[videoblogging] Re: please consider giving MoveDigital some money TODAY

2007-11-02 Thread Chuck
I use them to quickly crank out a secure RSS feed and easily add files to it

They make it very easy to create media for mobile phones, too, and I've used
that
occasionally.

Most of all, I like how responsive they are to requests for new features and
their honesty and
transparency. This is one company I'd like to see stick around.

[videoblogging] Re: please consider giving MoveDigital some money TODAY

2007-11-02 Thread Chuck
Here is Mark's reply:

Chuck and Tim,

10% of MoveDigital trials become paying customers. We run cash positive on user
acquisition even off of Google Adwords. We spend $35-50 to acquire users and
they
spend $72 within 3 months. We are running infrastructure negative because we
need more
paying users or more higher paying users. This is a viral, SEO issue. The
service is
incredibly fair from price and billing perspective. It is now even more so
since we just
turned the service into a co-op.

How do we make our money then? Two ways: ultimately from "software as a
service" fees
and from retail purchases of MoveDigital in conjunction with various storage
devices. Our
"decremental" billing patent enables us to operate the service unlike any other
entity. The
problem is the benefits of the patent are indistinguishable from incremental
monthly
billing services online because people fall for the sucker punch offers instead
of opting to
pay for what they use. But in retail the decremental model creates a
substantial barrier and
gives us a complete lock on that marketing channel. We have the patent on the
prepaid
phone card for bandwidth. We just need the market to catch up with us. Every
gallon of
milk you buy is on a prepaid basis. We just need to get people used to buying
bandwidth
in the same manner. You also ultimately have to assume people value having
files over
streaming. There is an interactive component to streaming which creates
inherent
advantages as it relates page views and advertising but for quality,
portability and sharing
files rule. I believe we do have to address the interactive component and that
is why we
built our embeddable player.

Today the ad model wins. It is so much more profitable to be paid for ads
instead of
bandwidth. As smart as Akamai looks they look pretty dumb next to Google. But
as files
approach higher quality levels the ad model begins to break because it's hard
to cover the
2GB delivery of a file to a thousand people on a CPM basis. That is why we are
beginning
to see the blended P2P CDN everywhere. It's mostly wishful thinking. The
problem is this
story is as old as Kontiki. Users are not willing to give up their upstream
bandwidth and
wreck their VOIP, etc... without some form of compensation. The easy solution
is to stay
away from longer form higher quality content but soon people are going to want
to
distribute the files from their HD camcorders in the same resolution the
footage is
captured in.

The long term reality is that our model works, the short term reality is that
we are ahead
of our window by a small amount of time. It's worth keeping the service up and
I know
MoveDigital obviously could benefit from Tim's wisdom.

Nominally we need $25K to take care of co-location provider but we really need
the full
$39K to completely zero out our payables. Other than that we are debt-free and
own all of
our gear.

I hope this helps and am available for further dialogue any time over the
weekend.

Kind regards,

Mark

Not trying to be an ass. Really I'm not, but why don't they just sell
more plans? If they can't then the business was never meant to be. If
they got initial round of funding then it appears they had a shot at
it. In my opinion, for the $99 level you can get your own shared
server with domain name. Not sure what the benefit is really.

I would rather donate to a fellow video blogger.

They provide a great service.

Whew. Two videos up. My site is screwed up - I hadn't looked at it
since converting it to Show in a Box. RSS is messed up according to
Google Reader (not updating but the feed LOOKS correct) though the
feedburner feed seems fine.

So this will be very weird and it may undo me but I guess I'm REALLY in now.

2007-11-02 Thread Frank Sinton
Hi all,

We've done a big upgrade to Mefeedia (released over the past several
months) that you may enjoy. :)

http://www.mefeedia.com

Some highlights (check out the mefeedia blog and users group for more
details - links at the bottom of our home page):

• New feed/show page that highlights recent activity, a fan wall, and
a "myvloglog-type" widget. It should be really easy now to see your
show's and video's activity that is happening on Mefeedia.com (will
soon be extended to beyond just what is happening on mefeedia too).

• Meeps / Social Discovery â€" the goal is to answer the one question:
"What are you watching?". This is a complete revamp of the social
network, now called the Meeps Network (for "media peeps"). It is now
much easier to filter out just what your friends are watching â€" most
recent and most popular. (this is my favorite new part of mefeedia, as
i am addicted to going through the activity feeds of my friends).

• Channels are ad-hoc social networks (groups) that anyone can start
and anyone can join and start adding shows, comments, etc..

• New backend aggregation â€" huge upgrade, we can now pick up and
aggregate even more video from more sites.

Hope you enjoy the new experience and stay tuned for even bigger
things on the way. Please contact me directly if you have any question

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Smart videobloggers- look here!!

2007-11-02 Thread David Meade
I dunno. Messages like "Hey check out our new project! For more info
check the url below" seems to be pretty standard for this group. I
don't see how this is any more self-serving than others.

Are they advertising their show? Yes, but so what? Haven't we've come
to a general understanding that notices of new shows are agreeable
here (while notices of every new episode are not)? Have they got a
commercial spin/sponsor? Yes, but so what? I think wee passed up the
"its got a commercial sponsor and therefore is evil" stage quite a
while ago.

I've watched a few of this show and really liked it so far.

So they have a clever name on a clever topic that ends up calling
themselves smart ... so what ... its not like they called it the
"yourdumb" show.

Rereading the original post the only thing I'm seeing is: "Hey we've
got a new show, here's the general theme, you can participate in the
conversation, and for more info see the referenced url" ...

I'm really, honestly and truly not trying to be a shit, Kathryn.

Having a cohesive, strong and viable community is one thing, but tolerating
the same old self-serving, canned sales pitches are quite another.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but pitching for us to be part of "America's
smartest web show" without providing enough context is poor marketing (and I
am a marketer by trade) and unskilled conversation.

I'm totally confused... why was this totally self-absorbed? The writer didn't
say their show
was "smarter" than other web shows, they said that their show profiled smart
ideas across
the country... sounds like a great idea to me...

how can we build a cohesive, strong and viable community if we flame one
another at the
drop of a hat?

Hey, Richard, that link's not working for me. Can you check it?

In New York film circles, we call that technique "double system sound".
