Re: [videoblogging] Happy Birthday Videoblogging List
Hey, we're 3 years old! http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/1 http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/message/2 happy birthday to everyone. (Its my real 34th birthday today as well) its pretty amazing what this group has done. Mainly helping each other learn how to best post video to the web. In just the past 3 years, we've collectively made an amazing amount of varied work that is now archived online. We've had influence in building and pushing the technology being used. When we started, it was always difficult to explain to people what we did. Now its all mainstream. Youtube really helped gain awareness. A videoblogger can get a lot of attention noweven paid(!)but it also equally important those of us who are just recording our world/ideas over time. In 20 years, we'll all have movies of our lives that the world has never seen before. our grandkids are going to flip. we spent much of the early years futzing with HOW to videoblog. Now we can focus on WHAT we're actually making, distributing, and archiving. This is how we'll help to continue to push it forward. for me it's all about content now. Now is a good time to write something you remember down on the Vlogumentary wiki http://vlogumentary.pbwiki.com/ yeah...do a brain dump whenever you might have joined. many of us had that ah-ha moment. be good to record that change. [videoblogging] Introduction and First questions
Hello, I just joined this group, so be gentle with the broom handles. Anyways, my name is John Campbell. I do a podcast called Comics Radar, fairly obviously (I think) about Comic Books, and because comic books are such a visual medium, I've been interested in doing a video version of the podcast. Also I just love playing with tech toys, so that's why I'm here. And really, the biggest stumbling for me has been the software. the only camera I have right now is a Sony DSC-M2, which films in MPEG 4 format, so can anyone recommend what software I could use to edit and encode it. The other thing I really want to do is be able to do a voiceover while watching the video. I want to be able to show the comics pages and pan over them. while talking out the review of the book. The other thing I would like to do would be to put in the image, while I'm on camera like the news does. I was wondering if anyone had recommendations and/or reviews of what software would allow me to do all of these things. I think the Pinnacle 11 plus allows me to do all of this, but if any of you have experience or a better recommendation, what do you recommend I use?

[videoblogging] Apple TV youtube support means h264 from youtube
Its pretty much confirmed with Apple's recent announcement about Youtbe Apple TV support, that this means youtube will be offering videos in the h264 format. Initially it will be popular videos, and new uploads, that are available in h264, starting sometime this month, and then by the autumn they plan to have converted the entire youtube catalog, I think. Im sure its no co-incidence that the timing also fits in with the US iphone launch at the end of the month. So Apples initial suggestion that iphone youtube support could be done by youtube offering h264, rather than the iphone supporting flash, seems to have come true. It remains to be seem whether youtube will offer the h264 versions of videos through its normal service, allow people to download them easily, syndicate them, or whether they will try to keep it an Apple excusive feature for now. Also isnt clear whether youtube will leave peoples videos unchanged if they upload them in h264, or whether the youtube system will always recompress. Here's a story about this stuff from newteevee: http://newteevee.com/2007/06/03/youtube-goes-h264-thanks-to-apple/ Anyway as a h264 preacher Im very happy with all the progress made on adoption of this stuff over the last 2 years, come a long way, Im still shocked and happy that even Microsoft support it now on the xbox360. The only missing peices of the jigsaw that remain are wider choice of encoders for windows, and alternative h264-capable browser player plugin for those that dont like quicktime. Cheers Steve Elbows

[videoblogging] Re: Anyone try the Elgato Turbo 264?
Thanks :) No joy on getting any samples from them so far I guess, oh well I will do their sales job for them by reporting my initial findings: Test machine 1: iMac G5 2Ghz, Tiger, 2GB RAM Source file: DV PAL clip, 720x576, 25fps. 23 seconds long, interlaced. File loaded into quicktime 7.1.6 Exported to the following formats. First time is without elgato hardware, 2nd time is with the Turbo 264: Apple TV preset: 5 mins 54sec 0 mins 43sec Ipod 640x480 preset: 2 mins 20 sec0 mins 30 sec Ipod 320x240*: 1 mins 9 sec 0 mins 23 sec * Apple dont offer a default 320sx240 ipod preset anymore, wheras elgato turbo 264 offers it as an option for the ipod preset. So for the non-hardware encoding time, I used manual settings, h264 baseline single pass. The time for non-hardware assisted multipass 320x240 on this imac was 2 mins 27 seconds. That concludes test part one, as you can see it made a phenomenal difference to encoding times. Expect time difference to be much less on macbook that will be used in test 2. Other great news: Turbo 264 appears to deinterlace the footage! Woo this is great, because the apple quicktime exports that use 640x480 or higher are not deinterlacing at all, which is causing very bad quality for people using interlaced footage as source material, and not deinterlacing using some other method. The turbo 264 deinterlacing isnt the best Ive ever seen, seems to use a frame combining method that can cause blurring, but its still a heck of a lot better than the awful stuff that quicktime will spit out for apple TV if people arent careful with this issue. I'll post samples ASAP so ou can see what I mean for yourselves. Other factors that I havent had time to study properly yet include quality and