadw boxes, postage etc ect and come up
with a total price. I see this 8” by 10” sized one that could hole up to about
20 flies or less for only $8.99 each, which mens that it should be within each
ones budget as with shipping etc and the hooks etc $15 each, or less Chuck

I am in Texas now and will be attending his funeral. I will appreciate it if
you could all say a prayer for Jimmy and his wife Jody.
When I get more info I will pass it on.
