[videoblogging] From Mac *TO* PC -- Should I Switch?

2008-06-09 Thread Stan Hirson, Sarah Jones
I'm a long-time Apple user. I started with them on a II+ with
incursions into DOS and Windows, but for almost 10 years now I have
been using Apple and editing on FCP. I have been a satisfied Mac user
until a couple of years ago when I had various issues with upgrade
policies and software glitches caused by upgrades of various Apple
programs.

I won't go into my list of issues, but in sum I have been less than
satisfied with Apple in both depth and candor.

I need a new laptop. My 17 PB G4 needs to be upgraded and replaced.
I just priced a new MacBook Pro 17 and it really comes out to about
$4,000 with AppleCare, some software I'll need, etc,. I took a look at
one yesterday and was impressed. With everything but the price.

Up until I no longer trusted Apple, I would have gone for it even at
that price.

I'm thinking of moving to a PC and using XP Pro and possibly Vegas or
even Premiere for all my web editing and production. (Pretty much
straight cutting, no FX.) How bad can a PC be? There are a lot of
people using them. And there is a broader source of support.

But I live in the country, about a 2 hour drive or train from NYC, so
it is a pain for me to browse around different computer stores to get
a hands on feel for screen quality and software options.

I'm wondering if I can get any experience of this group... I've never
used Vegas or Avid Express and I'm wondering about the difference
between that option and Final Cut Express -- I do not need or intend
to shell out for Final Cut Pro.

Just exploring the options. I'm finding Apple and its store staff
arrogant and obnoxious. Is it something I just have to live with? Or
do some of the other companies that actually have to compete with each
other provide better products and service?

Frustrated in the stix...

[videoblogging] IndieLab.org Looking for BETA testers

2008-06-09 Thread Adam Warner
Hi folks,

IndieLab has opened for BETA testing. You can jump right to it,
http://indielab.org , or read below for a further explanation of what it is and
what we hope to accomplish.

IndieLab.org is designed to provide FREE blogs for media creators of all
kinds, including video creators. While reading this list for the past four
years it became
clear to me that there are some potential video bloggers who are either
scared, don't have the technical skills, or who just don't have the
time to spend on buying a domain, installing WP and plugins, and
generally hacking their installs to achieve what they want...but they
still have the desire to create a blog, create video, and post it. Our
goal was to make this process as simple as possible, hence, http://indielab.org
was born.

Please
know that there are MANY things still on the to-do list for this site. The most
important now being the creation of tutorial videos on everything from
basic posting to how to use the specific tools we've installed. Not
everything is clear for new users now, but our plan is to provide an
overkill of support related materials.

Your feedback is most welcome, either here, or through the contact page on the
site.

I love PCs and I would never give up my Windows Media Center for a Mac
but in your case I would still maybe recommend Mac.

When comparing hardware, Macs actually do come out cheaper. If price
is a big issue, you can find a much cheaper PC notebook and you will
probably be quite satisfied with it. XP is a great OS. (and Vista
isn't bad, it's just not what it should have been. don't buy into
apple's FUD) Just know that you'll be dealing with a slower system if
you go the PC route. In the case of Macs, you do get what you pay
for.

I'm a long time PC user, one of the few it seems on this list
somedays ;) Anyway, I can't compare apples to apples, but I will
say that XP is a pretty good operating system, IMO and I have been
using Vegas for my editing needs since I have started vlogging. Sony
Vegas is the bomb for PC's, again IMO. One thing I really like about
Vegas is that it will run really well on a mid range PC, it's stable
and I think pretty easy to use. If you do decide to switch and do
get Vegas and have any questions, just let me know, I'm more than
happy to help out any way I can.

Two months ago I made the jump and switched FROM PC TO Mac... and I
will never look back.

My biggest cause for stress was that I have some custom built software
that will only run on Windows XP, but using VMware Fusion I can toggle
back and forth between Mac OS X and XP. No having to close down OS X
and reboot in Windows.

My productivity has been boosted as a result because using Windows
became a major headache, due to the whole OS just slowing down to a
snail crawl when rendering videos. And I had uber-memory installed.
Not so with my Mac Pro!

Regarding using the XP os, it doesn't even come close to Mac OS X, and
software is generally much cheaper for Mac than Windows.

Just my 2 pennies worth.

When I first read the subject, I thought this was a prank. Seriously. I
would never go back to a PC. The operating system is a dinosaur, they get
worse with each upgrade not better. We have both in our office and the PC

Your G4 does not begin to show you what is possible now on a Mac. To go to
the full size 17-inch and get the newest versions of software will IMO rock
your world. I would do some serious thinking on this before buying a PC.

