Re: [videoblogging] B H Disappointment
My question to the group: Any suggestions for a reliable dealer in the New York area with prices in the same range as B H? Or Boston? I've been dealing up until now exclusively with B H so I have no experience with alternates. Ive never heard of another place like BH. Best prices around, best return policy. Those big cameras are mounted on tripods aimed at a tiny model townso you can go from each camera to see the quality. You cant pick them up, but you can fool with all the buttons. I hear your frustration though. Ive been given the advice to rent the camera for a weekend to really put it through the paces if I want a robust experince. No surprise here really. This research concludes that it's worth it for Google to pay the enormous Youtube cost's of serving free video since it brings so much traffic to the web. It's lile grocery stores losing money on eggs to get you into the store. It's a loss leader. http://www.telco2.net/blog/2009/06/google_the_internet_behemoth_a.html Jay -- http://ryanishungry.com http://jaydedman.com http://twitter.com/jaydedman 917 371 6790

I just saw that both Seesmic and Imeem have decided to stop accepting/hosting videos for people. http://blog.imeem.com/2009/06/25/simplifying-imeem/ http://newteevee.com/2009/06/26/seesmic-no-business-in-video-conversations/ It's interesting that Seesmic is closing down video since that was their big play when starting. I know that the vidder community had collectively chosen Imeem to host all their videosand now find out they have 5 days to get take their work down before deletion. [videoblogging] Video Bay: an experiment in HTML5
Check out http://thevideobay.org/. The Pirate Bay dudes have created an experiment in using the video tag in HTML5. You must download one of the newer browser versions (Firefox/Chrome/Safari/Opera). Just follow the instructions and check out the links. Then just View Source and you can start understanding how the video is displayed right in the html. It may be simple stuff now, but so many opportunities are open now. Jay -- http://ryanishungry.com http://jaydedman.com http://twitter.com/jaydedman 917 371 6790

I would suggest going to a rental shop in your area or nyc. They are more then welcoming to let you look at the equipment, then just purchase it at BH. What do you think would have happened to youtube if it wasnt aquired by a mega-company? Sure, it would have raised multiple rounds of investment to stay alive and figure out how to monetize. They would have had to launch their own ad platform, probably similar as google's auction based AdWords. And hope for the best. And struggle. It's interesting though. And the evolution is clearly focused around the so-called premium content... Where Hulu has established itself and where Youtube is moving towards as fast as they can. That's where companies want to display their ads. With the exception of the phenomena of culturally viral media. Yet, in contrast, Blip.tv is surviving and they focus on independent shows. Mostly because of new investments as they continue to work their business models. But they are the torso (and longtail). They are banking on success of the thousands of shows that they host and support. They support them because that supports themselves (ads and syndication deals). Sort of like a Talent Agent. Great to have Blip.tv fighting the good fight. Seeing how so many companies are now getting out of the online video business or are struggling to survive without more blind investments... we'll see if Blip continues to succeed. And if a shows success will influence it to move off of blip.tvand self-serve instead... The business of success. @sull On Mon, Jun 29, 2009 at 8:35 AM, Jay dedman jay.ded...@gmail.com wrote: No surprise here really. [videoblogging] Re: B H Disappointment
I made a promise to myself that I will never buy anything from BH no matter how desperate I am to get something or whether other stores don't carry what I want to get. BH simply became arrogant in their customer service as they achieved power. Let me explain; I have a Strida folding bike and one day I went to BH to purchase a Panasonic TM300. I folded the bike, which by the way folds into a stroller-like shape, and was entering BH, the Welcome to BH, Mexican guy said you can't come in with a bike. I said I was here yesterday with this bike folded and you guys simply put it in the customer bag check-in (I was testing this camcorder then and now I was ready for the purchase). He said no more, chain it outside. I said I have no chain. He called a security guy that one denied the entry too, I asked to talk to the manager and another security guy, not a manager, came out and denied the entry. I simply turned away and rode off. BH lost a customer and ever since I've been telling everyone that this store is no longer what it used to be. I was a loyal customer there since 1995. If you are in NYC, make no mistake, go to a camera rental and play with what you want to buy there, or rent it for a day, and then simply go online and make a purchase anywhere else but BH that has 5-star rating on pricegrabber.com. Good luck! --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Stan Hirson, Sarah Jones shir...