filesize. So far the Turbo 264 seems to be producing files that are a bit smaller than the normal quicktime (eg 8.8MB instead of 95.MB, 3.4MB instead of 4.7MB), although this could be due to quicktime lack of deinterlacing making the encoding less bitrate-efficient, wasting bits recording all those horrible interlace jaggies. As you can probably tell Im rather happy and impressed so far, the only thing that could now cause me not to recommend this device is if the quality of footage is noticably worse under careful examination, not sure yet. Cheers Steve Elbows PS. The Elgato quicktime presets also use the sensible file extension .mp4 rather than Apples silly .m4v, added bonus :) --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Deirdre Straughan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I don't know the product and don't own a Mac (so couldn't try it), but do know its creator. Re: [videoblogging] Re: quick question
From what I recall ... it's not vegas' fault but Quicktime's. There is something about the Windows Quicktime API that is not exposed to windows applications (not even if you have QT Pro installed). I'm pretty sure its the AAC audio codec. Basically windows applications cant request the AAC codec be used via the QT API. You can use all sorts of other QT stuff ... but cant do ipod formatted video without QT Pro ... because on a windows box only QT pro is going to be able to access the parts of QT for Windows that allows for AAC audio compression. ... poorly described ... but the bottom line is that in windows you need QT Pro, and you have to actually use it (not some other app) to do the final compression. -- http://www.DavidMeade.com
Re: [videoblogging] Introduction and First questions
I'm a huge fan of Premiere Elements. Its about $100 I think. If you ask me its the best one out there in that price range (for windows). The full blown Premiere is more expensive (and has more features). Lots of people are fond of Sony Vegas ... I personally don't like it but that probably just me. Yeah, I wanted to think a bit before I answered, that and my son's nearly losing his finger (s) adventure, got me sidetracked. I use the light version of Sony Vegas, but it does not handle mp4, unless it is an mp4 .mov extenstion. Otherwise if it is a straight mp4 you would have to buy the full version of Vegas which is about 400 bucks. I had issues with Adobe's version but I hear it's better now, and it can handle mp4. If you have Vista on your PC I think the new version of Windows movie maker can handle mp4 and that is free so... Ulead is Ok, but you really don't have a lot of user control, it's really spoon fed to you, which if you are starting out may be good, but you could outgrow it pretty quickly, it depends. [videoblogging] Re: Anyone try the Elgato Turbo 264?
Test Machine 2: MacBook Intel Core Duo (not later core 2 duo) 1.83Ghz, Tiger, 2GB RAM Source file: DV PAL clip, 720x576, 25fps. 23 seconds long, interlaced. File loaded into quicktime 7.1.6 Exported to the following formats. First time is without elgato hardware, 2nd time is with the Turbo 264: Apple TV preset: 2 mins 08 sec, 0 mins 43sec Ipod 640x480 preset: 1 mins 02 sec, 0 mins 31 sec Ipod 320x240*: 0 mins 40 sec, 0 mins 17 sec * Apple dont offer a default 320sx240 ipod preset anymore, wheras elgato turbo 264 offers it as an option for the ipod preset. So for the non-hardware encoding time, I used manual settings, h264 baseline single pass. The time for non-hardware assisted multipass 320x240 on this macbook was 1 min 15 seconds. As expected, the difference the Turbo 264 makes on this machine is less, as the machine has a much better CPU than the G5 iMac, so the non-hardware assisted encodes are much quicker. Wheras the turbo 264 encodes are roughly the same speed as when done on the G5, sometimes a bit faster, sometimes a bit slower (perhaps due to slower hard drive in this laptop than the iMac?). Filesizes and deinterlacing are, as expected, the same as with the iMac tests. Have done some brief tests on what difference this stuff can make to people's energy use. Two factors make this an electricity-saving device. Firstly encodes are much quicker, so you can maybe have your machine switched on for less time. Secondly the CPU in your mac does much less when letting the turbo 264 do the encoding. For example this macbook, with battery already charged, and screen brightness turned off (I use an external monitor), uses around 20 watts when the CPU isnt doing much. When using the turbo 264 this rises to around the 27-30 watt level. When encoding using quicktime no turbo 264, th CPU is under heavy load and around 43 watts are being consumed, plus it quickly starts to sound like a small hairdryer. I shall get round to 'writing this up' in video form and sticking it on carbondown at some point this month. Other things to think about when considering whether to get a Turbo 264 and reviewing my results: My tests were done with quicktime, its likely if you use a different software encoder at the moment, it may already be quicker than the non-turbo264 times Ive posted. If you like precise bitrate control ( thus control over filesizes), so far the Turbo 264 gives you no control of these things, so its just as bad as Apples presets in that respect. Although I havent done quality tests yet, some multipass software encoders could be expected to give better results. Probably more true at higher resolutions, will test. Likewise if you already make 640x480 videos and use a very good deinterlacer, you may be best to keep using your current deinterlacer before encoding with the turbo. But if you struggle with this deinterlacing stuff, the turbo264 provides an extremely easy way to fix this stuff in an ok way without even thinking about it. Cheers Steve Elbows

[videoblogging] Re: quick question