Good luck with it. I seriously do admire people who can really open up
their minds to evaluate something against the trend or their own experience!

Nothing like a platform question to shake things up eh? ;)

I'm a multi-platformer - and until recently, have always had the PC as
my primary editing monster using Vegas.

I don't think you will have any problem at all converting from the FCP
family to Vegas - it just takes a little adjustment. I'm going through
the same just trying to find out where stuff is on FCPe.

Major advantage of Windows PC = hardware cheap and easy to upgrade and
replace (me = hardware nerd)

Major advantage of Mac based = stuff just plain works without
downloading x, patching y, and rebooting three times.

Wouldn't go Vista though... eventually 'made' me move the
Franken-puter aside for an iMac on my main desk.

my $.02

How about sub $200? You can get Final Cut Express for $155 right now,
and it's pretty similar to Final Cut Pro, and can use almost all of the
plugins/filters that FCP can.

I spent last week evaluating about 30 free filters, so I've got a
editing suite way more powerful than iMovie and way cheaper than Final
Cut Pro... all for less than $200.

 Questions:
 1. How did you get into vlogging?
I was involved in the beginning of podcasting, and knew at the time that
video would be the next big thing. I started experimenting with video
online, and eventually found the vloggers, probably via way of (audio)
podcasting.

 2. How long have you been blogging?
August of 1997. After Dave Winer, I probably have one of the longest
running, continually updated blogs. (Not 'journal' or 'diary' but actual
blog, before that word really existed.)

 3. What provides inspiration for your vlog posts?
I like to experiment with video.

 4. How often do you post?
Not very often nowadays, though in 2005/2006 I tried to post every week
or so.

 5. Is your video blog a business or a hobby?
I will go with hobby on that one.

 6. What motivates you to continue updating your video blog?
I like to experiment with video.

 7. How long does it take you to post (from the idea-filming-posting)?
Too long... I used to do it all super-fast, but now I want a more
polished finished product. Yesterday it took me about 3 hours in total.

 8. If you have a site you would like to share (personal or just one you

As someone who has analyzed the AppleCare policy, it isn't worth it. Most
failures occur within the first year and Apple covers out to one year
automatically.

Secondly don't let Apple install options like bigger HD's and RAM, you can do
all that yourself less expensively. And were you to do that anyhow you'd void
your AppleCare contract.

I currently have an laptop with XP Pro and am seriously considering a MacBook.

I have to totally disagree with Tony about applecare, especially if
you have a laptop. I have had the logic board replaced, the screen
replaced, the casing replaced and two batteries replaced (pretty
evenly spread between my two years of ownership) and have paid 0
dollars. I have a first generation macbook pro 17 - so its been a
little over buggy, but even so, applecare has been more than worth
it to me with every laptop I've owned.

Well since Macs switched to Intel processors its much easier to make a
like-for-like
comparison of prices. Most Apple hardware has quite a price premium every time
Ive done
the maths. Granted I havent looked at US $ prices but you should be able to get
a 17 PC
laptop with same CPU, RAM probably a larger harddrive for noticably less
money. The
non-pro macbooks and the high end 8-core mac pro are better hardware value
compared
to equivalent PCs, than the Macbook Pro's are, but maybe my analysis of this is
wrong.

I switched to Mac 3 years ago. I have enjoyed the switch, and the flexibility
of being able
to run Windows XP and Vista on the machine as well as OS X. Hardware wise, I
liek Apples
style, the fact there are no fans/vents on the bottom of the laptop, and how
quiet it is
under low CPU load. I am a bit skeptical about the longeivity of their hardware
though,
never had a problem myself but anecdotal net reports suggest a lot of people
have
problems after too few years have passed since purchase.

Windows is probably more likely to fail need reinstalling than OS X is. PC
video editing
apps used to be riddled with issues but as they have matured over the years
this is
probably not much of an issue anymore.

Apple have certainly made more cockups with software updates, and more stupid
bugs in
video software components (eg quicktime), than I was expecting based on what Id
heard
before I became a mac user. But Ive personally been lucky and never had many
problems.

If people already know like a certain application on Windows or Mac, I
usually
recommend they stick with their current platform, as time is money.

Hi Leesa and thank you. I did send an email to the paypal account
associated with the material.

Someone here asked if they had updated the material or added Alexa
rankings and I went back and see that they did not update the sites
that I can tell, but they did add the Alexa ratings. I'm sure that
took time to do.

