RE: [VFB] Hurricane Isaac now sharpening hook.

2012-09-03 Thread Anthony Spezio
Sharpened the hook and it caught fish instead of missing them.
Will post fishing report later.

A nice day for themJ My flat stone is in a pocket in my vest, which I don’t
wear very often any more, the rod, like I said is in a little holster like my
floatant & clips on to the chest pack or my vest.

I have a hook stone and I have meant to put in my vest. Will have to do that
now.

My son and two friends will be here till tomorrow. Hope to fish today. I was
tying at Cabala's yesterday and they took the boat out while I was gone. They
had a good day with 33 trout caught between them.

I was watching a video at work( Bass Pro )by Lefty showing that he uses a
diamond impregnated nail file.

He demo'd that he sharpens it on four sides.

Thank you,

I keep a hook hone in my chest pack & check the hook if I have a couple of
misses in a row. Plus, I lose enough flies that I generally have a sharp one
availableJ

I read an article that suggested that many fish were lost due to slightly dull
hooks.  This author carried a file and after a period of nymphing would
resharpen the hook.  I am not as diligent as I should be on checking that and
it sounds like my mentor Tony isn't either.

Tony, I'd say you had a very successful day. The main thing was for them to
catch fish, right?
You accomplished that.  Sometimes the guide doesn't need to catch any. And at
least you
got back to the house safely and the problem was a simple dead battery. :-P

Re: [VFB] Hurricane Isaac now sharpening hook.

2012-09-03 Thread The Smiths
I have my nippers and hook hone on a 8" cord with a dropper loop in the middle.
The loop is attached to a zinger. When I tie on a fly and clip the tag end of
the leader, the hone is right at hand as a reminder to touch up the hook point.