@... wrote: I've been doing business with B H for over 20 years. A lot of business. I also explained that I live 2 hours away and would like to make an appointment to come down and look at one. The salesman told me that I did not have to make an appointment, I could always come and look at a demonstrator. It is on a tripod. I asked if I could hold it and see how it balances, etc., because all my shooting is hand-held. He said no, it would have to stay on the tripod. No appointment or other arrangement could be made. I asked what he thought I should do and he made the suggestion that I should go to a rental house and rent one for a weekend. Now this is a $5,000 plus purchase and I feel that I should have the opportunity to hold one in my hands and look through the finder before I buy it. Right now, this is a deal-breaker. This year will be the most informative in terms who's truly innovative in online video hosting. I had a hunch that seesmic or imeem would not be around for long simply by initially checking out their UI and user experience. Not that I am happy that they are folding, but this is another example that the mee-too model doesn't work unless you bring something groundbreaking. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Jay dedman jay.ded...@... wrote: I just saw that both Seesmic and Imeem have decided to stop accepting/hosting videos for people. http://blog.imeem.com/2009/06/25/simplifying-imeem/ http://newteevee.com/2009/06/26/seesmic-no-business-in-video-conversations/ It's interesting that Seesmic is closing down video since that was their big play when starting. [videoblogging] Re: B H Disappointment
I´ve never been to NY, but my first visit will probably include a trip to BH - everyone talks about that store. I understand your frustration, and you are right - its no small amount of money and you´re going to be stuck with that camera for a bit of time. But... if it makes you feel better (maybe it won´t) we have no similar or even remotely close option to a store like BH in my country (Portugal). And I´m not sure theres anything like it in Europe, except maybe London. Also, I understand the need for the store to keep expensive gear under control. The rental ideas sound good, you can make a real live street test for a day. Not many rental facilities here either ;)... but hey, we´ve got sun and good food! Miguel. [videoblogging] iMovie 08/09 VS iMovie HD 06?
http://tastyblogsnack.com/2009/01/29/imovie-09-editing-tip/ I think it’s weird that there’s nothing between iMovie 06 and Final Cut Pro. iMovie 08 and 09 is way to basic, and doesn’t have a good enough precision. I loved iMovie 06. Easy to use and fast. iMovie 08 and 09 works better with family movies. At least that’s my opinion. I've been using iMovie HD 06 (6.0.3) since 2006 with Sony FX1 (HDV, analog tape), it's great. I heard some complaints on this group about later versions of iMovie being dumbed down. And since iMovie 08 seems to be devoid of any of the good movie and audio editing features that 06 had, I’m wondering what other folks are using now if they want to have a good set of editing tools without going to professional software. I need geotagging for my photos, which will then be bulk uploaded to Flickr, with Flickr uploader. iPhoto 09 is getting good review for geotagging, so I'm considering upgrading to iLife '09. Anybody have a violent reaction to iMovie 07, 08, or 09? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090404003545AAOYVCP Sorry but iMovie HD is no longer available as a download. Apple removed it with the introduction of iLife and iMovie 09. The links that Apple still has on its download site are only upgrades to the original version 6 which you must have on your computer before it will work. Now the only way that you might still be able to get iMovie HD is to find someone that has an older mac and still has the iLife 06 installation disc. Or I have seen iLife 06 discs for sale on eBay. Why don't you upgrade to iLife 09 and the new iMovie 09. It has all the special effects back again. Regards, Zyfert So, I can upgrade to iLife 09, install iMovie HD '06 from my discs? Yes, according to: http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=28t=5089 Anybody else doing this: dual copies of iMovie HD 06 iMovie 09? Yahoo!