I got some of the sites from Joe Whyte at Hybrid SEM, and I credited
him and sent him the new list so that he could benefit as well. I'm
all for sharing. I just don't think I should have been charged $10 for
the list. lol

Joe said he would categorize the list. I sent him an email asking
where he is with that. Hopefully he'll have it done relatively soon.

Well that court case looks old, and it was dismissed last November.
Although it may have been on a technicality and there is a new case

But as they just announced $30 million in funding we can be pretty
sure they arent going belly-up anytime soon, and that people have been
prepared to risk that much money on Veoh despite whatever legal risks
there are going forwards.

So who knows, it could be an unpleasant mess behind the scenes, your

[videoblogging] Sharing some good news

2008-06-09 Thread Sheila English
It's been a great week for my company and I wanted to share the good news!

We were in The Wall Street Journal on Saturday and that has resulted
in some great contacts! We also just found out that one of our
original shows is under consideration for Transit TV (11 million views
a week)while a different one is being considered by Lifetime TV
online. Of course being under consideration doesn't always pan out,
but it was really nice to hear people be enthusiastic about our shows!

I'm finding more and more people interested in original shows, but I
wonder if the actor's strike will create changes that harm online
episodic content distribution? I don't expect to have to hire SAG
actors to be in my shows, but adding new rules often results in mass
confusion during the learning curve and that always gives me a headache.

Thanks for letting me share! Have a great week!

[videoblogging] Canon HV-20 24p-60i issue

2008-06-09 Thread eric gunnar rochow
hey everyone,

i recently bought a Canon HV-20 to complement my larger camera, the
Canon XHA1.

i usually shoot in 24P mode with the XHA1.

i was under the impression that the HV-20 could shoot in 24P, but i
now learn that it shoots in a 'sort-of 24P' mode that is then
'wrapped' in a 60i format.

when you import the footage into FInal Cut, it is a 60i file.

i shoot in progressive ( P format ) specifically for the web, and now
it looks like i will have to de-interlace this HV-20 footage before
uploading to Blip, etc.

Does anyone have any experience with this or suggestions?

i just learned that Canon's new camera , the HV-30 shoots in true
30P, so i may be selling this one and getting the new model , as i
really want the progressive format.

thx, eric. www.gree-house.tv

Great point about the investing. I'm sure people wouldn't invest that
kind of money without a very thorough look at Veoh and everything
going on with the company.

It does feel to me that Veoh is struggling, but from growth or trouble
I couldn't say. I hope some of that $30 million goes toward customer
service!

...it is interesting to see whether customer support
holds up now that the honeymoon hype period for online video has
passed.

Brilliantly said! The race to win the best content and biggest
advertisers seems to be leveling off a bit and people are looking more
at pointed issues such as monetization and target marketing. That's my
own take though. Priorities seem to be shifting with video content
sites. I hope there's thoughtfulness invested in those priorities
outside of where to get the biggest bang for the buck. I know that's
important, but there are other things equally as important.

Cheers!

I suppose customer service may also take a nosedive even if the
company isnt dying, but just decides to refocus, and clients that they
previously coveted are no longer of interest.

Again I am not suggesting this is the case with Veoh.

But I was disgusted to hear they are blocking access to their videos
in many countries now:

So they are willing to throw away up to 10% of their audience. Shame

This laptop had the infamous missing memory slot that affected tens

the cool thin ness violates the Law of Physics (Thermodynamics):
the heat kills the logicboard..which creates the missing memory

The thin Powerbooks look cool, but have major cooling issues. (it
gets INCREDIBLY hot on your lab, it's a widely known issue). It's
what leads to the failure rates. Heat is the Enemy.

I goto the desert offroad races (hot!), this Powerbook has died

fine, because it's FAT has a F***G fan!! Law of
Thermodynamics..must dissipate the heat!

Desktop Mac at work - Get AppleCare
Desktop Mac at home - Skip AppleCare if you want...

I have a quad G5 that's sitting 4 ft away (I'm using a G4/667 desktop
that's circa 2001..7yrs old!!). On a hot day in 2006, it went
kaput..heat issues. It took 3 visits to Applecare to fix it (fancy
watercooled system). I was 4 days late in buying Applecare, so I
don't have coverage. Frankly, I'm scared the quad G5 will blowup I
will have an expensive paper weight. I use it ocassionally (to
render videos), but it's definitely not my main machine.

A bunch of other people have had problems with the quad G5, it's a

I agree.

I have had issues with Apple hardware going back to '95. There was
this Applevision 1710AV monitor, which was a total POS. It was
widely known to be a defective product. When I called in, the Apple
guy refused to acknowledge the problem (lie) wouldn't do anything
about it. I have never bought an Apple monitor since.

