The cleanest way I see right now to implement vPIP into Blogger (and
possibly other blogging software like Typepad) is to make a FireFox
extension. Do you use FireFox?

I'll look at doing that after I get a stable beta of vPIP as a

Off the top of my head it sounds easier to write a Greasemonkey script
(because you can reuse your javascript) instead of writing a full
extension. You also get the added value that Greasemonkey scripts work in
Opera. :o)

Re: [videoblogging] Re: vPIP (videos Playing In Place) version 0.02 alpha

2006-03-03 Thread Andreas Haugstrup Pedersen
Wow that's a lot of code...

As you probably know this isn't the first time a playing-in-place script
has been talked about. :o)

It's my opinion that all the mark-up a blogger should have to write is
something like:

a href=[URL] rel=enclosure type=video/quicktimeimg ... //a

The rel=enclosure is there to weed out false positives and the
type=video/quicktime is there to tell videos apart from other kinds of
enclosures. This builds on the kind of links people are already writing on
videoblogs today (there's your reuse from microformats :p).

You can then use unobtrusive javascript to attach onclick events (that
handle the playing-in-place) to the links. You get the benifit of
javascript (playing-in-place) without the disadvantages of span's and
onclick attributes (spiders can't read the links) and there's way less
code for the blogger to write.

Obviously since I'm gushing abour this approach it's the one I use on my
blog (Raymond tested the same script on evilvlog a while back and I think
he's still using it on dltq.org). David Meade made excellent additions to
my javascript, but unfortunately I've lost my bookmark (I was going to
roll them into the script on my blog at a later date).

Wow that's a lot of code...

As you probably know this isn't the first time a playing-in-place

 has been talked about. :o)

It's my opinion that all the mark-up a blogger should have to write is
 something like:

 a href=[URL] rel=enclosure type=video/quicktimeimg ... //a

Actually, when I implement that graphical part, the blogger only needs
to fill out the text entries for video source, width, height,
poster image, controller, autoplay, etc.

Right now they only need to use the custom OBJECT ../OBJECT
tag I use. It's parsed into the resultant presentation code I
exampled below.

The rel=enclosure is there to weed out false positives and the
type=video/quicktime is there to tell videos apart from other
kinds of
enclosures. This builds on the kind of links people are already
writing on
videoblogs today (there's your reuse from microformats :p).

Yes, this is simple and clean, but doesn't allow for as much control
over video size, autoplay, controller, etc. My semi-minimal tag
example is something like this:

OBJECT type=application/vPIP+xml id=MyVideo
   PARAM NAME=src VALUE=http://videohost.com/video.mov;
   PARAM NAME=img VALUE=http://imagehost.com/img.jpg;
/OBJECT

It's a bit more than the A HREF... but still pretty clean, within
the XHTML standard and clear to those who do XHTML.

   -- Enric
   -==-
   http://www.cirne.com

You can then use unobtrusive javascript to attach onclick events (that
handle the playing-in-place) to the links. You get the benifit of
javascript (playing-in-place) without the disadvantages of span's
and
onclick attributes (spiders can't read the links) and there's way less
code for the blogger to write.

Obviously since I'm gushing abour this approach it's the one I use
on my
blog (Raymond tested the same script on evilvlog a while back and I
think
he's still using it on dltq.org). David Meade made excellent
additions to
my javascript, but unfortunately I've lost my bookmark (I was going to
roll them into the script on my blog at a later date).

It's a big problem for us at homeless nation. No matter how much

[videoblogging] Re: myspace video

2006-03-03 Thread David Dundas

I actually have been sitting this convo out... but because there have
been so many emails with myspace in the subject dropped in my inbox
over the past few days, I thought i'd contribute...

I can't think of one example that has had this type of integrated
environment and lasted... geocities, aol? Being recent college grad
('03) I saw the fall of Friendster. I saw people stop using AIM when
they moved out of college, I saw a ton of people use Skype last year,
and not so much anymore. I see now people in college using Facebook
instead of Friendster and Myspace... these things inevitably get
replaced. Myspace won't go away tomorrow, but the site is still a
primarily a social means of keeping in touch and identity...as the
main users of this site (16-24)grow out of this stage I can't see them
sticking with it.

I don't think it matters what type of environment Myspace is. What
the experience is, what the upload process is, what the content
ownership terms are. The fact remains that today Myspace has a
ridiculous amount of traffic, and for bloggers seeking visibility,
from the sounds of it, tools, user experiences, peer environment and
content rights are willing to be exchanged for visibility and traffic.
Until Myspace goes out of style if it ever does, people will be
attracted to it for the sheer page views that they drive. They don't
have to do any of the aforementioned things because they are the big
dogs.

[videoblogging] Need worksafe WMV, AVI, or whatever else Creative Vision:M will take

2006-03-03 Thread Harold J. Johnson
Hey gals and guys,

I'm here at Virgin Digital playing with one of those new Vision:M's by
Creative, and I'm looking for some decent (meaning:worksafe) video in
a format the device will recognize. I tried loading it with Jay's
latest post, but no go -- it's a Quicktime file. I was gonna put some
KitKat on the device, but ummm...worksafe?

Anyone got a suggestion?

Thanks,

Harold

2006-03-03 Thread cooper3acd
If you like machinima, check out
http://www.machinimahq.com/

I/we just launched it and it has lot's of worksafe (and a few not
worksafe) machinima creations.

Feel free to right-click on any of these wmvs and download them
(save target as...) locally and try them out on the Vision:M (btw -
let us know how the Vision works out for you).

Sorry to the mac crowd on the wmv's - we're looking to add mac
support at some point, although as the software we will be promoting
on the site is currently (but not forever!) pc only, it's not an
urgent priority.

We're taking the high road on this site and contacting creators for
permission and recruiting some new creators that aren't widely
published.

Cheers,
Rob

[videoblogging] Best PC software for mpeg 4 480 pixel resolution on the iPod

2006-03-03 Thread cooper3acd
Hey, I hope this hasn't been covered already, but anyone got a
suggestion on the best PC software to use to painlessly get fairly
long videos (movies and or shows I own) onto the iPod at max
resolutions (specs say up to 480 x 480 as mpeg 4) for viewing on the
TV?

I just won a 30gb ipod - it won't replace my nano for music, but I'm
thinking it will be awesome as an easy way to transport shows/movies
and I want to get them at a resolution that will be acceptable for
regular tv viewing.

thanks,
Rob

Re: [videoblogging] Best PC software for mpeg 4 480 pixel resolution on the iPod

2006-03-03 Thread Kunga
The dimensions you want to shoot for are 640 x 360 from HD and 552 x
414 from SD. The maximum bit rate you can encode in is 2500 kbps.

Forget about H.264 as the max you can use with that makes a much
softer image on a TV. If you use the above, it will look like a DVD
on your TV. H.264 looks more like VHS.

480 x 480 = 230,400 pixels max

4x3:

552 x 414 MAX = 228,528
548 x 411 = 225,228
544 x 408 = 221,952

16x9:

640 x 360 MAX = 230,400
640 x 352 = 225,280
