[videoblogging] The Apple Store guy says...

2007-01-19 Thread Scott Lockman
Hello,

A student of mine relayed an interesting bit of information she was
told at an Apple Store in Tokyo while shopping for Final Cut Pro
recently. She was told that FCP would not install on a Mac Book -
that she would need a Mac Book Pro to install and run the application.

At least two students in the class said that they have FCP running on
Mac Books.

The same student was given similar information regarding the
incompatibility from independent Mac dealers.

I don't know what to make of this. How come people are being told
that FCP won't work on a Mac Book if other people report that they
are able run the program on that computer? Does it mean that the Mac
Book doesn't meet the technical specs of Final Cut Pro but can still
run it?

Can anyone confirm what the sales staff have told my student?

Thanks.

Well I dont know how well FCP actually runs on a MacBook, but the bit
of the specification that the MacBook doesnt seemt o meet is:

AGP Quartz Extreme or PCI Express graphics card (Final Cut Studio is
not supported on systems using the Intel Extreme Graphics 950 GMA)

Also need to have at least 1GB of RAM to use HD.

As the diplomat Markus would say... That statement has an aroma of
inaccuracy. :D

FCP Studio certainly runs on MacBooks. The only potential issue is the
different video card
in the MacBook from the MacBook Pro.

FCP Studio is made up of modules, so each module does its own tests for
installation. For
instance, if your video card isn't powerful enough to run Motion, then the
option to
install Motion will be greyed out. You'll still be able to install the rest of
the modules,
Final Cut Pro, LiveType, Soundtrack Pro, etc.

Aside from the video card, the other considerations are processor speed and
memory on
the board. It takes a certain speed to be able to edit HD, for instance, if
that's the
intended application. Also, you need to have more than the 512MB memory that
comes
standard with the lowest-priced MacBook. Basically, a MacBook ordered
specifically to
handle the requirements of FCP Studio will run it fine.

Worst-case scenario, have your student buy an old MacBook and put FCP 3 or 4.5
on it.
The added functionality of Studio isn't necessarily useful to a novice.

2007-01-19 Thread Bill Streeter
Yeah that's what I was going to say. It'll run FCP fine, but since
FCP is sold as a suite of apps and not all of those apps will run on
a MacBook then it's technically true that Final Cut Pro Studio isn't
compatible with a MacBook--since part of the suite, Motion, won't
run on it. But Final Cut Pro will run just fine. This is of
particular interest to me since I've been thinking of getting a
MacBook for mobile editing. I just need to do straight cutting in
FCP. I do use Motion from time to time but I can save that work to
do on my G5. I think everything else, Soundtrack Pro and DVD studio
will run fine on a MacBook. So the bottom line is if you don't need
to use Motion you can get along fine running Final Cut Studio on a
MacBook.

Hi Bill,

We're currently working on this issue and plan to have a big new
release of the FireAnt website in February. This new release will
support the Media RSS namespace for thumbnails.

Currently, we can grab thumbnails from blog posts if they are included
in the link to the video enclosure file like this:

a href=http://link/to/video.mov; rel=enclosureimg
src=http://link/to/thumbnail/image.jpg; //a

We also have the ability to get thumbnail images from MeFeedia, but it
seems that MeFeedia may have disabled this feature.

Hope that helps explain... please stay tuned for our new website
update that will address this along with many other bug fixes and new
features.

Re: [videoblogging] FireAnt.tv video thumbnails

2007-01-19 Thread groups-yahoo-com
There is also a larger issue Bill which Josh touched on.

The general problem is that while 90% (or some otherwise very hight
percent of vloggers) have thumbnails in their posts they are not
semantically specified. This is to say they are not specified in
standard way which can be recognized by aggregators and search sites
like Fireant, vlogdi, mefeedia and others. For example... eclosures
can be specified in your blog post among other ways by a microformat
standard rel=enclosure. There is no standards for huge amounts of
supporting meta infromation like thumbnails, i.e. there is no
rel=thumnail.

We're working on mechanisms not only to better identify thumbnails in
blog posts, among other things, by creating a new media Microformat.
It should not only have a tremendous immediate impact for people who
use services like blip, feedburner, mefeedia, fireant and others, but
it should also put this control into YOUR hands if you like when
you're writing a blog post.

P.S. Josh, I hope you'll collaborate on this media microformat as well
as sharing other ideas on sharing thumbnail information.

Peace,

I think it is a serious FAILURE of our legal/business system that a
binding document cannot be written in plain language bullet points.

At the very minimum the conscientious business provides an easily
UNDERSTANDABLE plain language translation of their legal-beagle
gobbledegook!!!

I should NOT have to pay my lawyer to tell me if I want to do business
with a company. Many of these TOS agreements look like I will have to
pay the service provider's legal costs if a third party sues them for
their actions and just suspects that I'm somehow involved.

How could no dollar cost video hosting ever be WORTH the RISK of
paying the legal costs of the service provider in a remote state, even
if I was at fault in a suit?

I would say this problem is in part due to the fact that 'can they
sell or license your video' is worded unclearly, does a yes mean yes
to both sell and license, or just license? It would be better if that
 were clearer.

I welcome warmly any guides or other things that can spread clarity on
these issues, but unfortunately the devil is in the detail and I guess
its easy to get it slightly wrong.

Also theres a mistake in the google section, it mentions yahoo!