This situation means that even if buying quicktime pro, the process will be more of a pain than your current export from video editing app. Because now you will have to save your video timeline to an intermediate format, which will then be loaded into quicktime pro (or alternative) to be encoded. To get decent quality, your intermediate format needs to be high quality and bitrate, perhaps native DV format if thats what your source camera is, and so long as your video editing app doesnt take too long to export it. Its a time/filespace/quality balance as to what you use, something people dont need to worry about if the right export options are available straight from their video editing app. Also bear in mind quicktime is not the only h264 encoder available for Windows or mac, here is my assessment of pro's and cons of Quicktime versus other options: pro's: Its farily cheap Lots of people know how to use it advise if you have problems As Apple make quicktime and the ipod apple tv, we should be confident that its output will be compatible Its pretty easy to use con's: Its not free (some alternatives are free but can be harder to use) Its not the fastest If you want to make 640x480 files and your video to be encoded is interlaced, quicktime doesnt do deinterlacing and so makes a pigs ear of the results Lack of manual control over bitrate ( thus filesize) if using apple ipod tv presets I still havent found the perfect alternative h264 encoder that is free or dirt cheap for Windows, is easy to use, and accepts most formats of video, and handles de-interlacing, although Im sure such an app exists or could be made out of existing free hard to use stuff. The only alternative commercial Windows h264 encoder I hav experience with is Nero Recode 2. It may represent good value if all the other apps it comes packaged with (cd writing etc), are of use. It is faster than qucktime encoding for sure. I am not sure how up-to-date its device profiles (ipod etc) are, but it does offer a lot of encoding options, which is a good and bad thing. I cant remember wheher its intelligent when it comes to deinterlacing or not, I will use it again soon to refresh my knowledge. http://www.nero.com/nero7/enu/Nero_Recode_2.html Cheers Steve Elbows --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Heath [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Of course that would be the answer, Jobs and Gates never heard the song Ebony and Ivory I am guessing ;-) you know the whole part about living together in perfect harmonyok, maybe I am the only one who thought that was funny Heath http://batmangeek.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, David Meade meade.dave@ wrote: From what I recall ... it's not vegas' fault but Quicktime's. Then I load up the AVI in QT Pro and compress it down to a 3vix encoded MOV. (Then - cause I'm a geek - I add on some QT interactive stuff, but thats purely optional :P ) Then I upload it to blip! If on Vista - and you go with Vegas (full or other I imagine) make sure to update. Latest update fixes some compatibility issues when launching (still worked, just complained). I'll second the staying away from Pinnacle, and I've only used the older versions of Ulead which I really didn't care for. I use Vegas (although the full is pricey - erm, don't tell wife). It's easy for a beginner to lay things out, but has a lot of more advanced built in features. I also played with Premiere Elements and it did a good job as well. [videoblogging] Re: Rocketboom Sponsorship
Looks good to me. If all sponsorship advertising was as unobtrusive as your new model appears to be, I would be an extremely happy man with less to rant about. So no, I cant find anything to criticise in the model. So long as its enough to actually get sponsors, it seems like a good balancing act, and a model for others to follow. Obviously there are the usual problems with how far down the tail sponsors will be prepared to tread, so who knows how many people could use this model to bring in some revenue, but in terms of unobtrusiveness I think its a winner. Its about the only form of advert I personally will tolerate as a viewer, I cant be the only one, so savvy vlogs, sponsors services/sites would do well to stick to this sort of post-roll stuff. Mind you I suppose the subtle wrecksalvage stuff was at the start and that didnt bother me either. So maybe its the audio thang that is of key importance, keep the sound unobtrusive and you wont try the viewers patience so much is the lesson here? Compare and contrast with the hideous walmart advert pre-rolls I get when going to watch vids on the likes of CBS news. Or even with your own coverage of your sponsorship stuff on todays rocketboom. It only annoys me when I can hear it! Hoorah, why didnt I realise this sooner, Im sure Ive muted TV adverts in the past and it works wonders. Aha you are using 3ivx, which is the older type mpeg4, rather than h264, but is superior in speed and quality to apples mpeg4. Certainly when it comes to mpeg4 rather than h264, theres a lot more choice of encoders editing apps that may have built in export. 3ivx on Windows may not even need quicktime pro to work, I cant remember. Its a real shame that something went odd at 3ivx and they havent released any updates or new versions for what seems to be years now. So for those still wishing to use their stuff, and create ipod apple-tv compatible mpeg4 instead of h264, its harder to recommend 3ivx than it used to be. They have also annoyed some of their users/customers by repeatedly stating release dates for the next version of 3ivx, and then failing to release at all for ages afterwards. This year, they announced 3ivx 5 in January, but it didnt materialise. Then it was about to be released in February, with the assurance that just some minor thing was preventing release. Now it June and it might come out on Tuesday apparently, but based on past history it will be a minor miracle if this happens. At this rate mpeg4 will be obsolete, totally replaced by h264, by the time they update! Bugs that have existed in Mac version since Tiger came out, are in danger of being joined by new problems when Leopard arrives!