Apple has always had an elitist attitute (with price to match)

The Apple AV cable for the iPod, a pricey $20..the connector cracked
broke. (Apple found a cheap supplier, uses its brand name to
jack up the price). I got a 3rd party one for $20 (at the local
supermarket), works fine. Apple has a lot of hype/marketing behind
it. I asked an Apple sales guy about the iPod, why it's so
successful. His response was Marketing.

People don't buy Good Products, they buy GOOD MARKETING
-- business saying

Apple vs PC, it's a matter of lesser of 2 evils.

I have a Hewlett Packard PC laptop running Windows XP, NEVER had a
problem with it. However, it's incredibly clunky vs Mac OS in
terms of intuitive useability. Existing PC users use it because they
are used to it.

I'm finding more and more people interested in original shows, but I
wonder if the actor's strike will create changes that harm online
episodic content distribution? I don't expect to have to hire SAG

But as they just announced $30 million in funding we can be pretty

So who knows, it could be an unpleasant mess behind the scenes, your

Apple has some info on the HV-20/Final Cut workflow to get 1080p24 footage
into the editor. Short version is you have to import it as 60i and then
reverse telecine each clip with either Cinema Tools or Compressor.

2008-06-09 Thread Bill Cammack
Kary has the basics down.

I use a Canon HV20 and shoot in 24P. It's not actually 24
progressive frames per second. It records 24 progressive frames
across 60 interlaced frames.

What this means is you have to do a double process. The first one is
to import the video as HDV into Final Cut. Once you do that, you use
reveal in finder to find the clips in your capture scratch bin, then
you import those files into Compressor. There are some settings you
have to make... something like setting deinterlacing to reverse
telecine and setting the fps to 23.978 and probably some other stuff,
but that's outlined in the Apple docs. You only have to do it once,
and then you use that preset for every clip you import.

As you can tell, time-wise, that's a drag. Another thing you can do,
assuming you're not delivering in 1080 is set up your Compressor
preset to translate the footage to 1280x720. Oh, that's another
thing. Translate the HDV footage into Apple ProRes.

Anyway, once all that's done, the video's great. :) Once you set it
up in Compressor, the process takes a long time, but your final
result's fantastic for $700.

Re: [videoblogging] Re: Canon HV-20 24p-60i issue

2008-06-09 Thread Brook Hinton
It is 24p. Real 24p. It is just 24p with 3:2 pulldown added. It is no
different in that sense from film footage you've had telecine'd or 24p (as
opposed to PA) DVX100 footage. And unlike the XH-A1 and its ilk, it is true
24P rather than the pixel shift res-compromised fakery (effective as it is)
of 24F.
It is not a big deal once you are used to it, and forces your hand to move
your footage out of the gawdawful HDV format in the process. Apple has a doc
on their site that deals specifically with the camera and their process,
which is basically just removing the pulldown in compressor while converting
to prores (or another non-temporally-compressed codec of your choice). You
can also use the free downloadable JES deinterlacer program to do it. Or for
that matter After Effects.

Occasionally - and i mean it is REALLY rare - JES or compressor will
misinterpret the cadence. SO you redo a couple of clips. Oh well. Remember
waiting for film to be ready at the lab? This is really no big deal, just
not as seamless as it is with a DVX or HVX or, I assume, the XH-A1. To get
this (and the rest of what it does) out of a $700 camera is a miracle.

Here is my process, which I use constantly:

1. Capture using capture now at 29.97. 20 minutes or a whole tape. Why
capture now (which I normally tell students to NEVER use)? Because FCP
automatically separates each clip on capture due to the HV20's manner of
dealing with timecode in 24p mode.

2. Load'em up in compressor or JES, or highlight them in the browser and do
it from FCP.

3. Export to prores, aic, photojpeg @ 75% quality or higher, or DVCproHD in
compressor. Set frame controls in the preset to do a reverse telecine before
you do it. If you're going to do this a lot, make a preset, or better yet a
droplet. I use prores HQ at 1440x1080. (there is no quality advantage at
this stage to using 1920 - some would argue there is no quality advantage to
HQ coming from HDV, but if really stretch things around in post processing
like I do you definitely will see a difference in the end).

I capture, reverse telecine, and edit 24p footage from the HV20 almost every
day.

Now if they can just move the manual focus controls and add one more control
so I can control aperture and shutter simultaneously without tricking the
camera interface I'll start to feel actually warm and fuzzy about the thing.
Still, it's a miracle for the money.

Finally, we will read all of your promotional requests, but will
likely not be able to respond to each person directly.

Lastly, please be patient with us as we work through this
  transition period.
  Thanks,
